"Until early this week, there were only two laboratories in Africa - one in Senegal and the other in South Africa - which had the reagents needed to test samples. They have been working as referral laboratories for countries around the region."

The case in Nigeria is a Italian person.

This virus is incredibly contagious, though not as lethal as some are suggesting. Some South Korean numbers at putting the R-0 at 12! This means there can be no containment. It can only be held up progressing geographically.

This will become pandemic very soon, and in a few years endemic as most of the globe is infected in yearly waves. Cross immunity will build up and eventually it will become just another bad flu. But it cannot be stopped. With maybe 5-8 months for a vaccine this years bout is a done deal. Good news from above. 0% CFR for people without underlying medical conditions. So kids are the least worry category as they are lowest risk.

Forget all the closing borders lark. That horse bolted in early January. If you have an underlying condition take measure to reduce your risk if you can. Everyone else good luck with it when you get it now or over the next few years. The government cant help, just hope the care system can handle it.

The Independent are reporting that the patient is being treated in the Mater hospital. Aka the center of the city, pretty much the most overcrowded, dense hotspot in the entire country.

Can anyone tell me how is this not literally the very last place, like the absolute last possible place, youd want to put a patient with such a disease? Am I missing something here, or is this one of the dumbest decisions you could possibly ever imagine?

What does it matter where the hospital is as long as they're in isolation.

Would you prefer them sent to a remote hospital that may not have sufficient equipment and staff?

The worst place would be a retirement home or a HIV councilling group meeting.

In terms of dumb decisions there are many worse, such as invading the bay of pigs or sadams decision to not relent to Western political pressure.

Because they are a hospital and will have measures in place to prevent transmitting to others.

The criteria for the hospital to send them to is going to be based on facilities to treat the person not how far from a city it is.

There has yet to be a reported case of a child under the age of 10 being infected.

There have been children under 10 infected but the outcomes have all been positive.

No if say he was brought there by ambulance/parent. Brought straight into an isolation unit. Didn't have contact with anybody until he got there.

We have alot of people on here and social media making brash statements. People demanding the country be put on lockdown yet would be moaning if closing the country down meant they don't get their 5 euro a week rise in the social next budget. It's absolutely ridiculous. By all means the government and HSE should take all precautions necessary but closing down the whole country is ridiculous

With all the talk/news seemingly focused on current overall stats, has anyone found any of the following info?

Is there anyone close to working out a cure? Wasn't there some sort of breakthrough in Australia in the early stages of the whole thing? Something like recreating the virus or something similar? What then? What are they doing now? Anyone else working on it?

Also, if you do have the virus, how long does it usually last? How long approximately is it contagious for?

A cure is unlikely. In a similar fashion to how there is no cure for the flu. A vaccine may happen eventually but will take a while to get through trials etc.

Do you mean after you cop you have the virus or after you are contagious as you may infect others before you show symptoms.

The USA now appears to be in the same position now where China was in the middle of January.

The composition of Trump’s team to battle the virus...

What could possibly go wrong ?

    !

The CDC is the best disease control center in the world, also the amount of federal money available is vast. The White House team are only there to react to requests from the medical experts. Stop using this crisis to attack their christen faith. It has absolutely nothing to do with it.

The poster asked if the mater hospital was the worst place to have a patient with coronavirus. I was pointing out that keeping a patient with a group of immunocompromised HIV infected people is probably a worse idea.

Are there any discussions to cancel St. Patrick celebrations this year? Or are we just going to go ahead with it and hope for the best and probably end up with a lot more cases the weeks after

The US made an offer of assistance to Iran this morning.

    Iran rejected it.

Seems like they need all the help they can get.
Surely the burkas will protect the women? Head to toe facemasks.

Lol. Showing your own ignorance there in an attempt to get a few laughs. Iranian women generally don't wear burqas

Because it's not as scary when you say that about half of those diagnosed are now recovered, gets less clicks, sells less newz.

    This is very bad news
India said on Monday two people in the country had tested positive for coronavirus. According to Reuters:

One case was detected in the capital New Delhi, while the other was in the southern state of Telangana, the government said in a statement.

The patients had a travel history from Italy and the United Arab Emirates, respectively, the statement said. Both patients were stable and being closely monitored.

It is but I imagine the number of people who travel from Africa to go skiiing in Northern Italy is pretty small compared to the rest of Europe.

Likewise not a lot of traffic between Lagos and China, compared to London.
