3 women's champions gone in one day. The women side is wide open now, anyone of the top players left can win it if they keep their nerve. Not sad to see Williams go out, can't stand the way she goes on on the court screaming and grunting all the time. The screeching when she wins a point for 15 all is unreal, it would be ok at important points but like 15 all or something like that is annoying. Think she loves the drama and focus being on her.

Good news is Gauff won again today beating Osaka.

Federer in trouble here 1 set down to Millman. He's can't seem to hit a groundstroke that will go over the net and his first serve has deserted him. A thoroughly poor performance so far.

That press conference with Serena was a disgrace, no credit given to Wang.

Over the last number of years I think the Australian Open has become the best major of the four, it has the best atmosphere of the four majors, and the facilities are second to none.
Not for me. Agree that it has the best atmosphere (although USO is probably a close second), but I think the scheduling/timing of the event (being at the start of the calender year) just doesn't do it for me. And the time difference is an issue too, particularly in the early rounds. For me, I'll always associate the "core" of the tennis season with the Summer months, and the build up to the FO and Wimbledon make them special. Obviously, everyone has there own preference though

Wimbledon's the best. The French Open I associate with Nadal's dominance and lack of great clay court players for this gen so it's easily my least favourite.

Yeah I think January is just way too early in the year for it

I always associate elite events with being well into the season in a given sport. I personally don't understand a major tournament taking place only a few weeks into a new season.

Would personally like them to be scheduled much more like the golf

It's Serena Williams. Not known for crediting others. 38 years old and around since 1999. That's not going to happen at this point.

Steady yet he's only 2 matches played

Lets see how he gets on today against a home player who he lost to at a slam before

Well at least i haven't been left with egg on my face so far anyway :pac:

Millman is always tricky for Fed. Add the night match element and home crowd atmosphere and it becomes even trickier

Swap Indian Wells (which for a time was vying to become a major in it's own right ) with AO and the calender would be a lot better IMO.

Each to their own but with Golf I think it would be better if the majors were more spaced out like tennis. I personally have no issue with a major early in the season.

Probably the reason for the AO in January is because it is the Australian summer. It probably could be moved to either November or February/March.

I get the reasoning... but just in my own personal opinion I don't like the timing of it

I can't see it being moved however. The way the world is gone we'll sooner see IW or Shanghai upgraded to a major in March or October I reckon ($$$)

Millman has given Feds nothing. And Feds has shown nothing, yet he's eeked out 2-1 sets lead.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,930 ✭✭✭jr86

    Millman breaks in the 4th

very interesting to see can he take it to a 5th

A home 5-setter v Fed will surely do wonders for raising his profile back home

And Millman breaks in the 5th. Millman must be superfit, he's played doubles as well this week.

    Doubles isn't particularly taxing though.

I think most players avoid it mainly down to the scheduling issues it brings

bloody hell, Millman was 10-1 to win this match!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,941 ✭✭✭dominatinMC

Fed breaks back! Honestly can't call this match. Can't believe I'm saying that about a Fed-Millman matchup either...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,809 ✭✭✭Hector Savage

Federer fans such sycophants, I can't believe he is the favourite here with Millman...

edit sorry to clarify I mean crowd favourite

Millman playing like a 2.0 Monfils.

Don't see why people are so surprised, Millman beat Federer at the 2018 US Open and Federer is 38 now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,809 ✭✭✭Hector Savage

Didn't know they have a final set tiebreak at 6-6 now at AO.

Is that new this year ?
So French is the only one now where in theory it can go to 100-100 ....

Yeah all the slams have unique ways to finish matches now

First to 10 tie-break at the AO

That's why we love 5 setters at Grand Slams! The likes of Ben Rothenberg et al. who are advocating for Bo3 can piss right off!!

turned it back on at 8-7 Millman in the Champo Tie Break.
Didnt realise it was 8-4 to Millman.
    Well done Roger.
Kudos for getting it done somehow.

So will a 5 setter at this stage of the tournament be a positive or a negative for Federer?
ie a decent bit of practice or the 38 year old would have preferred to conserve energy for the 2nd week?

negative, can't see him reach semis to be honest ... where is he seeded to meet Nadal ?

Federer was a bit lucky, but you make your own luck.

That's a good win for him. Millman is a bogey opponent. That was a horror draw for him and he came through. I don't expect him to win the tournament but he's still in there. Wouldn't write him off either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,158 ✭✭✭Royale with Cheese

Happy Fed got through but can't see him winning it, think I'm actually happier at seeing Serena get dumped out.

  • Site Banned Posts: 22 Guava Juice

You could see how emotional Fed was after that match, he was stretched to the absolute limit mentally and emotionally. As a Fed fan since 2004 I'm delighted he's through, hopefully this match will shake out the cobwebs and help him raise his level.

Millman will be very disappointed, I thought he was the better player over the five sets, however it's only the final score that matters. Similar to the Wimbledon final, Federer was the better player that time but somehow managed to lose.

Yeah no harm for the women's game. Serena is 38 now and anytime I've seen her since her return she's looked unfit and ponderous out on court. It was an almighty travesty she made a Wimbledon final last year with the condition she was in, but luckily Halep absolutely hockeyed her

A legend of the game obviously but I don't think its a good look if a 38 year old way past her pomp is simply powering her way to slams.

Even leaving all that aside, her classless celebrations when she wins a run of the mill point against a no-hoper, her antics in all those infamous US open finals, yeah I won't be sorry if she never wins another slam, she's won more than enough anyway

I want her to beat Court's 'record' but I can't root for her either, so it's a weird catch-22. I mean Serena isn't a very nice person but Margaret Court is repulsive.

I know we'll be a while waiting but maybe Coco Gauff will ultimately do it!!

Great to see her backing up her Wimbledon run.

Fed was quite lucky today. This was always a danger, he breezes through R1 and R2 and then comes up against a banana skin. He certainly is the most vulnerable of the big 3.

A great match all the same.

Jaysus, no pressure on her anyway!!

She's clearly hugely talented and seems blessed with the right temperament, but even if she started winning a slam every year from now, she'd be 37 by the time she'd equalled the record. I have a feeling it will never be beaten.

Haha I'm hardly being serious sure goodness knows how her career will go

I'd be surprised if Williams still didn't win more slams though, she'll play a few more years yet I'd say and her power alone is enough to intimidate a lot of the tour

But sure who knows how tennis will look in the future. Could well be a point where there's even more than 4 slams a year

Realistically i think she has this year and next to do it, after that you're seriously pushing boat out. It's not impossible by any stretch, but dont fancy it personally, more inclined to think her winning days are done. Its not quite a vintage era exactly but there are still enough players there, likes of Andreescu or Barty, against whom i dont think her power or intimidation factor will be enough. Admire her for keeping on though, and hope she does it for point made above in relation to the odious Court.

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference.

I think Serana is lacking in the first and last right now.

Nadal has definitely improved compared to the last 2 rounds. He is killing it behind his service games and clinical on break opportunities against PCB. He is leading 6-1 6-2

Bang of an impending meltdown starting to come off Kyrgios here.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,930 ✭✭✭jr86

I'm unsure whether Nadal could have handpicked a better third round opponent than Carrena Busta

    Weaponless players aren't beating Nadal

Let's see how he looks against thiem presuming they both make the quarters. Won't be as easy when he has winners flying past him and someone who can go toe to toe on rallies

I've a sneaky feeling Thiem could dump him out here

Kyrgios won't have the discipline but even that could be a slog for Rafa

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,930 ✭✭✭jr86

Who is this zverev imposter who is actually breezing through sets at a major and what has he done with the real Zverev?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,930 ✭✭✭jr86

I'd like to think she won't win anymore but put someone like sharapova, radwanska or Errani across the net from her last July at the Wimbledon final and she would be currently holding that title despite turning up at the event rusty, blatantly unfit and even somewhat indifferent at times (committing to mixed doubles with Murray, seriously?)

Luckily halep is a very talented player who bet her off the court but I could very well see Serena powering her way through the rounds at Wimbledon and the US for the next year or 2 at least with possibly only the draw gods standing in her way

I think Williams has done wonders for women's tennis, without herself and her sister ratings would never be what they are over the last two decades, she's a huge draw wherever she goes. Add to that she's been important too over the years in ensuring hopeless players like errani haven't been fluking majors. In an era where many of the top players have struggled for consistency Serena has ensured the standard of the game overall hasn't fallen off a cliff completely.

Her time is well up now though, she's much slower, her mental strength has declined astronomically, she's not in the same planet fitness wise as she was. She's relying on aura alone and brute power these days.

But I can't blame anyone not wanting to see her winning any more after that embarrassing affair at the US open final v Osaka. There's been plenty more incidents over the years but that was the real coup de grace. Don't get me wrong her story is inspiring, and she ideally would be a superb role model but so much is spoiled by such diva and drama queen behaviour

In today's celebrity worshipping society though once someone is a champion of their sport it seems they can behave how they like and fans will just lap it up
