I would doubt that only 1 person on that school trip will have caught it. How many people was he in close contact with on the coach, plane etc?

    It wasn't a school trip.

And that's the problem - the media and people on social media jump to conclusions and within minutes bullsh1t made up rubbish is suddenly "fact"

The hardshaw "you're being hysterical" brigade are out in force this morning, some going as far to say that it's grand to go around coughing and spluttering on public transport.

Amazing the ability that denial can play in people's reaction to a real threat, not much different to Donald 'no American will die from the Coronavirus' Trump.

Which posts and which posters? While a common tactic, nonsense posts attacking a strawman contribute nothing to a good internet argument.

This is one school of thought, another is that the heat will take care of the virus. I think only Algeria is affected so far.

EDIT: Nigeria has been added to the list.

He never said that , he said none have died yet. He also never said Coronavirus itself was a hoax but the Dem insinuation of a lack of readiness was.

The HSE guy on Newstalk this morning said that the students from the school in Dublin can mingle with their family. Only segregate them if they start coughing and sneezing. Somewhat too late than for the family.

    facepalm-deja-q.jpg

Does this mean the rest of the family aren't in isolation?

Let's take the UK stance from January on this. A relative of mine returned from new years in China around the end of January/start of February and self isolated. The entire household self isolated and the health services called out several times over the course of the 14 days to take samples for testing.

As far as I can see the UK hasn't had a major outbreak because they're taking stringent measures when a case shows up.

Just got Email from Son's Secondary School asking Parents to notify them if any of the students have been in a list of specified areas (incl Northern Italy) in the last 3 weeks.

    Nothing from daughter's Primary School.

I'd be reluctant to advise someone to travel to a region which already has cases. Which Costa Del Sol does. If it was me, I wouldn't go.

The tweet is a classical example of a misinterpretation of statistics throughout the media. The Chinese stats indicate that 10.5% of fatalities had underlying cardiovascular conditions. They don’t indicate that the disease kills 10.5% of people with cardiovascular conditions.

Ah now Trump talking rubbish is a low bar lol.

I think it makes sense to be extra vigilant about handwashing/using anti bac gel, using tissues etc.

I am not wearing a mask, but I wouldn't take the piss out of someone who is like other people on here.

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe The British/Iranian citizen who was jailed over there in 2016 because Iran says she was attempting to topple the government has told her family she has symptoms.

She’s been unwell before and was denied medical treatment.

Yes, that poor woman, years in prison has already compromised her health. If she dies, it will be a terrible outcome for her family, who have fought so hard to get a resolution to her situation. And of course, that fool Boris Johnson, did her no favours, implying that she was over there teaching journalism.

There has been 7 cases recorded in Africa already.

The WHO stated last week they were puzzled as to why it hasn't spread rapidly in Africa.

The US made an offer of assistance to Iran this morning.

    Iran rejected it.

Seems like they need all the help they can get.

Surely the burkas will protect the women? Head to toe facemasks.

I would be interested in how much testing those countries have done

With all the talk/news seemingly focused on current overall stats, has anyone found any of the following info?

Is there anyone close to working out a cure? Wasn't there some sort of breakthrough in Australia in the early stages of the whole thing? Something like recreating the virus or something similar? What then? What are they doing now? Anyone else working on it?

Also, if you do have the virus, how long does it usually last? How long approximately is it contagious for?

the whole containment strategies in whole europe are a joke and nothing else. wash your hands, can't hear it anymore.

In Germany, the city Heinsberg, where the first case is from, who still seems to be in a serious condition, was quarantined for a few days. It's all open and flowing again there. Ever heard of an incubation period of 14-28 days?

It's winter, people get colds and flu and they sneeze everywhere, life goes on.

No! Whereas the Flu can cause a runny nose in a woman(a cold) - it can be life threatening in a man.

Just to clarify , I said “if” , I wasn’t implying that there is some conspiracy. But you can’t have many more official cases of it disclosed here if testing is slow. Since the HSE has decided (for some reason) to not disclose the amount of people they are testing daily we don’t know how many have been tested.
I was going to highlight your “if” like this If, but didn't think you'd take too kindly to it. :)

The global estimate is that for every newly reported case, there are 2-3 unreported.

I don't see the benefit of the HSE disclosing testing numbers. In order for people to be tested, they have to present themselves. It's not like there is a mandatory testing policy for everybody that has been to a reported area of infection in the past month.

I think a company said they were hoping to start human trials in March.

China also has 80 pending trials seemingly

    Yes that is very true
But surely thats the same with seasonal flu?
Someone like yourself is in danger from that too
I have the greatest sympathy for anyone like yourself

You'd have to be circumspect all the same about a poster whose first post on boards was only 6 days ago.
And he seemed a bit accident prone between slicing his finger open on the plane with blood gushing everywhere and getting that bad cut on his leg on the beach and the sandflies and the chinese tourists from the cruise ship ...
