Just test drove a 2016 BMW 330e and 2018 Merc 350e this morning.

The BMW felt more fun to drive. More responsive. Interior is a bit outdated. Old style handbrake too. I would love the new 2020 version but I can't justify spending that much personally.

The Merc definitely has a more premium feel on the inside. The driving didn't really wow me as much. My view could be a bit tainted by the salesman too. He seemed to lose interested in me when I mentioned I was interested in a 2nd hand 2016 (They only had 2018+ in stock). He also only bought me around the estate rather than out onto open road so didn't get as good a drive of it compared to the BMW. Also he seemed a bit clueless on the actual car. I asked him several questions I knew the answer to and he either gave me the wrong answer or didn't know.

I started two weeks ago looking at Audi A4 TFSIs but I think I'm quickly jumping on this hybrid bandwagon. The electric suits my mon-fri driving perfectly too. Charger at work.
The VRT is a massive incentive too. ~€4000 VRT for A4 sline vs ~€700-900 VRT for the 330e or 350e. Big saving in money to be had.
Also these cars have a lot more power.
Just need to make a decision on the 330e vs 350e.
I think I'm currently leaning towards the 330e after today's test drive.

this is always the way though, the bm are a "better drive" many chose merc for the "more comfortable" drive...

will it be possible in future to replace the battery in the 330e, 530e etc with a larger kw one?

Hi folks, decided to sell my 330e as going to go full EV. Been an immense car to own. UK import with full BMW service.

anythings possible but unlikely i'd say.

Any sign of the 330e Touring ever happening? Supposed to be coming in the summer.

Is the car insurance just based on the 2L petrol engine or do they take into account the battery boosts the BHP up to 250?

My insurance went down 10% when moving from a 1.5 110bhp diesel to a 2.0 290bhp petrol car. Engine size and power isn't as relevent as you think.

I’d go with the Merc - if you put it into Sport mode it’s a lovely drive but the cabin and general styling is much more modern. You also have the option of estate with the Merc is the small saloon boot size is a concern

Ya I'm still humming and hawing. I feel like I might be getting more with the Merc (higher spec car, better finish, looks more expensive) but the BMW really grabbed me with the driving experience. I was excited driving it.

With the Merc 350e I can go base spec too and you're already getting a nice car. The BMW 330e I'd need to spec up to luxury or M-sport.

I think I'll need another test drive of the two cars.

I'm in the market for a car upgrade! Seriously considering a 330e such a beautiful car. My only concern would be the battery replacement cost if all went wrong.Would any body have a figure for a 2016 m sport with 60k miles on the clock? Are the cars out long enough to get a true understanding of the battery performance? How is the health check preformed by the main dealer for battery capacity can this be done by the owner? ASAIK on the leaf you could use and app connected to the OBD which would give you an indication of each battery cell if the battery was reaching the 70% capacity limit?

BMW offer a 6year 100,000km warranty on the battery - they will replace if it goes below 70%.

With regards to insurance .. the quote I've gotten on the 330e MSport Plus is about 10% cheaper than I paid on the 150PS 2L Kodiaq TDI last year (two drivers in their 40s with no penalty points / claims, secured driveway)

Can you check yourself if the battery is below 70% or do you need some special equipment?

Would an RAC check catch this or are they not up to date on the testing of electrics?

Would a warranty for a 2016 330e bought in UK be valid here assuming a low mileage of 40k miles currently ?

Look at the Ts &Cs attached to the warranty.

Unless provided directly by BMW, many of these so- called "warranties" are really only limited cost-refunding insurance policies that have many exclusions and get-out clauses, particularly where the subject vehicle incurs a charge against the 'warranty' in another country.

I've been burnt on one of these in the past...:eek::eek:

If it’s a BMW AUC warranty, then yes as it’s a BMW Europe warranty

Have been looking for a 2017 330e and it seems there isn't one yet there yet around 20 k .The prices up north seem to be quite similar to those here .
I see some used 330e's advertised here with "prices quotes inclusive of any applicable VRT". I presume these are UK cars which would have been cheaper and stocked . Would a cartell check then pick up history of these cars ?

I'm looking at 2016s 330e in the UK. I'm seeing
    ~£13k for basic spec
    15.5k-16k for decent spec
    17k-17.5k for very nice spec

Unfortunately STG is a bit stronger than it was but a 17k car should still come under 20k euro. And they're still dropping remember, more and more 17s 18s and even 19s will be coming on market forcing downward pressure on price of 16s

Nice paint and alloys but I'm looking for leather seats and maybe some other extras like pro nav.

You could do well with taking better photos to be honest.

If you still have the original wheels I'd put them back on. Those reps really take from the car. A lot of people would dismiss it as a result.

Don't knock the cloth sports seats until you've tried them.

I've leather buckets in one car and I prefer the cloth in the daily F30.

Yes I actually agree. While they can look nice I'm always wary when I see non-standard wheels on a car. It makes me wonder what other DIY modifications the person has made to the car.

    Good feedback, thanks.

I'll take better pics later. Don't have original wheels (should have kept them!) But looking in adverts they can be had for €200-300 if the aftermarkets are really a big deal. Only other mod was the black grill, which seems very common in other f30s.

Appreciate the feedback though. Good look with finding your next car.

I like the wheels, but some tyre polish would go a long way in some new photos I reckon.

Can anyone tell me how much it will cost (roughly) to charge the 330e battery from 0% (or 5%) to 100% on a home EV charger? Obviously it depends on electricity tariffs. I don't have a night saver meter or anything, just a standard rate in or around 18 cents per unit kWh.

    Thanks

    I always work from needing 7kwhr, so 7 *0.18 = €1.26

    Night rate is half that.
