"Nothing happens without an official giving a go ahead" All he did was confirm without any motivation that the Chinese government's shutdown of the city is working. People aren't travelling.

These threads are always gas. Why would he lose his job.. Because he spoke on the radio while living in China..

Yes, absolutely. There's been a good few youtubers who have had their visa revoked because they are making videos about china and, in fairness, was asked to stop.

You can get fired for mentioning Taiwan in a lesson btw :P

Yes, I know of a language teacher who had to make a public apology to his students and the assembled staff at the university where he was teaching for having (unwittingly) put up a map of Asia which showed Taiwan in a different colour to China. I don't think it was even a paper map, just a video projection.

He very nearly lost his job over it.

There was a very interesting interview on Matt Frei (LBC radio) this morning. He spoke to an Irish psychology teacher who is working in Wuhan College right now and has been living there for two years. If anyone wants to listen back......

Interesting interview. He says they knew about market since before Christmas and he is wearing swim goggles as people getting infected through eyes.

bought a bunch of face masks and stuff today. I know people probably think its crazy but if just one case is mentioned in Ireland, were ****ed.

The HSE have people on trolleys on good days. I recon it will be called soon by the CDC as an international problem since its in France and USA.

I went to 5 pharmacies today and only 1 had face masks and I bought almost all they had (10). The second said their supplier is sold out and the last one said a number of people came in looking for them.

It's going to be like the milk and bread during the winter snow. You know RTE will only announce it at the last minute.

I'm a firm believer that we should wear masks out of respect during flu season anyway

    I prefer potato and leek.
The don't know what animal it came from yet.
When ever I go to Asia, I go usually go vegetarian, depending on the hygiene standards.

We don't know how virulent the pathogen is. Comparing the data and mirroring it with Sers/ Mers is questionable. That's a comparison based on the number of infected and dead, the China state media is revealing, and maybe untrue?

We actually do have quite a bit of data as there are many Universities and virology experts actively mapping. The R0 of nCov was rated at 3.8 a couple of days ago, but this has been revised downwards to 2.5. Very scary numbers, but the next few days will give more accurate stats.

By the way the numbers of people getting the virus, they will need a few of those hospitals in a few days, it is rapidly climbing, and some think that the true numbers may not be coming out or published

That's not a hospital in the usual meaning of the word. There won't be any MRI or PET scanners. There will probably be a crematorium, however.

The usual hyperbole from people with little idea of what it's like to live or teach in Mainland China. I've taught there for over a decade, in both private and public schools/universities.

I've spoken about Taiwan, Tibet, etc in classes without losing my job, or receiving any warnings. I have been called up to speak to their "morality department" whose role is to protect the minds of the students, but that was for discussing contraceptives & sex in a class. Right now, it's not a good idea to be "open" simply because of the desire to return China to being a more moral and traditional society.

It entirely depends on the type of institution, and how political they are. Any foreigner living in China knows that they should moderate their speech, and to avoid political subjects.. It's just easier, because few Chinese people will accept your opinion or knowledge on the subject, which will be seen as a result of western propaganda. It's generally a requirement for any foreigner wanting to stay here long-term to be aware of the social and political changes that happen. It's the foreigners who come for a "gap" year with a chip on their shoulder, putting down China, who tend to receive any condemnation or criticism.. and it's usually deserved. I've noticed that foreigners who talk politics in China tend to be rather ignorant of Chinese history, or have a very shallow understanding of the culture... Just throwing around western logic or morality on a very different situation.

As for making videos/Youtube, the government has issues with anything made official. You can say a lot of things here, but recording anything negative is a "no no". It's common knowledge.

As for the virus, I left China on Wednesday night. Not one inspection for the disease. I flew from Xi'an to Istanbul to Dublin. Not one single check for temperature or any other measure. I've head similar points from friends who flew to other European airports.

Frankly, I'm not surprised the virus has spread. I was amazed at the lack of precautions TBH.

They are building a hospital made up of portacabins in a field.

I don't think Irish people would settle for hospitals like that.

I can't help thinking in the Ireland of 40 or 50 years ago with no heavy safety regulations and little or no planning needed that a bunch of lads here could have done similar...
