Newbie alert! Since we lost the VM analogue channels the missus wants to get something in place for the kitchen. Looking at saorview connect as a possibility. We cannot get satellite due to large trees (it's been tried!) so only option is aerial (not even sure what type will work for us) and we already have decent broadband. So, how do I go about finding out the best options in terms of hardware etc. I see that the likes of DID have the boxes and aerial solutions, would these be good enough? Thanks.
AS you have decent broadband, saorview channels are available to stream live
No need to cut down any trees

So are there specific set top boxes that I need to get for Saorview streaming?

Are there free and legal Saorview streams?

Are there free and legal Saorview streams?

RTE player has RTE 1 (and plus 1), RTE 2 (and plus 1), RTE News Now & RTE Jr.
Virgin player has Virgin Media 1, 2 and 3.
    TG4 player has TG4
    Oireachtas also streams.

But probably not easy to use and some things will be blocked/etc.

Is there live tv on the rte player on the connect box ?

    Yes
You can obviously use a large tablet in the kitchen or a pc to a larger monitor and watch live channels on the rte player
An even better idea would be to use a sling box which is perfectly legal but of course you'd need a host house with good broadband also

The RTE player is the worst able piece of technology I've ever encountered. It's frustratingly bad. It is honestly never an alternative to always dependable terrestrial or satellite TV.

    Hi,

I bought a PowerPoint saorview connect box for my mother, and replaced her satellite at the same time, as it was literally falling to bits, in an effort to get her to get rid of Sky.

The satellite install was easy, the sky box says it has full signal strength, and just one notch down on signal quality from both tuners.

So I hooked up the saorview box and for the first few days it was going great, and I had all the expected channels, but today, the reception from the Sats in patchy, it says it has no signal, it freezes, crashes etc. It comes back intermittently though.

I called the tech support number (*1850 37 29 99‬), who were useless, and said it was the Satellite set up. (Mainly cos I’m not an approved installer - so of course it’s just my installation). But the sky box still works fine. No drop in signal.

So I suppose my question is... Even though it’s all from the same Astra2 satellite can the Sky signal just be stronger than the Freeview? (Seems unlikely you me).

And has anyone else had this problem?

It's a cluster of satellites, the signals come from 100+ transponders with different frequencies and polarities. The new sky ones have a much higher signal. You need to get your dish properly aligned

Hi, thanks for your quick reply. I’m aware it’s multiple satellites, I wasn’t aware that the sky signal was much stronger. I’ll have another look at the satellite but I’m not convinced it’s the problem.

(I should explain that I’m a geophysicist, and I’m not inexperienced when it comes to setting up satellites.) But this saorview connect box is giving me the sh*t’s!

Yes the UK sky channels are now a spot beam to cut off signal to lower Europe Spain etc. Someone with better knowledge than me might explain in more detail

If BBC One HD, for example, is fine on the Sky box but breaking up on the Connect box it would suggest that the dish is unlikely to be at fault.

    Hi Navi,

Yeah all the channels which are in common between Sky and Freesat, are fine from the sky box, but patchy from the saorview connect.

It could be possible that the tuner in the Sky box is better than the one in the Connect box so if the signal was marginal, due to poor alignment, it could be OK on the Sky box and breaking up on the other. There should be a signal meter in the Sky box. What does it say for various channels? Does the Connect box have a signal meter?

Also check the cable connections for the Connect box both at LNB and box.

According to the Sky box I have full Signal Strength, and just slightly less than full signal quality, the connect box doesn’t give you any indication of signal - other than when it’s says ‘ No signal’

I replaced all the coax and F connectors etc when installing the satellite, measured the resistance along the cable once the joins were in, (it preformed pretty good, and will be fine for sat cable). It’s defiantly making a connection to the LNB

I might go get a cheap and nasty Freesat box and see how it does before I go throw this saorview connect box through the window of Harvey Norman.

Have you tried connecting the Sky box to the satellite cable currently connected to the Connect box then checking signal levels and reception? That should rule out any connection or LNB port issues.

Yup, I sure have, and the sky box works perfectly and the saorview has issues.

I’ve even tried multiple old sky boxes that have been in the attic for like +10 years and they all work fine.

Sounds like you may have a faulty Connect box then. The Freesat box would be a better option in my opinion but it's unfortunate that it will cost you more money.

    @ Johnkid

Your mother didn't have SkyQ by any chance ? If she did, its a different LNB and wont work with Freesat/FTA Satellite unless its a hybrid LNB.

If not, Have you confirmed that the channels on the sky box is actually displaying picture (and not just signal bars). 19.2E has common transponder frequencies.

BBC/Ch4/Ch5 despite being on a narrow beam, boom in. There is no difference between the Sky encrypted Variations and the free to air equivalents on 28.2E

Update: I exchanged the saorview connect box today and it all works well now.

Thank you to everyone who helped, ye were far more helpful than that tech support guy!

If you're getting the sh-ts from the box you should get a doctor as well. I have never had that problem from the box. Lol

Sorry, still trying to figure this out :( Can you get a box that does pure Saorview streaming if for some reason can't (or don't want to) connect up an aerial or satellite. Thanks.

None specific that I am aware of, which is a shame.

I know Magnet have a service called AerTV, but it's not free (though I'm sure it used to be) so not the same.

Hi John Kid. Could you tell us what store/branch replaced the device for you? We want to check the box to see the fault and establish its cause.
    Thank You.

To answer my own question there's no live tv option on the RTE player on the connect box.

After the update I'm still having problems not detecting a wifi network when accessing on demand.
