The Lord Mayor runs St.Annes in the bloody chains. That can't be for any reason other than PR. Are people skeptical of him? Or is it just because Ross is an unpopular figure?

The last few lord mayors have done parkruns during their term. I would wonder how many run the events when the their term is up and return to just being a cllr

To be fair there is little benefit in a mayor 'canvassing' outside their electoral district so the benefit is to meet the peasants rather than electoral gain. I know Nial Ring went to a good few around Dublin.

Mmmm, debatable as he would be one of 4 or so busy scanners, getting to see only 25% of people instead of seeing everyone as a marshal.

If a politician can't do something as innocent and welcome as volunteer at a parkrun to try and get people to like them you'd wonder what people would be glad to see them doing instead.

I'm not going to comment on Shane Ross but when I read the last few posts, my first thought was how people give out about someone who volunteered many times to make an event happen while wondering do they ever remark on how many people never volunteer at all.

I have given up complaining about the people who dont volunteer at this stage i am happy if they volunteer.

That'd be my outlook on it too. You don't get the full parkrun experience until you've volunteered, even better when you get a number of different roles under your belt

If you want to see some people complaining about people not volunteering enough then head over to the parkrun Discussion Group on Facebook. Every Monday morning there will be some variation on the theme, then just as the discussion is getting interesting they will lock the post. :)

But, parkrun don't care how many times people volunteer, or even if people don't volunteer at all. They are not there to try and make people do things they don't want to, just to provide the facilities for people to try something new if they want, be that running or walking a 5km, or volunteering and never covering a 5km... makes no odds to them. They just want people to get out and do "something".

It's great that parkrun provided a method for people to get recognition for volunteering roles, unfortunately in doing that they created a monster that actually ends up putting people down for "not volunteering enough" more than it celebrates.

Criticizing people for not volunteering enough is one thing but having a go at someone who volunteers regularly for "over egging the hand clapping and encouragement " is a bit ridiculous.

Both Pro Direct and parkrun said they can't replace milestone shirts, as expected. It's a mystery where my purple one has gone.

Ah no that must be so disappointing. I think the purple one is the nicest one. Do you know anyone who has qualified for one in the past who didn't avail of the tshirt and who might be able to get their link reactivated and order one for you?

I think they're missing out on a potential revenue stream. Particularly when it comes to the childrens milestone shirt when they've completed 10 full parkruns. I would drop the Free Weekly Timed podcast an email to get their take on it or at least to make it public as I'm sure there are other people in your situation.

    Unfortunately not.

This is how they worded it which I can appreciate.
Unfortunately we are still working on building our stock levels with the new milestone t-shirts. Under the circumstances, it would be inappropriate to offer T-shirts for sale. However, we still hope to be able to offer replacement T-shirts for purchase in future.

Not sure it's something they are ever going to get ontop of with the stock levels of milestone tshirts to be able to offer replacements for sale as the numbers they have to give out for free is only ever going to increase.

Did hear a rumour on FWT a good few weeks back about something potentially changing with milestones, but it was very vague and I've not heard similar from other sources.

I think they should have just branded the Contra range as "parkrun" rather than the confusing setup of a sponsor brand, that presumably isn't paying for the advertising space, that names it's products after parkrun events, that is owned by parkrun (kind of) and give it's profits to parkrun, but is then also portrayed as nothing to do with parkrun and doesn't use their manufacturing for producing parkrun milestone tops or their webshop as the portal to provide the milestone tops through as they do that through a different competitor clothing brand and then used that competitor clothing brand to sell apricot tops for them rather than using their own company that produces running clothing as well. It's all a bit weird.

I've been doing parkrun for 4.5 years and they've never been on top of supply for milestone tshirts.

I wish they could offer more milestones for volunteering. I know people who have 50 or more vols done, one person who has volunteered nearly 100 times. It would be nice to have them marked with something like a beanie hat (or baseball hat in warmer countries).

I don't get the contra brand. I've only ever seen one person wearing it and that was shortly after it launched. The apricot parkrun range was popular and is in demand - they've just relaunched the singlets. I treated myself to an apricot tshirt a few years ago and it gets so much attention. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't tempted with a hoodie....

Seen a bit of the Contra stuff over here, but not massive amounts of it. Other than the spots on some of their items it is a bit non-descript though and so difficult to notice when people are wearing it, I actually think that is a good thing for what they are trying to do in have a brand that more people feel comfortable wearing and not being too fluorescent and shouty about the brand is part of that getting more non-runners int wearing sports gear without feeling self conscious.

But it means they are not really able to push the brand by any means other than to parkrunners through the parkrun emails.

The apricot stuff is great, and despite not being overly keen on shouty colours am more than happy to walk around as an advert for parkrun. But at the moment my 250 top is getting worn most weeks at parkrun... until the transfers fall off it then I might resurect the apricot one. Would like one of the hoodies as well, but the zipper one doesn't say parkrun on it so less keen on it. I want something that obviously says parkrun in shouty orange text on the back of it rather than the small logo.

Can you get milestones off Ebay or second hand? I am sure they must be around somewhere

Not looking good for my chances of getting a parkrun in tomorrow as the local cancellations are coming in thick and fast now. And highly likely that if there are any still running the bridge that I'd need to get across to reach them will be closed, especially after it was closed for a couple of days as they tried to retreive a lorry that got blown over on Tuesday as the winds were calming down.

That is Severn Bridge parkrun turn around point on the right hand side of the bridge:

    Few cancellations...

    https://www.parkrun.ie/cancellations/

I'm sure plenty not mentioned on that page, including Marlay and all the parks in Dun Laoighre/Rathdown.

It had a few earlier. There are some on the intenational parkrun page

    https://www.parkrun.com/cancellations/

A lot of events seem to use their facebook pages to communicate cancellations, so there isnt really a central place you can check.

Short course in Meadowmill today but still a decent turnout. Weather wasn't too bad at all the wind had died down by start time. I'd never done the 3 lap route before so made for a bit of a change. Not surprised so many were called off ours was on the very limit although I lot of that was down to bloody lorries being driven over the grass and tearing it up!

Left it relatively late to leave this morning so we could decide which direction to travel in and leave options if cancellations happened during the drive. The Curly Wurly declared to be on though and as its flat and no trees to be blown over nearby was always going to be a fairly safe bet. Seems that a bit of mud around a flat field was enough to scare off the 1000+ from other nearby cancelled events going there though and only a handful from another event cancelled at 8:30 just down the road diverted.

But I was 8 minutes slower than normal pushing the buggy through the course so can understand others deciding better to stay home instead.

Bit blustery in St Annes but the rain mostly held off. Not the worst weather I have run in there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,041 ✭✭✭corcaigh07

The rain held off in Clonakilty today and had 24 hardy souls do the 4 laps today (which for Clon isn’t too bad). I’ve been out in worse on a parkrun course :)

River Valley was grand. No rain, no more windier than it was the last 2/3 weeks.

I didn't run this morning, I was coming off a 24 hour shift but I was photographer in Father Collins.

Like St.Annes it wasn't too bad at the start but there's a marked difference in the weather between the start and finishers album this morning.

I'd say if you had that wind on your back in St.Annes this morning you'd have had great aul criac :D
