After some thinking and gaining some solid info from reading other logs, I decided to try this to pick up some further advice and hopefully give some back over time. Sorry for the long winded first post, they will be more concise after this. Reason for starting a log to track will become obvious when you read my previous shortcomings below.

    Bit of background

I'm 38. I played plenty off football over the years but was never really fit through those years. I did enough to get by, but didn't push myself at all and took shortcuts in training. Knocked that on the head about 6 years ago due to a continuous knee problem, that eventually had to get operated on. Made a few attempts to come back in the astro format, which I enjoyed but never lasted long, due to always somehow hurting the same knee which left me hobbling and down on myself for weeks after.
Decided around this time to get myself proper fit away from football for first time in my adult life, by just cardio gym work, short fast runs and started to use the bike all the time(rarely drive anymore to this day). Diet was good around then too and within a few months was trimmer and fitter then I ever was . Completed my first 10km around then in 46 mins followed by a 44mins a few weeks later. I then did the DLR bay 10k in August(2013) and cut time again to 42.47 mins for a PB. I never kicked on and didn't run again that year for whatever reason(lazy) which I regret.

In next couple of years similar pattern and would yo yo a bit with weight. I never got really big due to the bit of cycling but I wasn't fit and I had a Desperate Dan type chin in some periods. Around summer of 2015 again got into a fitness buzz. Had done a couple of local park runs around the 22/23 min mark but signed up to the docklands 5k to see if I could get around that mark or even somewhere in the 21's. I blitzed it and got 19.34 PB. How I didn't kick on after that, i don't know but yeh probably just lazy again.
Didn't do much again the next couple of years 2016/2017 bar two 10k races within a couple of weeks where i did a 50 min followed by a 46 min one. I don't remember 2018 at all and I don't just mean running, most of the year is a blank to me - ha.. I probably did a few runs here and there.

So before this block of DCM19 training I had ran about five 10k races and maybe four 5kms including parkruns in my life with nothing for 3 years. I did more casual running in the first 6 months of this year then I ever did, which was on average 1 hour of running a week split over either 2 or 3 runs, where I just ran fast with no real purpose but enjoyed it nonetheless.

DCM Plan, lack of plan ?

It always crossed my mind that I'd like to run a marathon and kidded myself into a few times,("ah sure do a few runs, increase it a bit and sure you'll be grand type attitude").
I caught wind earlier in the year that a person I know well in "real life" jackc101 was training for the Cork marathon and was thinking to myself, how was he managing all that training with two young kids same age as my two. On a family visit to his neck of the woods, I saw for myself how. He was getting up at stupid o clock and putting in the hard graft before breakfast/work etc. It definitely got me thinking and in truth inspired me, that I could do that too - I told him as much as we walked out of McGrattans last week. On a related note, I was delighted how well he did in DCM and taking approx 18 mins off his Cork time in such a short space of time - Bravo..

I signed up on 1st of July after seeing the KBC promoted ads every day for a week- I was lucky to get in. Once I did, i ran more then ever. Got myself a Garmin(oh look at this guy, thinking hes's a runner) and just started going down the Forrest Gump route of just running. First 2 weeks or so of running I was running sub 8 min pace all the time.
I was then working of a plan that didn't really suit me. I heard of the boards plan as jackc101 was using it and slowly starting to convert to it. I started to ask questions then and started getting great advice. Slowed up everything and pretty much 90% of my runs from then on in were casual pace following the plan as close as work allowed.
Signed up for a couple of pre Marathon races. For the South Dub 10k, I had to work and was away for frank Duffy 10 mile so unfort missed both of them.

Early August,I returned to DLR Bay 10k in Dun Laoghaire where I had my previous PB 6 years ago.
I ran a really positive race with a negative split to come in at 40 mins 54 seconds for a PB. For anyone who doesn't know it, its not an easy course but great for a negative split as first half is more climbing and 2nd is more downhill. I ran the 2nd half in an even 20 mins. Its a well organised race too.

I then took on the Half in the Phoenix Park. I was feeling sharp on the day but wasn't sure what pace i was going to go. Started off with the 1.40 balloons for first mile or so but pulled away then and came in with 1.32.46 PB with another approx 1 minute negative split. I was buzzing after that and I could now allow myself to alter my original 3.50 marathon target which i inputted on the DCM site as expected finish back on the 1st of July.

My DCM report is the novices/grads thread - not sure how to link it.

I was basically delighted how it went and there is not very much I'd change about it. Despite my struggles with legs cramping in the last couple of miles i still manged a 30 seconds or so negative split for a time of 3.25.20 which far exceeded what I thought I could manage. I think, I overplayed the issues I was having with legs cramp on that report as everything was more dramatic in it, as i wrote it with a few drinks on me. The last 2 miles were a bit slower, but not by as much on the clock, as it felt. I had already passed hundreds of people in the 2nd half. Stopping for those few seconds to stretch just before RDS did me the world of good.

Loads of thanks again to mentors in novice thread as if I hadn't found that thread I would have blown a gasket by mile 10.

So now here I am starting a log so I don't get lazy again. Not fully sure of plans or what plan I should do but i will be running. I have signed up for Dublin next year anyway for starters. I might look to improve on my 5k time at Jingle bells run and would like to go sub 40 for 10km in early 2020. Any tips or advice welcome.

Last week just the one tester run on Sunday with nothing to report. I was going to do nothing all week but had planned sports massage today so wanted to see if anywhere in particular needed to be targeted. Everywhere was the answer.

    Sunday 3rd - 3.3 Miles @9.32

Best of luck with the log.

Those are very impressive times for someone with limited running experience. You obviously have a natural talent for it, and with a bit of consistency and structure you will make huge progress. Here is your marathon report for anyone looking.

Was planning a light enough week with possibly 2 or 3 runs due to me been away. Post marathon treat for the family and myself to be fair, landed us in Lanzarote. Dessert after breakfast, beers from lunch was the diet for the week. Not sure all inclusive hols work well with me ðŸ˜

Got out the first morn after we arrived and realised how scenic and run friendly the route was, so knew i'd want to run it as often as poss. All morning runs.

    Tuesday 5miles at 8.52
    Wed 5.5 miles @9.47
Thurs 4.22 miles at 8.23 (4 mile progression run, really enjoyed first bit of intensity since DCM)
    Friday 5.10 miles at 11.01
Sunday 4.22 miles @8.48 (back in dub for chillier run)

    Total 24 miles for week

Decided on a whim, I wanted to race something this coming weekend. For my sins have signed up to run the movember 5k on sat. 10k seemed to be have been sold out. Not sure of course if its a pb option but sure i'll give it a rattle anyway. Plan is to do some runmuting this week so easy enough runs up to it.

:) unfortunately not. I'd like to take a trip there myself. If I remember correctly, the day I opened this account, I was reading an article on how a load of wallabys ended up on an Island off Dublin.

    Monday 18th
    6.57 miles @8.42
Commute run home easy enough initially. When i got out of town where paths were quitier, decided to throw in some strides.

    Tuesday
    6.81 miles @8.32
Runmute Progress for 6 miles. Nothing major and almost naturally takes a few seconds each mile off by the fact most of this route is downhill.

    Wednesday
    5 miles@9.05
Easy enough run around Marlay Park

    Thursday
    6.76miles@8.53
Another runmute on uphill route. Nothing to report here

    Friday
    7miles@8.36
Runmute in morning. I was going to get bus here as had a few pints night before and was wet out. For whatever reason, i decided to run and felt the better off it as soon as i got into work.

    Saturday
    Movember almost 5k run report
As I said in an earlier post, i wanted to race something this week but wasnt going to take it too serious.
Woke up and saw weather and was thinking of swerving it and maybe doing local park run instead.
Had increased milage and ran 32 miles for week by Friday and just done 6 days in row so legs were feeling a little stiff too. I had all the excuses ready.
Eventually after procrastinating for ages, I grew a pair and headed in to the Phoenix Park.

    Mile one
Went out too quick and legs felt like jelly for first couple of mins. I was at 5.30 mile pace and knew i had no chance of keeping that up. Slowed it up and found my pace soon after. 6.07 mile
    Mile 2
Happy with pace, juggling positions with 2 other blokes for most of race. Few ahead including one well ahead but we had created a gap to field behind. 6.07 mile
    Mile 3 ++
Was looking forward to line at this stage. Legs just didnt feel that fresh, socks were soaked through and was running last km into a head wind. I realised at 4km mark that that this race distance wasnt going to be 5k. The line seemed too close and my watch readings wernt adding up. I didnt fully push myself for a final sprint as distance error had annoyed me and didnt see the point now. Due to this, forgot to stop garmin on time at line. Mile pace 6.10.

18.34 was my chip time which i would have been over the moon with for 5k but unfort the race was no further than 4.89k. So not quite a one minute PB for me, in fact not PB at all due to this.
I know these things can happen so not too bothered and I wont slate the race as its all for a great cause.

On the positive side, I now know that sub 19 is very realistic target for mefor jingle bells in 2 weeks.

Tomor, i may still run but prob should take a rest day

Bit of a strange week for me.
Not necessarily feeling sick, but didn't feel myself all week in terms of been a bit lethargic.
Initially, It seemed that running that 5k race the previous week had taken more out of me then I thought it would, but I think it was more my body was fighting something as there had been sickness in the house.. I was planning on running a 10 miler on Saturday but decided I needed the rest . Sunday was always going to be a bit of a write off for me as I was at milestone birthday bash on sat night.

    Monday
    6.86 miles @9.11

    Tuesday
    6.92 Miles @8.31

    Wednesday
    5.15 Miles 3 miles Tempo interval @8.00
I wasn't going to run at all today due to what I said above. I started out with first mile at just shy of 9min pace so was just going to do 3 miles at that pace then. I felt good after that mile so there and then decided to do some intensity for 2 miles which turned into 3, before cooling down for last mile or so. Heart rate was consistent with pace change. The reason I mention that will become evident below.

    Thursday/Friday
Due to Wednesdays run going fine, decided to do my cross between cycle/runmute for Thursday and Friday, which i had also done earlier in week. This consists of me cycling in the first day and running home and vice versa for next day. The 2nd run in these blocks are generally a little bit quicker due to terrain
    6.7miles @9.09
    6.78@8.53

For low effort/easy pace runs, both these runs had a far higher avg heart rate then what I would generally have. I Had noticed that morning my resting heart rate was up too so assuming was fighting illness.

    Sat - Rest

    Sun
Didn't really fancy run at all, as was heavy going previous night. Waited till the night and went out for a short recovery run. Heart rate back to normal anyway. To top of the week, came home and the 1 year old puked on me and i then walked straight into a door which left one of those cartoon type lumps on my forehead - good times.
    3.22@ 9.47

    Total miles for week 35.6

Plan for coming week is jingle bells on Saturday. Will run first half of week but will rest thurs and fri to have a good go at this race. I want to PB (19.34) but I think I can go under 19 mins if all falls in place.

  • Registered Users Posts: 735 ✭✭✭Treviso

You were right to have a break over the weekend if you were feeling lethargic. I think it will benefit you for next week's 5k.

Will be interested to see how next week goes for you and best of luck for your sub 19 attempt. I would do 2 or 3 miles on Friday to give the legs a bit of a stretch before Saturday's race.

    Monday - 7.05 Miles @8.44
Run of the mill run mute home until 5 mile mark when I wanted to do some strides/intervals to get up to 5k pace with jingle bells race looming in the horizon. I was just about able to get to the pace I wanted, but struggled to sustain it even for 30 seconds. I did a few reps here with same result but wasn't overly concerned at this stage as was tired after work.

Tuesday 6.74 Miles (5miles Progression @ 8.31 up to MP)
    Mile 1- 9.06
    Mile 2 - 8.43
Mile 3 - 8.37(not much progress here, think I forgot what I was meant to be at)
    Mile 4 - 7.56
    Mile 5 - 7.27
    Miles 6 to 6.74 - Cool down 9.00

Wednesday 5.2 miles @8.42 issues with watch meant I restarted here and did
    a further 1.33 Miles @7.44
Was trying to get to 5k pace here again but was barely able to get to it and again felt I'd struggle to get to where i wanted to be on Saturday which was a sub 19 or thereabouts. My PB from a few years ago was 19.34 from Grant Thornton run and I was thinking at this stage, "no chance pal".

    Thursday Rest

    Friday 5.02 miles@9.08
Different start point here for me for my runmute. Was planning maybe doing an easy 3 miles and then getting dart for last leg of my journey to keep legs fresh. It was 3.3 miles to Landsdowne road dart station so that'll do. As I was pulling up beside station here, a Dart just flew off which meant i would have had to wait another minimum of 10 mins in the cold in my running gear. I thought F that and ran the rest of way in instead(secretly happy)

    Jingle Bells 5k
Start of week, I had a plan in my head, that I Should PB and could sneak under 19 minutes. As week wore on, I was less confident due to early runs in the week.
I was going to change Garmin to Km's for this but knew what I needed to do in Miles format so left it be in the end.

My plan was to try do the first mile approx 6.10 max and similar to 2nd mile, then go gung ho from then on if the body allowed.
I got myself in position around the sub 20 marker at the start.
Found the start quite conjested then and felt like the first few hundred metres, I was trying to find a way past and dodge people. I thought I was running about 8 minute mile pace but looked at watch and was 6.20, so that was a pleasant surprise and opposite to earlier in week. The bit of conjestion in hindsight here definitely helped me with my race plan. I had done a tune up race 2 weeks ago (Mo Run) and I went out too fast and was isolated for large parts there and then struggled a bit with pace later on.
First mile rang in at 6.07 so was content here and within where I wanted to be.

I noticed during the 2nd mile on Furze road, it was a bit more exposed to wind here. Looked at watch, was floating about 6.20 pace so needed to drive it on a bit. This is where i was happiest with how I ran the race. The reason being, If I could shelter by using people around me , I would take it. If i felt like I could push on I would and grab hold of next group and repeat. In fact, it only dawned on me afterwards, there was only one stage in the whole race where someone past me which I turned around then and passed him again climbing out of the furry glen. At some stage in the 2nd mile the ground was a bit slippy for about 20 steps or so. To my surprise, 2nd mile clocked in at 5.58

I was thinking at this stage, surely I can break 19.34 and there was a serious chance I could achieve my target of sub 19. On the other hand that was probably my fastest mile I have ever recorded, could I back it up by doing it again with the furry glen to come?
F it, I had to back myself at this stage. I kept driving, almost stopped looking at watch and to my surprise went through the furry glen with relative ease. Nice shout out from Skyblue46 at the top here. Probably due to my shortness in the height department, but I always find myself strong going up hills but less so on a fast downhill. Anyway, it was just a downhill to come and I was home so just kept one foot in front of other as fast as i could and couldnt wait to catch a glimpse of the finishing line. Quick glance at watch when i saw the line in distance and saw pace was sub 6, Jaysus I have this surely, bar a monumental collapse. Last 50 yards spotted the Other half and heard her say faster faster which made me giggle as thought to myslef FFS like, I'm flatout gimme a break :D. Got over the line, saw big clock hitting 18.50 and realised i had done my sub 19. Stopped the watch then realised, the news was even better, as I remembered , I had started a at least 15 seconds after leaders. My strava and chip time matched at 18.31 for a 1 minute and 3 second PB. I was elated, properly chuffed while trying to catch my breath back hanging over the railings.
3rd mile measured in at 5.48 followed by last bit at 5.35 avg pace. I couldn't belive I had been getting faster the whole time.

I wasn't sure of my thoughts of 5k races coming into this and It still not my favourite distance but how could I possibly complain. Super organised race and set up. Massive respect to Donore Harriers. My young lad was drinking his juice out of the mug this morn and he was delighted with the jellies and band playing christmas music at the end yesterday too. Bravo

    Sunday 3.39 Recovery miles @9.01
This was a bit pacier then intended. Think I just wanted it over.
Glutes and right hamstring were letting me know early on "you are not running again are ya? we are going to down tools pal". It was almost like the 10 mins half as.sed foam rolling, while sipping on a few beers, watching the Boxing wasnt enough TLC for them last night - the cheek(literally).

33 miles for week, A couple shy of what I wanted to do as a minimum, but cant complain since there was a hard race in there.

I need to start finalising a plan of action now. I have only signed up for DCM 2020 so far, so by this time next week, I hope to have signed up for a few more races in the coming months.

Yeh cheers, I probably will do Raheny - in fact i must pull the trigger as I see Trim 10 mile is sold out.

I signed up to Raheny 5 mile(thanks for the push/reminder here Huzzah). Still trying to finalise plan of action after that but considering 2 marathons. Looking at Cork at end of May and then Dublin again. Cork early bird until year end so will make a decision by then. It would allow for a bit of downtime in June which will suit with possible holiday etc. I will continue to keep things ticking over in the mean time with base stuff but would need to kick in to a marathon block of training by early Feb if I go that route. I would still include a 10km somewhere in spring to have a crack at sub 40. I may park the half until race series in September but advice welcome on that one. Next half I run, I will be targeting sub 90 mins.

    Mon - 7.01 miles @9.0 Mins Runmute
    Tues - 6.5 Miles @8.47 Mins Runmute

    Wednesday 10mile progression run @8.17
Enjoyed this early morning one. Tippy toe job not to wake anyone and out the door just after 5.30am. I was cold initially but warmed up quick enough with the increase in pace

    Thursday rest

    Friday 6.25 miles @9.02 mins.
Bit of a bonus run in end. I was half thinking I probably at most would have done a 3mile recovery in the evening here as had a Christmas party night before and was planning on letting lose. Unfort, had to leave that shindig a bit earlier than planned due to a sick child which turned out to be a bit of a false alarm(thank god). On the plus side, I felt fresh on the Friday to get out for this nice run in 2 local parks followed by completing the christmas shopping which I never would have done if I went the distance the night before.

    Saturday 4.2 Miles @8.02
I was tight for time here and knew I had approx half hour to complete something. Mixture of threshold and moderate pace.

    Sunday 8.03miles @9.02 miles
This was meant to be a LSR of at least 11miles but more than likely I probably would have done 12. I was looping back past my home at approx 8mile to get water I left out for myself. Bare in mind, It was about 7.15am and was only about 2 degrees max out. I spotted a smartly dressed young fella with a santa hat on passed out slumped up against a wall. Initially ran past him but conscience got better of me as no idea how long he was there and hypothermia ran through my head. He was rubbered and very cold. As I got closer, I half recognised him and knew general direction of his house so dragged him up and "guided" him home against his wishes at the time. I managed to get his house number out of him eventually and after a struggle we got his key into the door(hoping alarm wouldn't go off) and he got as far as the warm hall for a "rest". I left the key in his pocket and threw a load of coats over him acting as a duvet and bid him farewell. A lovely sight for whoever found him:eek: and he will have no idea how he got home. Anyway, decided another 4 miles wasn't going to happen :o now but my good deed was done.:D

42 miles running and about 300 metres dragging for the week

    Monday - 6.85 miles @ 8.52 mins Runmute
    Tuesday - 6.59 Miles @ 8.41 Mins Runmute
Wednesday - 5.91 Miles Hill sprints
Enjoyed this and have not done something like this for years since my football days. 9x45 seconds sprints with a 2 minute rest in between. It was a good incline and felt like i was getting stronger on each one which I think was a good sign. It wasn't until I looked back later, didn't quite get to the paces I thought I was doing, although there was a head wind to content with too. I felt the glutes and calves tighten later on in day but not too bad after a foam roll. I will revisit this session in January and alter the intervals a bit.
    Thursday - 6.7 miles @9.15 Mins Runmute
A wet slog. Started to rain as I left work and it just kept getting heavier. It was just hard work after yesterdays session and was glad to get home to a warm shower.(in hindsight, I should have got on the bike and took the rest from running)
    Friday - 6.5 Miles @7.55 Runmute
Surprisingly, felt really fresh that morn and was tighter for time so wanted/needed to add a bit of speed in here. Alternated the speed per mile between moderate and progression on the faster miles. Thoroughly enjoyed this one.
    1. 7.26
    2. 8.48
    3. 7.11
    4. 8.28
    5. 6.54
    6. 8.37
    0.5 - 8.08 avg pace

    Saturday - 11 miles @8.30mins
I had the feeling, I could have kept going for as long as I wanted. I think my easy pace has quickened recently(same effort and heart rate as previously but faster) so will assess that over next few longer ones to see if that is the case. This brought to an end to 9 days in a row.

Added a further 1 cool down mile at 9.44 as I stopped too abrupt on initial run and felt a twinge in my dodgy knee - glad i did as was grand then after cool down.
On a side note, my knee often worries me but I try to put it to back of mind as much as possible. I basically have no (or next to none cartilage) left in my right knee so don't even know what the next medical procedure is here. I previously had keyhole surgery where the remaining cartilage was stretched out, but I feel at certain times, I'm on borrowed time with this. I had a moment recently(month ago maybe) where I felt the knee was gone and couldn't put any weight on my leg. I was simply walking at the time and changed direction subtly. Its hard to describe but its immediately locked in a certain direction and I have to try and force an "air lock" crack. So, about 3 mins of lying down doing bicycle legs(delighted this wasn't in public) forced the massively relieving crack and it was perfectly fine again seconds later. I will seek some physio advice next time I am there, to hopefully put the mind at rest somewhat, because there is no way I'm stopping running as I have never been fitter or happier.

    Sunday - Hungover

    44.6miles for week

No real plan for the coming week, with the week thats in it. I'm working the Monday so might do a double runmute there. After that, whenever I can sneak a run in, I will, but doubt I will do a long one. Merry Christmas All.

    Monday 23rd - Double runmute
    AM 6.81 miles @8.49
PM 6.21 Miles @8.50 Nice run, although had a bag with me and was heavier then anticipated. Was on my way to a house party/gathering and along with a change of clothes and a towel, also had a bottle of wine in tow - anything goes this week
Tuesday 24th - 5.39 mile @7.19 progression run. Felt fresh enough weirdly after a rake of drink the previous two nights.First mile was faster then I wanted at 7.44 so knew I had to get to some fast paces here to progress ,finishing with last mile at 6.27. Enjoyed that one
Wednesday 25th - 3.5 Miles @8.39 Managed to sneak out for a half hour before dinner and festivities.
Thursday 26th - 5 Miles @8.30. Ran up towards Marlay park and was going to do the goal mile while I was there, but then realised forgot to bring cash, so I ran straight past Shane Ross about to start his mile in his formal gear

    Friday 27th - 7.11 Miles @8.06 - Moderate pace for 4 miles followed by 3 quicker miles
Saturday 28th - rest(well not really, spent the day minding/entertaining the kids while trying to fill a skip- neither completed successfully)
    Sunday 29th - 9.09 Miles @ 8.47

Total - 43.11 Miles for week

Impressive mileage for the week that's in it.

Did you make a decision on Cork yet?

Yes you read my mind, I took the plunge yesterday actually and did a basic draft of a plan that includes Grads base(which i'm kinda doing a variation of anyway) and the the grads intermediate marathon plan. My work/personal schedule will change later in January which will limit time periods when i can run, so i will need to be creative how I work out each training week(Double Runmutes to take in a couple of the 60 mins easy will prob have be a regular thing during that block)

Thanks Again for advice regarding plans

Very quick recap of last year as I haven't been a forumite for long
Signed up on July 1st for Dublin Marathon, then thought WTF am I doing, I had done hardly any running prior and what I did do was run as fast as I can for 30 mins on a rare occasion. I had no clue where to begin. Bought a Garmin which arrived on July 6th, where I started tracking runs and so the journey began. After a couple more weeks or so running like a lunatic with no structure, I fell upon the novice thread due to a friend who was using it. That changed my whole approach and now I had a plan to follow(big thanks to mentors and other contributors). Roll on 6 months and I have recorded just under 1'000 miles, PB'd at 5k, 10 km, completed my first half and first marathon. I think I may be hooked.

    Last week

    Mon Dec 30th - 6.72 miles(6 Progression) runmute
    9.25,8.48,8.21,7.49,7.27, 6.38
Very enjoyable morn run with unreal looking red sky at dawn
    Tues Dec 31st 6.73 miles @ 8.50 Runmute

    Wed 1st Jan - 6.71 Miles @8.17 Runmute
Drew short straw here and was working early on New years Day which to be honest, I don't mind at all. Unless I'm away, I am never too bothered about New Years Eve plus had done plenty of boozing in previous 2 weeks. I was in bed before midnight. In terms of the run, I don't really remember it at all. Splits all over the place, must have been away in my own world.
    Thurs 2nd Jan - 6.33 miles@8.27 including 10x100m stides
    Friday 3rd Jan - 9.10 Miles at 8.54
Up early for this one. i had plenty of these pre 6am runs in DCM training but less so recently. I actually love having the run done and dusted before breakfast where possible. Easy enough miles although took in plenty of tasty hills on the route I picked for this one.
    Saturday - Rest
    Sunday - 12 miles @8.01
Mixture of easy miles and 5 pacier miles which i was progressing with. I kind of made this one up as i went along. First mile was casual then 2nd mile upped pace close enough to half marathon pace i suppose. Followed up again wit easier mile then every 2nd mile up to 10 miles mark I would run a progressive faster pace which got to 6.28 pace followed by an easy mile. Finished up with 2 easy miles. Heart beat very consistent throughout.

    Total 47.6 miles for week

Raheny 5 mile in a few weeks is my next race. I would like to give this a good crack but I have never run a 5 mile race before. I want to include a few intervals coming up to include 5 mile pace but I'm unsure what that should be.
I'm aware of the motto train to your current fitness and my Jingle bells 5k was 18.31(avg pace 5.57), so I'm assuming i should be basing it off that. My last 10k run was back in early August which was 40.52 with average pace of (6.34). I think i should improve on that time if i was to run one today.(which reminds me i must sign up for a 10K)

For the more experienced than me ,Would 6.20 pace be accurate or conservative for 5 miles?

Why not start at 6:20, see how you feel at 3m/5k and push on if you feel good? You could build each of the last 2 miles to empty the tank.

I'd think you will probably come in with something in the 6:05-6:10 range but shotgunmcos's strategy is probably the best way to go about it.

You could try could try something like 7 x3 mins @ 6:10ish off 2 mins jog recovery this midweek and maybe 6x 4 mins next week.

Thanks for suggestion. Thats probably exactly what I will do and then aim closer to skyblue's estimated pace for last couple of miles if I have it in tank.I ran jingle bells with a similar tactic actually.

Enjoyed reading the 2 separate versions behind your 17+mile run yesterday . Fair play on your disciplined comeback to some high miles post injury.

Plenty of commuting with the runners this week

    Monday - 6.85 miles @8.49 (easy 60 mins)
    Tuesday - 6.75 miles @8.37 (easy 60 mins)
    Wednesday - 0.88 miles @9.36
    6.10 Miles @7.46 (7x 3 mins with 2min recovery avg 6.11)
After a helpful suggestion from Skyblue above, I went with this session with prep for Raheny in mind. Initially, I made a balls of the reps on the watch and had picked a previous workout that I only copped after warm up, hence the run spilt in 2 seperate runs. Anyway, idea was trying to hit 6.10 for 3 minutes. Reps were a bit inconsistent but was getting more the hang of it as they went along and ultimately felt happy enough after, as I was close enough to what I wanted.
    splits 6.16, 6.20, 6.13, 6.03, 6.12, 6.13,6.02
    Thursday - 7.01 Miles @8.48 (easy 60 Mins)
Friday - 7miles @8.24 Progression for 6 miles to MP
    9.06,8.55,8.34,8.11,7.52,7.23
    6.7 Miles @8.41
I had no intention of doing a double runmute that day and this actually changed my plan for weekend with me now taking a rest day on Saturday as opposed to Sunday. I was all set in my cycling gear, when I realised that the back tyre was completely flat. Must have been a slow puncture, as seemed find when I parked bike there previous day. Anyway, I was in no mood for getting my hands dirty to repair, so got into my running gear instead and rearranged the backpack to make it lighter and off I went casually enough.
    Saturday - Rest
Sunday - 12.01 Miles @8.18 which included 2miles at marathon pace followed by 2miles closer to half marathon pace. Other 8 miles surrounding these 4 were easy.

53.3 miles for week so my biggest mileage week since peak week for DCM training

    Monday - Runmute 6.83 Miles@8.33
Took it handy enough, pace increased as it went along without any extra effort due to elevation

    Tuesday 14th - Runmute 7miles @8.5
Sometimes these runmutes can get a bit boring for me taking the same route, so occasionally mix up the route on way home. I was tired after busy day in work and nearly bumped the run but glad i didn't. I went up the Grange Road Hill past St Endas park which is a proper climb to keep me honest. Nice bonus to this is there is a lovely downhill stretch then after to finish my run.

    Wednesday 15th - 6x4mins @ avg 6.06
As per skyblues advice from a couple of weeks ago, did the 2nd one of these prep sessions for Raheny 5 Miles. Was up and out the door by 6.15am. I need to run approx a mile(works out well for warm ups) to find a relatively flat area to complete these, as everything around me is generally very hilly. Plan was to hit 6.10 for 4 minute reps. I felt good all the way through this, certainly better then i felt doing the 7x3 version of this last week.
    Reps were
    6.08
    6.02
    6.11
    6.04
    6.05
    6.05
    Thursday Runmute 6.8 miles@8.45
Nothing of note here, manual imput due to battery not charged
    Friday Runmute 6.8 Miles@8.48
Same as above, although slight change in route to keep it interesting

    Saturday - 13.11 Miles @7.51
Bit pacier then I had planned. I was always going to throw in a few faster miles but ended up doing that along with faster recovery miles too. I was hoping to get out at 6am but due to a 1 year old up at 5am and refusing to go back to sleep, my plans had to be changed. I entertained her for a couple of hours to let my O/H get "some" sleep and got out shortly after 7. This left me with less time, as I was working at 9 so readjusted and made it a long runmute, but I still wanted to get 13 miles in so it meant it would be a bit faster to have time for shower etc. I nearly came a cropper early on just avoiding an ice patch so that kept me on guard for a while. I really enjoyed it and incorporated running on the beach on Sandymount strand which was very refreshing.
It also flew by listening to Stephen Scullions recent 2 podcasts in his prep for Houston Tomorrow. Would be nice to see him get that Olympic qualifying time. I don't often listen to music/podcasts on runs but due to been up so early ,needed the distraction this morn. Rest day tomorrow, so I'll say I will collapse in a heap on the couch later after the kids are in bed(beer in tow hopefully)

    47.9 miles in total

I plan to do a couple of runmutes Monday and Tuesday of this week but I'm uncertain of when I will get runs in after that, due to a busy week ahead for me. I need to be creative here or just simply get out super early which I like unless its too icy under foot. It will be a step down in mileage week anyway but probably not the worst time with a race next Sunday.

Nice session on Wed, i absolutely live for those sessions :)
And well done on the creativity of changing your planned Sat run at short notice, in a perfect world we would do it all planned perfectly but real life means making those changes, getting it done no matter what is the main thing ;) Enjoy those well deserved beers :D

My O/H was back working fulltime this week after maternity and extended parental leave.
Childcare had been all sorted until recently, our childminder had to pull out leaving us high and dry. Constantly on the lookout in recent weeks without success, has meant I am now taking some paternal/annual leave for a few days during the weeks to fill the void. Don't get me wrong, its great to get to spend the extra time with the kids especially when they are so young, but it will limit my opportunities to get out running on these days. I will basically need to plan my runs in advance and be prepared to suck it up when I cant get out at certain times. To ensure, I'm spending enough time pounding the pavements, I will start to increase how often I do the double commutes. I'm lucky in the sense my O/H is very supportive that I have found this new love in running.

    Anyway, week gone by

    Monday - Double Runmute
    6.79 Miles@8.38
    6.81 Miles@8.57

Tuesday - Cycled in, Ran home
    6.82 Miles @8.51

    Wednesday - Workout
    5.42 Miles@7.34
Found a window here where I could get out for approx 40 mins so up I trotted up to Marlay park. Wanted to do a bit of speed work with Raheny in mind. I did 5 x 2 mins reps. I wanted to be in about the 6min mark but the signs were good when the reps were as follows.
    5.35
    5.47
    5.42
    5.49
    5.45

    Thursday- Rest
No window to run here but suited in the end to rest

Friday - ran in , cycled home. 7.11 Miles @8.18
Back to work so decided to do a progression run on my way in starting at 8.51 pace and working myself down to optimistic Marathon pace 7.17. Enjoyable early morning run

    Saturday - 4.03 Miles @8.37 + double cycle commute
I hadn't received my Raheny bib by post so I got a dart up to Raheny Shamrocks from work to collect a replacement and ran the 4 miles plus change back to keep the legs ticking over. I always like having these things sorted in advance and didn't want to queue to get this sorted on the day of race.

    Sunday Raheny 5 mile Race.
Arrived there in good time in the end and managed to get the last spot in the church carpark. Took a bit of a breather then and just lay back in the car for ten minutes with the eyes closed and very nearly fell asleep. It was exactly what was needed at the time but blessed(maybe with church surroundings) I didn't actually fall asleep as would have been a messy one to explain, if I had missed the race.
Anyway, got myself together then and had a look at the landscape as I did a bit of a warmup up around St Annes Park. Chatting away to a former football teammate around the start approx half 2 and I copped peeps were starting to get into the pen so took the opportunity to hit a portaloo before doing the same. When I came back no more then a couple of minutes later the pen was really starting to fill up so I was a bit further back then I had envisaged but not to worry I was telling myself. I had no real target here but I felt with my training that If things went well I could get sub 31.
    Mile 1
Been a bit boxed in at the start in these shorter races seems to be a good thing for me, I have now learned from this and Jingle bells. Finding gaps and doing a few dance steps in the first half mile keeps your concentration solely on that and time is not worrying me here as I'm inadvertently pacing myself well and I now know I can make it up when the opportunity allows. Towards the end of the mile, I found my pace with mile clocking in at 6.19. A little outside where i wanted to be but content.
    Mile 2
I was now starting to find my rhythm without feeling like I was pushing it. I was making good ground and it didn't fell like I had just ran the 2nd mile in 5.58. Had a quick thought in my head that this is where I wanted to be to break 31 mins
    Mile 3
I had a brief look at the route beforehand and I knew it was flat enough but the 3rd mile brought a kinder elevation with the 4th been the hardest in terms of climbing. I still didn't push massively here as I knew if i could keep the same effort as 2nd mile, I should naturally be a bit quicker here, with also keeping a bit for mile 4. I was in turn a bit quicker by a tad when mile came in at 5.55
    Mile 4
I was racing now as we entered the park and was picking off runners. Effort increased as I was climbing the drag before the 180 degree u turn. Pace started to drop here a bit and I was definitely feeling it at this stage but kept telling myself "not long left now and look over there to your right at those ahead cruising , you too will have the slight hill in your favour in a minute" With my dodgy knee, I didn't want to take any risks so I took the uturn so wide, I was almost slow dancing with one of the race stewards. I immediately starting pushing now to get the pace back where i wanted and I saw the mile clock in to my surprise at 5.48 and I was almost on the button for 24 minutes for 4 Miles. Quick "arithmetic" in my head made it simple, "If you run a sub 6 mile you break 30 - leave nothing behind , you may never get a better chance here"
    Mile 5
With my new target now flashing before my eyes, I was now running (to steal someone elses quote from a previous race report) like I was chasing the bugger who just stole my wallet. I really enjoyed the route for the last mile and how the local crowds make it a bit special when you are going hell for leather around the final few bends before the sprint finish. As what seems to be always now, heard the encouraging shout out by skyblue here and I think i mustered some half arsed thumbs up back at him. A nice guide from him a couple of weeks ago of how to train for this race has definitely helped me and I'm thankful for that. Final mile clocked in as a PB mile for me in 5.36 with a closing sprint of 4.53 to record a time of 29.34 which was a hell of a lot better then I thought I would do. I was buzzing. and it turns out I ran a 5k in there of 17.56 which would be 35 seconds PB for me but duno if that really counts? Who cares, I'm enjoying the moment.

I loved to have stuck around a bit longer and met a few boardsies but parenthood has no bounds. Some great showings by many on here. I did manage to sneak out later in the night for a few celebratory pints of the black stuff back in the local which went down a treat.

Unfort, I missed out on getting a bib for Trim as i'd love to give that a crack this week but now I need to plan my runs ahead. I have signed up for the Great Ireland run and Cork marathon to see where I am on that front so marathon training is just around the corner for me now. I will look around for another 10k too i think in the meantime. I'm hoping Cork gives me a good idea of what I can target for DCM this year although I dont plan to leave anything behind me in Cork either. My last 2 miles in Dublin from last year where I got cramp haunts me a bit so I need to build up my endurance over the coming months. Thanks for reading.

Super stuff D, i am absolutely thrilled for you! That's a brilliant race & report :)

Falling asleep & missing the race would have easily topped any of the stupid things i have done ;)

Fair play juggling it all, it's defo not easy! Can't wait to see what else you can do :D

That's a super run and a great report. Hope the childcare issue gets sorted for you soon, must be stressful enough at times.
