    Keep it real-

Consider that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes from October 2019 through February 22, 2020 there have been 35 million cases of seasonal influenza, with 300,000 hospitalizations, and approximately 30,000 deaths. According to WHO, through the end of February, 2020, there have been over 85,000 cases of COVID-19 with 2900 resultant deaths. While these estimates are likely to be low, they still pale in comparison to the illness and death caused by the "routine" seasonal influenza. And yet the fear associated with COVID-19 has the potential to acutely cripple life as we know it through its effects on work, healthcare, school, travel, and supply chains.

You can't always easily get to soap and water, that's the point. My friend would have a job where she often has to shake hands with people and also uses public transport to get around London. It's not always possible or practical to immediately go and wash your hands with soap right after you've got off a bus and extremely easy to accidentally touch your face or nose without thinking. This is why hand gel has been recommended - it's a lot better than nothing.

I do agree with most your sentiment, btw, but wanting to make sure you have enough hand gel, tissues and the like isn't OTT.
    1) tell people you meet you're avoiding hand shakes/hugs. The current situation will have the vast majority understand. 2) No hand gel? A stopgap would be to look for some rubbing alcohol in a pharmacy, maybe mix it in with antibacterial gel soap as a base and use that. IIRC tea tree essential oil has anti pathogen qualities and most won't be thinking of that(high alcohol content too). Even a small squirt of the gel soap alone rubbed on and left to dry would likely trap if not reduce the viral load on the hands. Think sideways as it were. The not touching one's face is down to practice and willpower, but I can see your point there.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

Sorry, that was stupid of me, I didn't think of the actual meaning of it. It's edited now.
    Yeah yeah.

    Whatever.

When a poster actually shows a bit of humility, you want to throw it back in their face - nice one yourself.

Because they’re lying. The student was at school last week and in contact with x number of people who went home each day and were in contact with x number of people who work in factories and hospitals and restaurants and bars and hotels and shops and public transport etc etc etc and none of those people will have been notified. This is what causes the panic among people.

It’s the same with the passenger who travelled to Belfast from Dublin earlier in the week. The HSE lied when they said they had contacted everyone who had close contact with that person which is impossible as that person travelled by train to Belfast and they have no way of tracing train passengers as their names are not recorded. The train passes through drogheda and Dundalk which are two large commenter towns. People buy weekly/monthly/return tickets and simply get on the train. There is no way of tracing them. The lies the HSE are spilling is unbelievable. Their bare faced lies are leading people to believe other information is being kept from them.

    Stop talking sense

And obviously this is where your in depth knowledge of our virus action plan has come from, we should all be grateful to have you here.

I don't really understand your hostility. I work at directorate level. I am a pharmacist. Surely, you would expect me to be involved in strategy planning. I don't need validation. The HSE paycheck is all the validation I need ;)

    You point that finger!

Yeah I totally am. This is a shambles, and totally preventable.

Not quite as preventable as China curbing CTM sale of Pangolin scales, and live wild animals in wet markets, but hopefully they have learned their lesson on that one.

many of us were speculating about a bus for the other person when they actually got a taxi, why didn't they say that as soon as they found the taxi man.

Contact tracing and isolation is not a sliver bullet and no one has suggested it is.

It’s called a containment phase for a reason; the intent is not to 100pc prevent spread; it is to control and contain it

Cork GP commenting on the outbreak.
“It is absolutely blown out of proportion. Less people will die in Ireland of the Coronavirus in the next three months than died in traffic accidents over the weekend. There were seven deaths on the roads over the weekend. If we have seven deaths from the Coronavirus, I will be amazed,” he told The Echo.

Tell the government to let the rugby match go ahead and send the lad back to school in dublin then.

Comparing a new virus still breaking out to the full season of a known virus for which we have vaccines is particularly pointless.

As far as I remember, Swine Flu was a particular risk in relation to pregnancy, but covid-19 is more for people with underlying conditions like diabetes, asthma, heart disease, or cancer.

The great fake Swine epidemic of 2009. :)

Why weren't the schools closed and the families isolated after the return form Italy. Now all their contacts other pupils parents and their parents colleagues are exposed. Could have been avoided.

Stop Italian flights too before it's too late.

How long has this kid been back in the country?

Mid term break for a lot of secondary schools was the week before last. He's probably back since last weekend, ready for school on Monday.

    I'm puzzled Wibbs.

You do or do not want people to buy (effective) face masks? Because on one hand you are worried about face masks running out, but on the other hand you agree that the right type of face masks might be effective.

Any face mask, that’s not some sort of old “gas mask”, is only effective in not spreading the virus, if you have it. It won’t stop you from getting it.

The worst part is so much of this “moronic plague” could be contained if people just followed the simple instructions of washing hands, with soap, using sterilise and “self-isolating” if symptoms show.

Instead you’re just seeing “twitter feeds” blaming immigrants and “de gubbermint” and going on about “wot dere not tellin uz”.

Just wash your bloody hands and stop shuffling up to A&E when you’ve got a cold or flu.
