Jim Carrey is re-teaming with Oscar-winning director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) for a new Showtime half-hour comedy series titled Kidding.

Here’s the pitch: “Carrey plays Jeff, aka Mr. Pickles, an icon of children’s television, a beacon of kindness and wisdom to America’s impressionable young minds and the parents who grew up with him – who also anchors a multimillion dollar branding empire. But when this beloved personality’s family – wife, two sons, sister, and father – begins to implode, Jeff finds no fairy tale or fable or puppet will guide him through this crisis, which advances faster than his means to cope. The result: a kind man in a cruel world faces a slow leak of sanity as hilarious as it is heartbreaking.”

‘Game of Thrones’: Fifth Prequel Series in Development at HBO
A fifth “Game of Thrones” prequel series is officially in the works at HBO, Variety has confirmed.

Bryan Cogman, who has worked on “Game of Thrones” since Season 1, has been tapped to pen a potential fifth prequel project for the network. It was previously known that four prequels were in development, though George R.R. Martin said that a fifth was also in the works. When Martin first spoke of the fifth writer being recruited in May, he said that apart from himself and “Thrones” experts Elio Garcia and Linda Antonsson, “I don’t know anyone who knows and loves Westeros as well as he does.”

Cogman has worked on the show in various capacities over the years, most recently as a writer and co-executive producer. Among the episodes Cogman has written for the series are “Stormborn,” the second episode of Season 7, and “The Broken Man, the seventh episode of Season 6 which introduced the character of Lyanna Mormont.

The four writers previously announced are Max Borenstein (“Kong: Skull Island”), Jane Goldman (“Kingsman: The Golden Circle”), Brian Helgeland (“Legend”), and Carly Wray (“Mad Men,” “The Leftovers”).

Details for the five projects are being kept under tight guard, though Martin has made clear that each project is a prequel rather than a spinoff and that none of the current main cast of the series will be involved. He has also ruled out fan theories that any of them will focus on his characters Ser Duncan the Tall and Aegon the Unlikely, or Dunk and Egg as they are popularly known. He has also said that Robert’s Rebellion will not be the subject of any of the prequels.

    Munich

FremantleMedia To Adapt Robert Harris’ ‘Munich’ As UK/German Series
From features to TV projects, World War II is a big focus for creatives this season, and particularly as we head into Mipcom. To wit: FremantleMedia’s Euston Films and UFA Fiction are set to co-produce the adaptation of Robert Harris’ latest novel, Munich. The spy thriller will be filmed in the UK and Germany. It’s a story about treason and conscience, loyalty and betrayal, and is filled with real-life characters — Hitler, Chamberlain, Mussolini, Daladier — and events that changed history.

Best-selling novelist Harris has visited WWII before and this time he fronts the story with an Englishman and a German struggling against the Nazis. As Chamberlain’s plane judders over the Channel and Hitler’s train steams relentlessly south from Berlin, two young men travel with secrets of their own. Hugh Legat is one of Chamberlain’s private secretaries and Paul Hartmann is a German diplomat and member of the anti-Hitler resistance. Great friends at Oxford before Hitler came to power, they haven’t seen one another since they were last in Munich six years earlier. Now, as the future of Europe hangs in the balance, their paths are destined to cross again.

‘Magnum P.I.’ Reboot in Development at CBS From Peter Lenkov With Production Commitment

“Magnum P.I.” is getting the reboot treatment at CBS, Variety has learned.

Peter Lenkov, the writer and producer behind current CBS reboots of “Hawaii Five-O” and “MacGyver,” will serve as the writer and executive producer on a new version of the classic 1980s series, which has a pilot production commitment at the network.

Described as an updated version of the original series, “Magnum P.I.” follows Thomas Magnum, a decorated ex-Navy SEAL who, upon returning home to Hawaii from Afghanistan, repurposes his military skills to become a private investigator. With help from fellow vets Theodore “TC” Calvin and Orville “Rick” Wright, as well as that of disavowed former MI:6 agent Juliet Higgins, Magnum takes on the cases no one else will, helping those who have no one else to turn to. Tom Selleck played the mustachioed Magnum in the original series.

So that will be reboots of Five 0, MacGyver and Magnum PI all on CBS. And since they like having their shows in the same universe with Five 0, MacGyver and the NCIS series all crossing over in some way or the other, will that mean Magnum is always just going to be in a different part of Hawaii than Steve and co? I assume there'll be crossing over there as well

    Bad Boys Spinoff.

‘Bad Boys’ Spinoff TV Series Starring Gabrielle Union In the Works

EXCLUSIVE: The Bad Boys hit movie franchise is getting a spinoff TV series centered on the character played in the second film by Gabrielle Union.
No one would comment but I hear the untitled project, which is currently being pitched to TV networks, already has garnered strong interest from multiple places and is expected to land a major commitment. It hails from the Bad Boys movies’ producer Jerry Bruckheimer, Doug Belgrad via his 2.0 Entertainment and Primary Wave Entertainment. Sony Pictures TV Studios, whose movie sibling is behind the feature franchise, is the studio.

The untitled Bad Boys spinoff is being written by The Blacklist writers-producers Brandon Margolis and Brandon Sonnier. Union’s Special Agent Sydney “Syd” Burnett, introduced in the sequel Bad Boys II, is the sister of Detective Lieutenant Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) who was romantically involved with Marcus’ partner, Detective Lieutenant Mike Lowrey (Will Smith). She is an undercover operative with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). You can watch a trailer for Bad Boys II below.

Union just became available as BET announced that her popular series Being Mary Jane will end with next year a two-hour series finale movie.

I hear the idea for a Bad Boys offshoot centered around Union’s character came from Primary Wave Entertainment, which manages the actress, in the company’s first broadcast development season since it brought in former NBC Universal TV Entertainment chairman Jeff Gaspin as President. He executive produces the project alongside Union’s manager Jeff Morrone.

Also executive producing the potential series are Belgrad and Jerry Bruckheimer TV’s Bruckheimer, Jonathan Littman and KristieAnne Reed.

    Invisible Man

Hulu is developing a series adaptation of the novel “Invisible Man” by Ralph Ellison.
Variety has learned that the project is in very early development stages, and that no script has yet been written. Hulu earlier this year acquired the rights to develop a series based on the landmark 1952 novel, which is owned by the Ralph and Fanny Ellison Charitable Trust. John Callahan is serving as an executive producer on the project.

Winner of the National Book Award in 1953, “Invisible Man” is considered a classic of 20th century American literature. The novel is told from the perspective of an unnamed African-American narrator who considers himself to be socially invisible due to the color of his skin. The narrator recalls stories from his life — first growing up and attending college in the South, then migrating to and living in New York City.

    Blair Witch

Blair Witch TV series in development by original film director
The Blair Witch returned last year as director Adam Wingard unleashed his surprise sequel, and now we have word that Eduardo Sanchez, co-director of the original The Blair Witch Project, is developing a follow-up to the classic found footage horror in the form of a TV series.

“For us, it’s a very natural thing to go and say “Hey, let’s do a frickin’ Blair Witch show and you can say it’s from the original creators and we can bring in a whole bunch of interesting directors to direct episodes,” said Sanchez on the Diminishing Returns podcast, before being asked whether it would be an anthology series with prequel episodes, or all found footage episodes. “I can’t really discuss [it]. I think that the idea of a Blair Witch anthology has always been very – just a really interesting thing. You’re close. You’re in the ballpark. You know, and I think it might be one of those things that might be – you know? The more you think about it, you’re like ‘That might be the perfect… a TV show. You know?’ So, we’ll see what happens, but I think that’s the next big thing for Blair Witch. Probably TV.”

Sanchez goes on to reveal that Lionsgate hold the rights to the franchise, and that ultimately any decision on a series rests with them.

    Accused

David Shore, whose adaptation of an award-winning South Korean format became the breakout new series of the season, ABC’s The Good Doctor, has teamed with Paramount Network to develop Accused, based on the International Emmy-winning British series.

Originally created by Jimmy McGovern, the series debuted in 2010 on BBC One and ran for two seasons. The first season won International Emmys for best drama series and best actor, Chris Eccleston. Season 2 won an International Emmy award for best actor, Sean Bean, and BAFTA TV Award for best supporting actress, Olivia Colman.

Accused is an anthology series in which each stand-alone episode follows a different character as they make their way to court to hear whether they’ve been found guilty of a crime. As we approach the verdict, their backstories, personal journeys, and the events that led up to them being accused of the crime play out and leave the viewers questioning whether each of the people is really guilty or not.

Paramount Network launches January 18, 2018. Replacing Spike TV, it has been designated to become the leading scripted brand for the revamped Viacom cable group.
