Ireland just beat Australia 26-21 in their opening match at Cape Town!

TK in the 16th minute after Australia drew level just before the hooter.

Following online unfortunately but what a start! Hopefully a win against Samoa or Kenya tomorrow will get us into the Cup draw

Caught the game. Brilliant from the lads. Hard up in the tackles saved them. Really impressive showing. Some brain dead moments in attack but overall it was excellent.

Dardis got the most ridiculous yellow for a late tackle. He committed and the fella kicked it and the ref binned him.

Aussies didn't give Conroy a millimetre of space. Ireland unquestionably the better side

Beat Samoa this morning 28-14, qualified for the quarters and we play Kenya in about two hours to decide who tops the group.

Was McNulty an AIL winger? I know he’s playing against Kenya but he doesn’t look athletic at all. Doesn’t look like a natural passer either. At fault for 2 tries so far.

    Some great kicking by Dardis!

Outside centre, or at least he was when he played Munster A.

So we topped the group and are waiting to see who we face on the quarters tomorrow. Looking most likely to be Fiji right now?

What happened the challenge trophy and 5th place playoff?

The 4 winning Cup QF go to Semis then how are the 4 losing Cup QF ranked 5th to 8th?

Only seven behind with 2:30 left

Scrappy game but best way to play fiji

  • Subscribers Posts: 41,038 ✭✭✭✭sydthebeat

    Two late Fiji tries, 31 - 12.

Not a bad performance at all

Women finished 10th and men 6th. Maybe theyve cut games and base some final rankings based on pool stages?

They've reduced the amount of games at double header tournaments

They can definitely take more positives than negatives out of the Fiji game. There was stuff they could have done better but overall Fiji play in a different stratosphere.

It's a different beast playing against Fiji. Your options are either to tackle high and get bumped because they're so powerful. Or tackle low and guarantee that they offload. Because they will.

Realistically the only way to beat Fiji is to take every chance you get because they will take theirs. We squandered maybe 2 clear cut chances.

While Conroy gets the headlines, a huge amount of what Ireland do well centres around Terry Kennedy. Real gem in that team.

Jack Kelly is going to score an absolute belter this year also. His sidestep is unbelievable

Imagine if Jordan Larmour played 7s...

His step and speed from standing is good, not sure he is that quick over 30meters to be able to properly burn the kind of guys on the 7s circuit.

Our tactic for Fiji was better than the last time we played them, we were noticeably having a player stand to the side of a tackle to stop offload, it worked well but they will always create some chances

Still brilliant to be competing with current series and olympic champs. They won 5 if the 10 events last year including 3rd, 1st, 2nd, 1st, 1st in the last 5 to snatch it from the US. Fiji are pure class.

    A good first season
Staying up as a core team, 3+ cup QF and 1 3-4th place

    A very good first season
    Mid table 8th+, 4+ QF with 2x 3-4th place

    A fab first season
A medal at any event, a Fiji/NZ/SA scalp

    Wildest dreams
    Top try scorer
Someone on DHL tracker season team
An event win or runner up
    Olympic QF

Hopefully the women find some form in the next few events and stay up.

Where does Olympic qualification fit into this?

Was more meaning that it isn't on the list. Would have to rank quite highly.

Draw for next mens event in LA has been made
Ireland have South Africa, Canada and Kenya in the pool stage and competition will be played with full compliment of ranking games following pool stage

  • Registered Users Posts: 37,554 ✭✭✭✭eagle eye

Tough draw that. Kenya have been playing well, Canada with Hiriyama are always dangerous and South Africa are top class.

We should be expecting to beat Canada and Kenya.

Both good sides and literally anything can happen on the day but they lads will be targeting those games.

We've got them first up. Some momentum and we might be able to keep South Africa in touching distance in the last pool game to get a head of steam for a tough quarter final.

5th place finish here is doable and surely a realistic goal for the lads

agreed, canada beat us last time out, but were well beaten themselves by spain.

if we can bring the intensity we brought against england, we should be aiming for wins over both canada and kenya

Kenya and Canada have been on the circuit for a while and have some decent athletes, and both have knocked over top 3 teams in the past. Understand the optimism/expectations but I wouldn't underestimate either team or be surprised if they roll Ireland.

Beautiful thing about Sevens is anything can happen.

Our guys are phenomenal athletes themselves and have an unbelievable training centre they're based in. We are very green on the circuit but there is belief on the team.

Bookies wouldn't have us as favourites probably but I wouldn't be at all surprised to beat them

Great start for Ireland beating Canada right at the death. Kennedy with a nice try to win it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,605 ✭✭✭✭Squidgy Black

Lads are through to the quarter finals where they'll play Australia, lost to Kenya 29-12 but then drew with South Africa 19-19 after conceding a try on the last play of the game but qualify as runner up for the pool.
