Now that Mugabe is in the news, it got me thinking.. He wasn't the worst, was he?

You had Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao and Genghis Kahn. I'm not even sure he was the worst living dictator seeing as Kim Jon Un is still alive. Moot point now.

So who is the most evil dictator - living or dead - and why?

Sounds like the quality over quantity of the evil exhibited by some of the competition.

Franco, absolutely ruthless, Hitler had a meeting with him and said afterwards that he never wanted to speak with that lunatic again.

Absolute nonsense. Franco is not even close to being the worst.

Mao or Stalin I think. Hitler is obviously up there.

Pure evil that guy. Ground his statues into dust.

Touch a nerve? Did a family member go over and fight for him? He obviously wasn't as bad as Hitler but he's definitely up there.

Mao if you’re to go by the number of people who died because of his egotistical idea for how Chinese society should work. He also showed all the classic signs of being a psychopath, which you’d presume all dictators are.

But you said he was the worst.

Fun fact - the major exit countries for Jews fleeing Europe was via fascist Spain and Salazar’s Portugal.

    Salazar’s Portugal.

Wasn’t that the undead pirate hunter in the last Pirates of the Caribbean franchise?

Do we measure by gratuitous cruelty or sheer numbers?

As a % of the global population Kublai Khan is probably the winner.

Um no. You are just incorrect. France and America were responsible for far more heinous crimes throughout the world during Franco's reign than Franco was.

Fun Fact: Franco was the only Western leader that Fidel Castro had any respect for, as he was the only one prepared to ignore the CIA blockade of Cuba.

Hitler; people shouldn't conflate failed policies with murderous policies.

Well, as long as Castro liked him. That's all that matters.

This is true. The democracies certainly have killed more people in the 20C than most dictatorships. Vietnam alone was about 3M.

Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot. Three of the worst most brutal dictators of the modern age.

Probably wins for killing the greatest % of a countries population from within.

Are you thinking of Genghis rather then Kublai?

    No they didn't.

USSR, Hitler, China. How many people killed? Against democracies? Not a hope. Unless you are going to consider WW2 the democracies fault?

Think you will find the Chinese and Soviets also had a part to play. That said, America had no business in that country and did carry out many atrocities.

True. Same could be said about Soviet Union in Afghanistan in the 1980s as well.
