Alan Ball has hit the mother lode, tapping Oscar winner Holly Hunter to play the matriarch in his new tragicomic family drama for HBO.
The Six Feet Under and True Blood boss’ untitled series focuses on the contemporary multi-racial Black-Bishop family: a philosophy professor, his lawyer wife (Hunter), their three adopted children from Somalia, Vietnam and Colombia, and their sole biological child. This seemingly perfect, progressive family is in actuality harboring deep rifts. Then, one of the children begins to see things others cannot. Is it mental illness? Or something else?
Hunter’s matriarch character, socially conscious idealist Audrey Black, decided — along with husband Greg — to build a family by adopting children from Vietnam, Somali and Colombia before having their own child in their forties. Once a therapist in private practice, she now reluctantly utilizes her skills as a psychologist in the corporate world, balancing her more progressive personal philosophy with the need to make money. Audrey is a smart, caring woman who believes she knows what’s best for everyone and has no problem telling them. But with her husband now fighting depression and her children mostly grown, she finds herself somewhat adrift.

    Vampire Chronicles

Anne Rice Developing 'Vampire Chronicles' TV Series

    http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/anne-rice-bring-vampire-chronicles-tv-950550

Anne Rice’s ‘Vampire Chronicles’ in the Works as TV Series From Paramount, Anonymous Content
Lestat is coming to television. Paramount TV and Anonymous Content have optioned the rights to 11 of Anne Rice’s “Vampire Chronicles” books for adaptation, the companies announced Friday.

“It is undeniable that Anne Rice has created the paradigm against which all vampire stories are measured. The rich and vast world she has created with ‘The Vampire Chronicles’ is unmatched and sophisticated with 90’s gothic undertones that will be perfectly suited to captivate audiences,” said Amy Powell, President, Paramount TV, in a statement. “The series is full of compelling characters led by Lestat, arguably one of the greatest original characters, literary or otherwise. We are thrilled to collaborate with Anne, Christopher and the team at Anonymous Content on this epic series.”

Anne’s son Christopher Rice will write the series and serve as executive producer alongside his mother, and Anonymous Content’s David Kanter and Steve Golin.

Rice’s first novel “Interview with the Vampire” was published in 1979 and was turned into the most famous “Vampire Chronicles” film, starring Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt, with Cruise playing the vampire Lestat.

The film rights to Rice’s novels were previously set up at Universal and Imagine Entertainment, but the rights lapsed and Rice decided to develop them for TV last year.

“I’m thrilled beyond words to be working with Paramount TV and Anonymous Content –known for extraordinary cutting edge series such as ‘True Detective,’ ‘Quarry,’ and ‘The Knick,'” said Rice. “In this unique golden age of television, I couldn’t ask for a finer or more passionate team to help bring my beloved vampire hero, Lestat, alive in a series of the highest quality. This is a dream come true, both for me and for Christopher and for the fans who have been asking to see the Brat Prince in this medium for years.”

    Game of Thrones: 4 Spinoffs
HBO is making plans for life after Game of Thrones — by green-lighting a lot more Game of Thrones.
A spokesperson for the cable net confirms that it has inked deals with four writers — Jane Goldman (X-Men), Brian Helgeland (Mystic River) , Carly Wray (Mad Men) and Max Borenstein (Godzilla, Kong: Skull Island) — to “explore different time periods of George R. R. Martin’s vast and rich universe. There is no set timetable for these projects. We’ll take as much or as little time as the writers need and, as with all our development, we will evaluate what we have when the scripts are in.”

I hope AMC stay away from it. Really not into the idea of 6 episodes of JD walking his way to Mega City One after running out of gas, or some such.

Well I wasn't saying give it the Walking Dead crowd, I just meant that it needs a network that won't shy away from the hyper-violence required for the JD satire to work. But on AMC, remember they're also responsible for Mad Men, Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul... not just zombie walking sims.

My issue is that when a big budget is required, AMC drop the ball. Also when they can't figure out how to adapt the source material (see Preacher.... no, actually don't!). HBO would be perfect!

Yep, American Gods just started on Starz and the first five mins of that are pretty violent. Didn't skimp on the budget either, looks great.

    Purge

NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation today featured Blumhouse topper Jason Blum who talked about the upcoming Purge series.
From Blumhouse Television, a co-venture with ITV Studios, and Universal Cable Productions, Purge is slated to run on both USA Network and Syfy in 2018 when a fourth movie in the Blumhouse/Universal franchise will also be released.

Written, directed and executive produced by the film franchise creator James DeMonaco, the series had been described as “an entirely new chapter in America’s 12 hours of annual lawlessness.”

Blum today shed light on the premiere of the series with more details. “It will reveal to the fans what happens the other 364 days of the year and how that law affects people,” he said.

Platinum Dunes and DeMonaco’s longtime producing partner Sebastien K. Lemercier will also executive produce the series.

The feature Purge franchise — about one day each year when murder and mayhem is legalized — has been on the rise, hatching its highest-grossing effort so far with the most recent third movie, The Purge: Election Year.

    Dracula

‘Sherlock’ Team In Talks For Dracula Miniseries With BBC
Sherlock writers Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat are reteaming with Sue Vertue’s Hartswood Films for a new miniseries based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The pair, who have yet to start work on the project, will write the series based on the vampire literary classic and are already in talks with the BBC for UK broadcasting rights.

Details have yet to be revealed and there is no word on casting yet but Moffat and Gatiss, who are currently working on solo projects, are expected to begin work soon on a series of specials based on the 1897 Gothic horror novel, which sees the bloodthirsty Count Dracula move from Transylvania to England.

It has not yet been decided if it will be historical or modern day. The team has had huge success with their modern update of Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman since it first aired on the BBC in 2010.

Dracula will be the first collaboration between Moffat and Gatiss since the last Sherlock episode aired in January. Mofatt wrote and exec produced six seasons of BBC’s Doctor Who before stepping down earlier this year. Actor and writer Gatiss has starred in Game of Thrones as well as Sherlock, the latter in which he played Holmes’ brother Mycroft.

Sister publication Variety first reported the news.

    Rage Is Back

    Syfy to Develop Supernatural Drama
Syfy is developing an hour-long supernatural drama series based on the Adam Mansbach novel “Rage Is Back,” Variety has learned from sources.

The series is set in 1987 during New York’s “War on Graffiti.” In this world, a young graffiti crew copes with the murder of one of their members, investigating a connection to shamans of the past and making them masters of the urban underground who use coded language and symbols in spiritual warfare.

    Syfy had no comment.

In addition to writing “Rage Is Back,” Mansbach is the New York Times bestselling author of “Go the F— to Sleep,” which has sold more than two million copies worldwide. He also wrote the screenplay for the 2016 film “Barry,” which chronicled the life of Barack Obama during his early years at Columbia University.

Mansbach will co-executive produce the project with Danny Hoch, the actor known for his work in films such as “Whiteboyz,” “Blackhawk Down,” and “We Own the Night.” He also had a role in “Barry” as the campus security guard who racially profiles Obama. On the television side, Hoch has appeared in shows such as “The Knick,” “The Good Wife,” and “Law & Order: SVU.” Universal Cable Productions and 3Arts Entertainment will produce.

    Romper Stomper

Iconic Australian Neo-Nazi Film ‘Romper Stomper’
“Romper Stomper,” the iconic Australian neo-Nazi-themed film that was a career turning point for Russell Crowe, is to be revisited as a TV series. The 6-part show is an original production for Down Under video streaming service, Stan.

A high stakes crime drama/political thriller that explores the human face of extremism, the series is to be directed by Geoffrey Wright, who directed the 1992 cult movie, along with Daina Reid “Never Tear Us Apart: The Untold Story of INXS”), and New Zealand’s James Napier Robertson (“The Dark Horse”). Production gets under way this week.

Crowe will not return. Instead, the announced cast includes Jacqueline McKenzie and Dan Wyllie , reprising their roles from the original film. Joining them are Lachy Hulme (“Power Games: The Packer-Murdoch Story,” “Beaconsfield”), Sophie Lowe (“The Beautiful Lie,” “The Slap”), David Wenham (“Lion,” “Top of the Lake”) and rising star Toby Wallace (“Boys In The Trees”).

Production is by John Edwards and Dan Edwards for Roadshow Rough Diamond, with major production investment from Stan and federal funding agency Screen Australia, in association with Film Victoria. International distribution will be handled by DCD Rights.

The series is written by Wright, Robertson, author/poet and rapper Omar Musa (Here Come the Dogs), and journalist and author Malcolm Knox. They frame the show as a timely revisiting of issues as today’s world confronts the politics of hate and hard-right populism.

“Romper Stomper will be unmissable television, as provocative now as the film was in 1992, examining at a personal level the hatred, fear, vengeance and politics hidden in plain sight all around us,” said Stan’s chief content officer, Nick Forward.
