Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

A new Sweet Beat venture...Sweet As. Diner And Deli coming June..not sure of the premises.

What exactly does a vegetable based, vegan friendly deli sell? When I think of a deli it is meat, meat and more meat.

Looks like soups, veggie burgers, grain based salads, pasta dishes, beany stews and some nice looking cakes - I'm dairy free (though not veggie or vegan) so I'm planning to visit next time I'm in Sligo. Nice to have a non meat based meal at least once a day imo.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the food in Sweet Beat, particularly the beans on toast, I just always associated a deli with the American type deli. I think it’s great though. Kinda cutting out meat myself so it’s great to have a place that has a variety of nice dishes without meat. Too many restaurants only offer one veggie option, pasta or veggie burger.

Is Sweet Beat purely a vegan restaurant? It says on their page they are vegan friendly. That sounds like they cater for vegan customers but not necessarily solely vegan. I could be wrong though!

Maybe it means that they are friendly to vegans.

I'd say it's mostly vegan, with a few vegetarian concessions. You won't get any meat but you can get dairy milk in your coffee, they might have some egg/cheese dishes but I've never noticed any.

Looks like the old Heatons will reopen as Sports Direct only. That’s what the new signage seems to suggest. No mention of Brandmax.

Signage up in Sweet As in the old Molly's and their Facebook page is active, they are opening soon but don't see a date.

Also spotted workmen removing the old sign and putting in a new one on the tiny old Bookies beside Michael Quirke's on Wine Street. Seems to be work going on inside too.

Would make the perfect location for a cafe I reckon :pac:

I saw people eating in there today. My daughter tells me they've been open since thursday or Friday.

I heard about that nearly 2 years ago and even then it seemed like a done deal and was happening soon. Hadn't heard anything since and assumed it was bullshít. Can't believe it's taken this long.

Possibly waiting for the leases of Currys and Castle Davitt to run out. It's the only reason I can think for it.

yes true - they have a bit of re-organising to do .. I wonder what units Currys and Castle Davitt will move into then - anyone want to speculate ? - or even know?

I believe Castle Davitt moving beside Harry Corry and Curry's/PC World moving beside Homestore+More.

Blimey, Harvey Norman and Curry's be right near to each other on that side of the retail park? , I'd like to see how that would work out!

They're in the same park as each other in lots of places (Swords, Carrickmines, Naas, Waterford. The stores in Tralee are literally looking at each other. )

Danish retailer JYSK has ramped up its Irish plans - but it's battling with lease time lags https://jrnl.ie/4785710 . Near the end of article mentions Sligo

I see Golden Discs are advertising for sales assistants and store manager roles for a new store in Sligo.

Anyone know where this is going?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,293 ✭✭✭✭Mint Sauce

Have the To Let signs gone from the former Veritas Store across from the Cathedral? Noticed the windows are now white washed, clouded over. Is there something going in?

Whilst was only ever in it a few times, I really hope it's a new religious shop. Seems strange not seeing one there, also to piss off the haters.

Not opening/reopening but Atlantic lock and key on Castle Street are moving to beside Alfie's (barbers) on Thomas Street, notice up in their window. I guess it's to the tech/phone shop that is vacant.

Where did you see the jobs advertised? It’s probably only a pop up Xmas store!

They've left out the requirements in that job for the compulsory bleached hair, tatoos, beards and piercings.

Probably the old Aware unit on OCS

That would be a great spot for it. Can't imagine a cd/loot shop bringing in enough money to pay off rent for a property there though. Hope I'm wrong. Ideal location.

I’d say it’ll be just a pop up Xmas store, gone again in January. Hope it will stay but rent/rates v sales, it might be untenable!

The units in Johnson Court are more likely the size that they would be looking for. No real market for shops like that anymore, with Netflix, Spotify, etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,840 ✭✭✭✭Andy From Sligo

yep, HMV and zavii in johnsone court couldnt compete to the internet music and film download content and then xtravision .. really surprised GD has kept its head above water for this long TBH

Was in the one in Cork recently which was packed..

.. some people just prefer physical media, especially in how cheap it's gotten (thanks to digital services like you've mentioned). Plus vinyl is selling better than ever.

Saw it today. J&J moved to the next (smaller) unit down and there were guys doing up their old unit so that’s pretty much case closed.

Jack Jones and Chloes were owned by same group. Both being put into one store, kids and adults together.

just listening on the ocean fm there and said golden discs have been doing very well lately which prompted them to open up a sligo store - so i suppose permenant , only time will tell. i wish them sucess, i wish all new businesses starting up in sligo success .

Only thing is , I would have thought the Record room on Castle St. would have had all that covered what GD do , and have been in Sligo for years.

They're no good, I ordered a cd from there a few weeks back,on a Tuesday! He said its in stock in Dublin and would be there by the weekend and that he would text me! Still waiting for that text 3 weeks later!
That's why I am glad an Irish company like Golden Discs are opening as opposed to failures like Virgin/Zavvi and HMV. Golden Discs will carry the stock and have an online presence!

I'm surprised they are not opening today as Friday is traditionally the day of new releases!
