Any info. on people immune? Or have any of the small number of people who have successfully been cleared of nCov developed immunity?

There have been several reports of people testing positive but being asymptomatic. Most recently a child in Japan

So will they keep them on the ship for a week or two? I can't imagine being stuck on a crowded ship with thousands of people during a virus scare.

Jesus that would be scary, vomiting bugs can run rampant through cruise ships you'd hate to think your stuck onboard with corona.

    https://cmmid.github.io/ncov/airport_screening_report/airport_screening_preprint_2020_01_28.pdf
Only 63% of infected people passing through airports are detected due to sensitivity of exit and entry screening, and the proportion of cases which are asymptomatic.
63% is a really good job imo, but unfortunately it only takes one person to slip through to spread it to many.

1st case of h2h transmission recorded in S.Korea and Taiwan, new cases in Vietnam and Australia

Immunity isn't naturally available for a bat/snake coronavirus, there are some that have recovered, after illness, however this is only the 1st wave, and it may further mutate.

Read somewhere a family of six had it, but each individual family member had small variations of mutation ongoing when tested.

Apparently coronaviruses are unlikely to mutate. Influenza viruses readily mutate though.

Would not like to be the CEO or major shareholder of any international travel/tourism provider right at this moment (inc cruises or airlines).

The markets had a slight rally yesterday after previous dips, but think confidence is slowly being lost, down 1% across Europe since opening, oil down again to $58, gold to $1,580

I wouldn’t say they’re asleep at the wheel. In their meeting yesterday they mentioned that they were taking socioeconomic implications into consideration.

I’d imagine we’ll have a big update at the weekend if the projected infections/deaths are true.

That reminds me... I've a Soviet era NBC gas mask with all the trimmings somewhere. That should work. Might freak out the neighbours mind you..
The 10L waterbottle (as photgraphed by someone in China yesterday) is yer only man.

Gotta think green and recycle, a quick rinse in the rain, shake and 5sec wave of the UVC wand, and it's ready to go again.

Another big increase in infections, just shy of 8,000 now, double what it was 48 hours ago

I know this is After Hours and all but this is a busy thread and this type of unfounded bulls1ttery isn't helpful in the slightest.

It's basic probability, they essentially won the lottery, what are the odds, very low if 300 cases is correct....

Wonder how this will play out in India, could be another hotspot

No face masks available in Boots or McCabes in Dundrum. No hand gels or wipes in prominent position for sale. It seems there is little preparedness here. We should this week have hand gel dispensers in public places. People will have to improvise face masks with scarves etc, that go in for the wash daily.

    Today's update shows about 8,000 offical cases (as 21:00 EST(US) 29th Jan)

Why would you wash them daily?

Why would you wash them daily?

Because they will be filthy after a couple of hours use.

I wonder what the re-infection rates are. Has China closed all its borders now.

The totally recovered numbers will be interesting in the next week or 2

It's actually where the term Quarantine comes from: a 40 day isolation of ships during epidemic.
Fly the Yellow Jack flag and sit it out.

Had a quick look earlier on Amazon and online in a few places, gold dust. Also now a load of gougers on ebay selling one mask per sale atinflated prices.

This kind of stuff is probably/partly why governments, the Chinese in this case, might not be fully forthcoming with all of the data.

I know its not advisable but can surgical masks be, in a pinch, reused or washed in any way?
Even if not totally effective it would be better than nothing.

Scarves etc won't block the very small particles that carry infection.

Little preparedness is also some people who are very prepared. Big organisations have been buying up all the stock of hand sanitiser they can get their hands on for example, and you can bet your ass the preppers have gone into full swing. Pal of mine works in logistics at a major multiple and has said their home deliveries of bottled water are notably gone up. Some folks settling in already for the long wait at home. Best case scenario I guess it blows over and they have plenty of long life goods to get through in their gaffs, worst case scenario they're able to isolate themselves.
(Re: health workers staying at home): Never really thought about that, must be so difficult to say goodbye to your family to go to work when this illness seems so infectious, then to go home and risk bringing it back.

    From 2009:
As many as 85 percent of healthcare workers in Britain may stay home from work in the event of a influenza pandemic, a survey indicates.

The survey, published in the journal BMC Public Health, suggests that levels of absenteeism may be significantly higher than official estimates and that willingness rather than ability plays the largest role in healthcare workers' decisions to go to work.

Health workers are mammies and daddies, too.

N95 will only stop 0.5microns, so even those have limitations against e.g. 0.2micon coronaviruses.
Surely a DIY fine weave cotton fabric with elastic could be used. Double/triple layer if breathing isn't affected, then steralise often to re-use.

Don't think they're any good once wet, unless made of nylon/cotton fabric etc.

What are you talking about? Who is settling in already for the 'long wait at home'?

Russia is closing it's border with China.

Great. The more isolated Russia is from the world the better.

As I say, if folks are upticking their orders in non-perishables and bottled water etc and you're finding it harder to come across certain things like hand sanitiser in shops (anecdotally) then some folks are already looking at this thing and deciding to prepare for the situation they have in China, where people are isolating at home. Most households can probably only do a week like that with what's on hand before someone has to go out to a shop and mingle. No point trying to stock the larder when everyone figures out (if it gets that bad) it's a real problem and it's like lord of the flies down in Lidl.
