As I say, if folks are upticking their orders in non-perishables and bottled water etc and you're finding it harder to come across certain things like hand sanitiser in shops (anecdotally) then some folks are already looking at this thing and deciding to prepare for the situation they have in China, where people are isolating at home. Most households can probably only do a week like that with what's on hand before someone has to go out to a shop and mingle. No point trying to stock the larder when everyone figures out (if it gets that bad) it's a real problem and it's like lord of the flies down in Lidl.

Jesus Christ this is all conjecture and tin foil hat stuff. The risk is currently low and everyone I know is out at work, nobody self isolating whilst sitting on a pile of brennan’s bread...

Not suggesting anyone is currently self isolating. Suggesting they're stockpiling.

An hour after the first case was confirmed in the Philippians.... Go on Twitter now and search "Panic buying" and there's a ton of this from just there over the past short period of time.

Russia is closing it's border with China.
Great. The more isolated Russia is from the world the better.
Likely that's for their benefit, not anyone elses.

Being in the largest country in the world with plenty of natural resources, hardy (un-woke) attitudes and widely available hardware. Likely that would beat somewhere like downtown Mumbai or an overcrowded Island full of Instagrammers, under full pandemic conditions.

Yeah you did and seem to be getting increasingly hysterical posting picture of people queueing in an orderly way stating that it’s ‘panic buying’ ‘Some folks settling in already for the long wait at home.’ ‘Lord of the flies’.

I wouldn’t say they’re asleep at the wheel. In their meeting yesterday they mentioned that they were taking socioeconomic implications into consideration.
I’d imagine we’ll have a big update at the weekend if the projected infections/deaths are true.

WHO already admitted (in footnotes) that they got the assesment wrong now for several days. A (wild) 'CT' might be that they'd be happy to sit on their hands, and wait. Then get a massive multiple vax programme rolled out.

This obscene over reaction will lead to panic buying and then a run on the banks for cash creating far more problems for everyone.

The messaging needs to be managed better and media need to take their responsibilities seriously.

Yes there is cruelty everywhere in the world but little compares to the Yulin Dog Meat festival. The individuals who take part or who stand by and condone are in my opinion, inhuman disgusting and barbaric.

I understand how barbaric this festival is and am not dismissing that for one minute as it is deeply disturbing . However I’ve seen extremely racists remarks about Chinese people which is very unfair as I’m sure a lot of them don’t agree with this festival either.

I do think that some people have an inability to recognise how cruel intensive farming of pig and chickens can be in our own country but people seem to ok with this as they only see the end product nicely packaged on the shelf. I’ve seen footage of pig farms and it is horrendously cruel. Stuff of nightmares if I’m honest and they are as intelligent as dogs.

I know boards is great for pulling apart the nuance in posts, but highlighting specifically what I said:

"preppers (ie, people who are preparing) have gone into full swing."

"worst case scenario they're able to isolate themselves. (future tense)"

As for panic buying, I'm just quoting the people on the ground. The Philippians post from an hour after they got their first case is from a journalist in one of their larger media companies.

Agreed. As I mentioned upthread, when it goes it goes quickly.

The hand sanitiser stuff is good in a pinch and is convenient good old fashioned soap and water is actually better. Carbolic for the win.

OK found the gas mask. Though this look will not go down well in the local tesco...

Really don't believe that hand sanitiser or face masks will do much to help anybody.
People tend to get hysterical when these outbreaks happen.
The best thing to do is just keep living your life. If you get sick, let your body fight it off.

I feel like its taking a while to process the scale of china's reaction. It's pretty clear from the actions of China what a big problem this is. Usually it would be all over the news 'Capital city of China is a ghost town!', 'Shanghai streets empty'... tens of millions quarantined. Chinese economy SHUTS DOWN. etc.

The numbers have gone kind of linear the past two days which is a massive improvement at the epicenter... IF they were representative. We also assumed it would go linear as the new cases outgrew the testing capacity, and this is supported by the suspected cases continuing roughly on the original trajectory.

I've seen enough evidence of craziness and cabin fever kicking in in China to know that this 'perfectly calm' lockdown has a time limit.

Easy to say if you don't have a pre existing condition, or young kids at home, or are caring for / in close proximity to elderly parents etc. If you're a young couple living alone you're grand, but I wouldn't fancy giving my elderly parents a push on their way to their reward.

Basic hygiene procedures do an enormous amount for all infection, not just this. At the herd level it's one of the most cost-effective methods to control infection. There's a very good reason why hygiene prectices like handwashing, not spitting in public and so on have seperately developed as a hard etiquette in many different cultures.

The problem is filthy dirtbags who ignore hygiene and endanger everyone.

I'd suggest setting it to 3.6 Roentgens. Not great, but not terrible.

I'd say the risk is probably above low.

Not medium but above low given the rate of infections. Its growing significantly by the day.

He really is fantastic, I’d be going off my head in alone like that. Hopefully doing the videos is helping him and giving him something to do.

I could handle that fine(home alone for weeks). My annoyances would be similar to his, not being able to go out for food: Considering this is the country that invented chinese takeaway, the food you get out and about is phenon-nomnomnom-enal.

Cooking with only one wok but be an annoyance too - I also love to cook. I have 3 woks.
