What are other people doing to prepare themselves when the country goes into lock down?

Will we still have electricity or should I go out now and buy and buy gas cooking rings and a ton of gas? Really want to get a load of meat and freeze it but not sure if electricity will be turned off?

I have 72 cans of tinned food, loads of pasta and sauces and bottled water and hand sanitizer, cleaning products, face masks and goggles.

Really not looking forward to this.

    0.1 death rate for flu.

    2% death rate for Coronavirus.

That is 20 times more simple maths.

Edit so they say but we don't have the full picture yet.

More HYPE.... We don’t know how many people are infected and are asymptomatic and at this stage have harboured this virus and if not developed symptoms have actually already recovered. It appears this virus has been in the US now for in excess of a month at least.

2% is a figure plucked out of the sky; I’d estimate the level of infection world wide is many multiples of what is being recorded against the death rate of 2%.

Do the HSE think we are living in the 1980's? They've heard of texting, social media etc..

    Absolutely bizarre attitude

Eh? Surely gloves will pick up germs/viruses from surfaces the same as bare hands?

Sorry, that was a complete brain shutdown moment- more conscious I meant! Maybe I should take my temperature now... :pac:

It actually looks rather likely to be in the 2% range. 1% of affected passengers on the ship have already died, with dozens of others sitll in serious or critical condition and hundreds of others still going throgh the stages of illness. Yes they are older age on average so it would be revised down but WHO believe there arent a large number of mild cases going undetected worldwide.

Agree with this, but treatment should improve/vaccines and scientists should learn more about the condition. I would worry about Africa however

Ebola is too deadly to spread. There have been about 2,400 cases of it since it first emerged in the 70's. There have been 2,300 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours.

We can hope. 2% is a big deal, and it is the overall consistent number at the moment. Remember that most people infected haven't yet had an opportunity to die, so it is hard to work out how many cases will end up either dead or cured.

AIDS had something like a 95% fatality rate, but is one of the easiest viruses to contain.

    I love the wording here.:D

Do you believe in opportunity for all?

I'll sleep sounder knowing a clerical worker is looking out for me though.

I actually find it quite sad that you consider anybody doing a clerical job in the HSE worth sneering. We all have our roles and if the clerical staff all magically disappeared. The HSE would grind to a halt. I don't work in administration but maybe have a look at what you contribute to the nation vs what they do.

True the number of people who pass away might increase, but it also looks like there is a significant under reporting of cases which means the overall mortality rate is possibly a fair bit lower than 2%. Too early to tell.

Although it's six of one, half a dozen of the other really as if there is a significant under reporting then it means transmission rates are much higher and the number of fatalities will be higher too as a result.

The whole country knows at this stage, dog in the street knows. It's all over boards, reddit, WhatsApp, etc. It's just stupid to keep it 'secret'

They knew rightly that the details would get out very quickly but they are bound to preserve the privacy of patients. So, don't name names and let social media do the leaking.

He is a doctor tho- you might but agree with his politics, etc but that doesn’t nullify his qualifications.

I'm not really seeing the purpose of the SURE IT'S GRAND attitude.

What's the worst that can happen from people panicking? The stock market loses some percentage? What's the worst that can happen from a lackadaisical response? Dead people.

Yes I noticed all the Lidl own-label porridge was gone in Greystones on Thursday. Likewise all their pasta.
A man in front of me bought about 30 boxes of their value tissues (the ones in a box), lots of loo roll, kitchen roll - and 4 cans of beer.
The half-price toilet paper was sold out around 10.30 - usually a special offer like that would still be available in the afternoon.
UHT milk was all gone in Greystones on Thursday, but still available in Bray today - they don't stock an awful lot of it, so I guess there may be one or two Greystones customers who are stocking up. I buy it regularly.

There’s definitely “stocking up” going on- never saw my local supermarket so busy so early in the day- trollies stocked high with dry goods.

Or we are still in the middle of it and have only supposition on the confirmed cases.
AIDS had something like a 95% fatality rate, but is one of the easiest viruses to contain.
Eh... because HIV is also one of the hardest to catch and one of the easiest to protect against. If one were looking for a chalk and cheese example in virology Covid and HIV would be up there.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

If it turns out to be 2% when this all blows over. It's near guaranteed to be a lower percentage.

MERS(and SARS) were easier to contain because they were less transmissible, had a shorter and consistent incubation period, no asymptomatic carriers and only became infectious when symptoms occurred. If this Covid had the same mortality rate as MERS(70% of sufferers required intubation) then we would have a societal shift not seen since the Black Death.

Absolutely. The numbers don’t stack up if the contagion rate is so high. We could have a death rate as closer to flu in the end. ( I’m guessing)

    Cervical check?

You don't think one of the criteria for being a top class health service is treating the people that need to be treated?
The treatment the people actually receive is only one half of the equation.
Cervical check was the government's fault not the HSE.

Mary Harney and her like chose to outsource the service to the US instead of supporting HSE laboratory services.
