    Fair play.
You’re brave but I think it may be a clever purchase. Look forward to hearing your comparisons to the golf.

Just the base model, the BIK on anything above that makes the whole thing a little less attractive. Haven't driven in one, just sat in it! It was a bit of an impulse decision, they announced 0% BIK until 2023 in the budget but also got rid of the €3800 grant for business customers. You had to have a vin assigned to you by October 22 and the car delivered by the end of the year to get this grant. I managed to get in just in time, only ordered the car about a month ago.

A friend of mine is doing the same, I think the 201 plate will be worth more for the sake of a few weeks. There's also improvements to the latest production model 3's.

To be honest I don't really. The demand for good EVs way outstrips the supply, that will translate down to the demand for good used EVs in three years time. I can't see 192 vs 201 being worth that much. But suits me if it does, might make selling the car to myself when BIK goes back up an option.

Anyway that's enough about Tesla. This is the golf thread, back to discussing your filthy CO2 spewing machines.

That was one option I had been thinking about over the summer, i.e. swapping the Golf for a Model 3. Ultimately I decided against it though.

I have driven both the standard Model 3 and the performance edition (both of them as rentals from turo.com, in the States). The standard model was nice, lovely interior and build quality and of course the tech is brilliant. However I just didn't enjoy driving it as much as the Golf. It didn't feel as fast off the line, the handling was a bit woolly on twisty bits, braking was only ok and you can really feel the weight in the car. Overall it just doesn't feel as nimble as the Golf.

The performance model was a different story - much better handling (bigger wheels? and different tires), brakes were incredible and much much faster off the line. A total hoot to drive, at least in terms of the G forces!

Reasons I decided not to change to the Model 3 ...

It's the performance edition I'd want - but the price in Ireland was going to be north of 70k

The giant touchscreen, although great at first, would annoy me a bit. I still prefer physical buttons for at least *some* stuff. Although the way things are going in most cars now, I might not have a choice for much longer...

The performance, while it is amazing, just feels a bit soulless? Lack of engine noise, sweeping rev counter when you floor it, etc. Can't criticise the Model 3 for that, it's the nature of it. But maybe I'm not ready for that yet.

Last but not least, I'd miss the ability to just take off on a road trip (e.g. a 4000km European road trip like I did a while back) without having to worry about charging points. And if you were on said road trip with a few petrol heads, how would you arrange overnight stops if you were the only one in the group who cared about electricity?

So overall the above probably says more about me than the Model 3 vs Golf but those were my factors anyhow.

Anyone with 19 inch alloys on their Golf have any issues? Harsh ride, constant punctures etc. I’m running 18 inch at the moment and considering getting a set of 19’s. Would there be much difference in terms of ride quality between the two?

Currently running genuine GTE alloys with Michilan PS4 225/40/18. Going to change to Replica Spielbergs with Pirreli P Zero’s 235/35/19.

I know in theory a smaller side wall = harsher ride but does anyone have real world use of 19’s on their Golf or an experience of swapping 18’s for 19’s? Most garages are fitting Spielbergs to standard golfs nowadays so I reckon their decent quality reps. Any advice taken thanks

    ....

I have Pirreli P Zero’s 235/35/19 on my 7R. Seems like a fairly OK ride to be honest. Speed bumps and Secondary roads can be Harsh (but that’s more suspension than tyres). national routes and Motorway is definitely fine (for me)

Never had a puncture. But always keep good thread on them.

Does anyone know if you have a suspected puncture and call VW roadside assistance what will they do? Repair or just patch it?

Anyone know anything about the black R in Divanes in Castleisland? https://www.divane.ie/en/used-cars/40500

Showroom model, but what's the spec like?

They'll fit the spare if you have one or use the inflators kit.

They shouldn't repair the tyre, if the spare or the inflators kit wont work they'll tow you.

The MK8 is confirmed for 2020. Pricing hasn't been. Seems like a lot of money to drop on a late reg when there's a new one around the corner.

Spec wise it doesn't have keyless go and keyless entry which should be standard on a 50k car. The audio system and alloys are upgrades that's about all rest in standard.

Yes, pricing is a bit off, I agree. According to the donedeal ad, it has both keyless entry and go so may just be an omission on their own ad.

    M2 it is! :pac:

No it's got an ignition barrel in the photos, so you need to put the key in the ignition.

Real shame it isn't standard at that price. €400 is very little extra on a car that much. I wonder do people fob it off because they haven't experienced it before or they genuinely don't want to spend €400 for convenience?

    You definitely get you

Hate seeing a GTI or R well specced with leather, upgraded infotainment or sunroof and skimp on the keyless.

Had to fumble a coffee machine and a few bags when driving my mam's car while mine was getting serviced, that's where I'd casually lean into the handle to lock it. Not that time...

How would their assistance compare to regular breakdown assistance? Same thing I'd imagine, local tow company sent out to assist?

They came out and patched it up. Ended up being a screw that was the cause of it.

In my case today, based in South Dublin, it was VW's own breakdown team. From the time I called to the time he got to me was only 43 minutes, pretty impressive. The mechanic was telling me that they have 2 vans that cover Dublin, one South and one North, and they look after VW, Audi, Skoda and Seat.

Have to say I went from a mk7 with keyless to a mk7.5 without it and dont miss it at all. Actually it makes finding my house key easier when I get home ( not rummaging around all my pockets looking for it)

It's reasonable imo. It's generally sub contracted through the AA or Allianz Assist or local companys down the country. It's 24/7 365, the biggest difference between them and an AA policy is that the VW Assist policy is on the car not the driver. The sub contractors were advised to stay away from puncture repairs for liability reasons so it's interesting to hear one got patched, or that they even had tyre removal equipment in the van.

You're covered for a ridiculous amount of things that most people aren't aware of like 3 days hire car if yours has to be towed away or cost of alternative transport to your destination, hotel costs, even repatriation of pets etc if you break down abroad with Fido. The cover also stays with the car for life, "FOC" once you keep it serviced in the dealer network.

Can’t stand having house keys on my car key, noting attached to mine what so ever.

Having driven rentals etc with keyless I think it’s brilliant and would love it on my own car. So many times trying to open the car with no free hand etc.

If I don’t attach the house keys to the car keys I’ll loose both or lock myself out of one :)

The big reason for not getting keyless cars is security. They are a lot easier to steal with the keyless option.

    .......

Keyless on a GTi makes it easier to steal. Folk don't like that. Needing the key has it's pitfalls too if someone decides they want your car.... House break in etc

I’m the exact same. I would never go back from keyless.

PS. Use Tile with your keys. It’s a lifesaver.

I wouldn't be too worried, all you have to do is store it in a safe container. Wouldn't put me off getting keyless. My neighbor has a higher chance of having the cat stolen off his Prius than I would having a gang roll up with a laptop trying to clone a key.

If they want your car they'll get it one way or the other, keyless or not.
