‘Magnum P.I.’ Reboot in Development at CBS From Peter Lenkov With Production Commitment

“Magnum P.I.” is getting the reboot treatment at CBS, Variety has learned.

Peter Lenkov, the writer and producer behind current CBS reboots of “Hawaii Five-O” and “MacGyver,” will serve as the writer and executive producer on a new version of the classic 1980s series, which has a pilot production commitment at the network.

Described as an updated version of the original series, “Magnum P.I.” follows Thomas Magnum, a decorated ex-Navy SEAL who, upon returning home to Hawaii from Afghanistan, repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator. With help from fellow vets Theodore “TC” Calvin and Orville “Rick” Wright, as well as that of disavowed former MI:6 agent Juliet Higgins, Magnum takes on the cases no one else will, helping those who have no one else to turn to. Tom Selleck played the mustachioed Magnum in the original series.

So that will be reboots of Five 0, MacGyver and Magnum PI all on CBS. And since they like having their shows in the same universe with Five 0, MacGyver and the NCIS series all crossing over in some way or the other, will that mean Magnum is always just going to be in a different part of Hawaii than Steve and co? I assume there'll be crossing over there as well

Apparently the original had crossovers with Simon and Simon and with Murder She Wrote!

    Bad Boys Spinoff.

‘Bad Boys’ Spinoff TV Series Starring Gabrielle Union In the Works

EXCLUSIVE: The Bad Boys hit movie franchise is getting a spinoff TV series centered on the character played in the second film by Gabrielle Union.
No one would comment but I hear the untitled project, which is currently being pitched to TV networks, already has garnered strong interest from multiple places and is expected to land a major commitment. It hails from the Bad Boys movies’ producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Doug Belgrad via his 2.0 Entertainment and Primary Wave Entertainment. Sony Pictures TV Studios, whose movie sibling is behind the feature franchise, is the studio.

The untitled Bad Boys spinoff is being written by The Blacklist writers-producers Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier. Union’s Special Agent Sydney “Syd” Burnett, introduced in the sequel Bad Boys II, is the sister of Detective Lieutenant Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) who was romantically involved with Marcus’ partner, Detective Lieutenant Mike Lowrey (Will Smith). She is an undercover operative with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). You can watch a trailer for Bad Boys II below.

Union just became available as BET announced that her popular series Being Mary Jane will end with next year a two-hour series finale movie.

I hear the idea for a Bad Boys offshoot centered around Union’s character came from Primary Wave Entertainment, which manages the actress, in the company’s first broadcast development season since it brought in former NBC Universal TV Entertainment chairman Jeff Gaspin as President. He executive produces the project alongside Union’s manager Jeff Morrone.

Also executive producing the potential series are Belgrad and Jerry Bruckheimer TV’s Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman and KristieAnne Reed.

    Invisible Man

Hulu is developing a series adaptation of the novel “Invisible Man” by Ralph Ellison.
Variety has learned that the project is in very early development stages, and that no script has yet been written. Hulu earlier this year acquired the rights to develop a series based on the landmark 1952 novel, which is owned by the Ralph and Fanny Ellison Charitable Trust. John Callahan is serving as an executive producer on the project.

Winner of the National Book Award in 1953, “Invisible Man” is considered a classic of 20th century American literature. The novel is told from the perspective of an unnamed African-American narrator who considers himself to be socially invisible due to the color of his skin. The narrator recalls stories from his life — first growing up and attending college in the South, then migrating to and living in New York City.

    Blair Witch

Blair Witch TV series in development by original film director
The Blair Witch returned last year as director Adam Wingard unleashed his surprise sequel, and now we have word that Eduardo Sanchez, co-director of the original The Blair Witch Project, is developing a follow-up to the classic found footage horror in the form of a TV series.

“For us, it’s a very natural thing to go and say “Hey, let’s do a frickin’ Blair Witch show and you can say it’s from the original creators and we can bring in a whole bunch of interesting directors to direct episodes,” said Sanchez on the Diminishing Returns podcast, before being asked whether it would be an anthology series with prequel episodes, or all found footage episodes. “I can’t really discuss [it]. I think that the idea of a Blair Witch anthology has always been very – just a really interesting thing. You’re close. You’re in the ballpark. You know, and I think it might be one of those things that might be – you know? The more you think about it, you’re like ‘That might be the perfect… a TV show. You know?’ So, we’ll see what happens, but I think that’s the next big thing for Blair Witch. Probably TV.”

Sanchez goes on to reveal that Lionsgate hold the rights to the franchise, and that ultimately any decision on a series rests with them.

    Accused

David Shore, whose adaptation of an award-winning South Korean format became the breakout new series of the season, ABC’s The Good Doctor, has teamed with Paramount Network to develop Accused, based on the International Emmy-winning British series.

Originally created by Jimmy McGovern, the series debuted in 2010 on BBC One and ran for two seasons. The first season won International Emmys for best drama series and best actor, Chris Eccleston. Season 2 won an International Emmy award for best actor, Sean Bean, and BAFTA TV Award for best supporting actress, Olivia Colman.

Accused is an anthology series in which each stand-alone episode follows a different character as they make their way to court to hear whether they’ve been found guilty of a crime. As we approach the verdict, their backstories, personal journeys, and the events that led up to them being accused of the crime play out and leave the viewers questioning whether each of the people is really guilty or not.

Paramount Network launches January 18, 2018. Replacing Spike TV, it has been designated to become the leading scripted brand for the revamped Viacom cable group.

    Fire and Fury

‘Fire and Fury’ to Be Adapted Into TV Series
Michael Wolff’s “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House” is being eyed for an adaptation into a television series, Variety has confirmed.

Endeavor Content has purchased the film and television rights to the book, which goes inside the first year of Donald Trump’s presidency. It largely portrays Trump as unprepared for the enormity of his office, and that he is unable to focus his attention on policy details. The book also includes quotes from former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, who referred to the 2016 meeting between Donald Trump Jr. and a Russian lawyer as “treasonous.” Bannon eventually resigned his position at Breitbart News over the furor caused by his statements.

The book proved to be an immediate best-seller and was sold out at bookstores in several major cities the day it was released.

The series centers on Jimmy, a young boy disillusioned with the all-powerful corporations who rule civilization, whose best friend will develop the drug that wipes out humanity; Toby and Ren, two members of the cult “God’s Gardeners” who fight to survive on the margins of society; and Zeb, one of the founders of “God’s Gardeners.”

Maddaddam will be produced through the first look deal that Paramount TV and Anonymous Content recently signed with Rock Paper Scissors, which includes both scripted and unscripted content.

“I am very happy with the vision described to me by Angus, Kent, David, Bard and Amy, as well as the stunning visual presentation they put together. I very much look forward to working with them,” said Atwood.

Anonymous Content’s Dorros and Kanter jointly said, “We’re thrilled to be bringing MaddAddam Trilogy to television. The worlds of Oryx & Crake, The Year of the Flood and MadAddam beautifully illustrate the extraordinary range of Margaret Atwood’s imagination and go deeply afield in time and global evolution presenting fascinating opportunities to dramatize the wildest vision of the future ever shown on television. We’re excited to be embarking on this wonderful journey together with Angus Wall, our friends at Rock Paper Scissors and our partners at Paramount Television.”

    Conan The Barbarian

Amazon is developing a Conan The Barbarian TV series
Everyone's favourite Cimmerian has been absent from screens since 2011, when Jason Momoa starred in a Conan The Barbarian reboot, which failed to get a new franchise of the ground. You have to go back to 1984, with Conan The Destroyer, the sadly inferior sequel to John Milius' masterful 1982 film, Conan The Barbarian, for more sword swinging action, and Arnold Schwarzenegger spent the next 30 years or so dropping hints that he'd complete the trilogy with King Conan one day.

Needless to say, King Conan continues to stall, and it doesn't look like it's going to happen. Especially now that Amazon is developing a new series, under the simple title of Conan, which will trace the character's origin from wandering barbarian to king of the realm. Conan has some impressive talent working for it, Ryan Condal (Colony), Miguel Sapochnik (known for directing episodes of Game Of Thrones), and Warren Littlefield (who has worked on prestige dramas like The Handmaid's Tale and Fargo) are producing with Pathfinder Media and Endeavor Content.

    Astro City

‘Astro City’ TV Series Based On Comics In Works At FremantleMedia North America
American Gods producer FremantleMedia North America has acquired the rights to Astro City superhero comic book series to develop as a live-action TV drama series.

The Astro City comics, created by writer Kurt Busiek and artists Brent Anderson and Alex Ross, spans 16 (and counting) standalone yet loosely-connected story arcs containing more than 2,000 original characters. It is claimed to be the last, fully fleshed out superhero universe in the English language comic book business that has not been exploited for the screen. Astro City made its debut in 1995 with Image Comics and is currently published by DC Comics.

Despite the fact that the comic books’ current publisher, DC Comics, is owned by Warner Bros., Busiek owns all of the rights to Astro City, which he will now exploit in TV with FMNA.

The fictional Astro City universe explores the lives of ordinary people and those of the all-too-human superhumans in their midst, and their collective, daily struggle to hold on to hope in the face of world-shaking, life-altering events beyond any single individual’s control.

A mid-sized American city blessed with, and cursed by, the largest number of superheroes and supervillains in one place on Earth, Astro City is described as a unique brand of humanistic saga — part superhero epic, part intimate drama — in which the (mostly) good hearted, workaday residents of the eponymous locale come into daily contact with the worrisome, the weird and the wondrous.

    Walking Dead Spinoff

New ‘Walking Dead’ Spinoff In The Works, AMC Executives Confirm
A new spinoff of The Walking Dead is in the works, AMC Networks confirmed during its quarterly earnings call with Wall Street analysts.

Asked to elaborate on CEO Josh Sapan’s mention of a third zombie outing, COO Ed Carroll said the spinoff is in “active development.” He declined to offer many more specifics, including whether it would fall under an existing distribution agreement with Hulu.

“We’re not at a stage where we’ll be announcing its plans to premiere,” Carroll said. “But we have hired creative people that have pitched story outlines. We feel very good about the development of that series. We’re not in a position to talk about partnerships in terms of other territories or ancillary windows, other than that there’s a healthy appetite for it and we’ve had a number of conversations with a lot of players in the space.”

A new TWD series comes as the mother-ship show has seen a slew of departures such as Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohan and series-low ratings in its ninth season. Additionally, as more crossovers are in the works with spinoff Fear the Walking Dead, Lincoln is set for a series of TWD movies and Black Panther star Danai Gurira will be easing down her TWD presence in the show’s upcoming 10th season.

Carroll asserted that the inevitable fade of the original show should not obscure its status as the No. 1 series on cable and the No. 2 drama on TV behind NBC’s This is Us.

“We are well aware that when a show has been around for nine years, you would expect viewership to be declining, but I think we’ve managed that and managed that well,” Carroll said. “When The Walking Dead is no longer part of the channel, I think that will have more of an impact on revenue than on [income] because generally expenses go up as the seasons continue and viewership declines. That’s just a general pattern with any show that’s been around as long as The Walking Dead has.”

The company’s fourth-quarter results beat Wall Street estimates, with adjusted earnings per share of $1.92 clearing the bar by 8 cents and revenue of $773 million coming in more than $15 million above analyst expectations.

The series will be executive produced by Zaillian, Garrett Basch, Philipp Keel, Ben Forkner, Levy and Entertainment 360’s Guymon Casady.
