Seems a bit pointless to me as I've no intetest in it but I'm always loath to moan about an interest that people hold dear just because I don't get it.

I used to not get it, then I got it and now I like it.

Actually had a lend car the last week of an 08 2.0 diesel Zetec and the handling is unreal, decent pace in it too

    Off topic apologies
The Focus? Yeah pretty good handling in them alright.

There was a time where I'd be somewhat into it, though not on the bodywork visual angle, all about engine and braking and suspension upgrades. Hotter cams, bigger turbos, bigger brakes that sorta thing. Same for most of my mates, a few of whom then got into motorsport. Which seemed to mostly consist of freezing or boiling one's gentleman parts in Mondello, while ripping up money. :D These days they'd be all about long legged torque and comfort as seems to happen with age and though I drive what would have been considered one of the boyracer mobiles, it's standard, well aside from the blueprinted Spoonsports engine, but sure what are you gonna do...

Oh the good oul days. Dreaming of turning my 1.4 astra into a God only knows what.. Spent the 90s driving cars with no power like they were super cars . Now I have a car with power I'm afraid to use it..

Haha, as I got older I generally got progressively faster cars...and my driving has been getting slower all the time, healthy fear kicked in.
Brightens my day seeing folk with a passion for keeping good examples on the road, knowing the time and expense involved.

It's an interesting sub-culture that spans continents and decades, take American Graffiti for instance. There's a lot worse things that young people can get up to.

Dangerous and bad driving on the other hand isn't exclusive to modified car drivers in Ireland and I've seen a lot more sketchy moves by diesel Audilicious middle aged drivers than younger drivers in modded cars.

Each to their own in my opinion
I'd be more concerned about the amount of clowns going around in fancy cars they can't afford and they can't even drive them

What I find amazing, for such a small country the level and quality of Japanese cars here is very impressive

Depends on the modification really. Improving the turbo, intakes and filters and chipping the car is completely fine in my books, but all the spoilers, rims and skirts just look rubbish. There's a plethora of modern cars that look fantastic with stock pieces. The funny thing about these shít boxes is that the owner generally prices their car way above it's worth "I put 15 grand into her lad", talking about a 99 clio,

You are an idiot if you put this much into a car. Especially when you think the value will magically go up.

if they get enjoyment out of it that is all that matters. better than pissing it against a wall. it shouldn't bother you in the slightest.
i spent thousands on a modified car years ago, don't regret it a bit, i had loads of money back then and still do now so who gives a fcuk?

No one seems to do it anymore. I lived near FAS growing up and it's was streams of starlets, Civics and anything else pimped out in there.

My mate had a lime green Civic, he spent a fortune on it, I remember when he went to sell it it was worth far less than an unmodified one.

I had an astra about 15 years ago, I had a rotten spoiler, Lexus style lights, a sound system that just rattled the car and the sub took up the whole boot, an induction air filter and alloys that had such a low profile tyre I had to replace the tyres almost monthly when they hit a pothole. Oh and a fake exhaust with a hole drilled into the real one, it sounded ridiculous. Good times!

We used to have assemblies done here. But that's going back quite some time now.

Henry Ford, him being of Irish stock and of Cork stock in particular, built the first Ford factory outside of America in Cork in 1917 IIRC. Was still going into the early 80's.

Some more info here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automotive_industry_in_Ireland was all I could find with a quick search. I thought Humbers were assembled here too?

I;d reckon a fair bit of that, other than the recession, is that car companies started to make more cars "souped up" from the factory and the generation got older and got into more suburban "acceptable" cars. BMW were the winners in this. They build cars that can be modified, but more they can still stay socially and age "acceptable". A hot hatch or a mad bastid JDM car wouldn't be to nearly the same degree. And a fair chunk of BMW drivers still modify their cars. Look at the motors forum hereabouts and BMW's are the maker in many ways. Now that's age demographics too, mostly older farts :D. I would say that the younger generations are less into cars in general, especially when it comes to modifying them. Things like extended warranties and PCP loans to buy new kill that as modifying will screw with warranties. More people are in essence "renting" their cars.

Plus modern cars are in many ways less modifiable, or require a lot of resources and money to do so. EG lift the bonnet of most modern cars and what you are faced with is a sea of plastic panels covering up the engine and oily bits. They're designed to be less accessible.

And the twist is they're generally much more reliable and hands off than say cars of the 70's and 80's, where the average car owner would need some mechanical knowledge to keep them going, or pay for someone to do so.

You can buy a car today that will run for 100,000 miles without issue and if an issue comes up it's covered by warranty and someone else. Gone are the days of saturday mornings with dads around the country setting points and checking oil and all that. Something that connected people with the mechanics of their car and made them learn about it, even if they didn't want to. :D That's how I first learned about cars and their anatomy. But that was back in the 80's. Fewer kids are learning like that today, or making that organic connection.

Then there's the major cost of insurance if you do modify. There are still folks out there tinkering, but the landscape has changed quite a bit.

On some Audi's you don't even need to lift the bonnet to top up the fluids.

It was the Japanese cars that first made it pointless to tinker with your car as they would arrive from the factory fully tuned. European cars could still get more power by tweaking back then.

Some fella a few years ago tried to start producing electric 2 seaters in Ireland a few years ago but went burst. Probably insurance (like everything else)

Not sure if they were proper cars or only capable of 80km/h

I'm on an e36 fan page on Facebook. Half the cars are slammed to within an inch of their life. What is the story with rims buried in wheel arches. They look crap and I'd say the handling wouldn't be ideal I'd imagine.

Simple mods can work well like lowering mx5 mrk 3s or changing gt86 stock wheels for example.

Oversized rims I have little time for.

A colour fade is where its at. Wouldn't be too expensive for a smaller car like a Nissan Micra.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 75,475 ✭✭✭✭L1011

My car is lowered, has sideskirts, an increased sized exhaust, red painted brakes (the second most pointless 'upgrade') and pinstripes (the most pointless upgrade) edit: after seeing tints mentioned - absolute max legal under EU standards tints front and rear

They were all done by the manufacturer before I bought it, though; and as a result get zero insurance loading. The twats who glue floppy fibreglass to the roof and cut springs ruin the ability for people to actually do legitimate changes.

We do, we have a healthy industry building Hearses and Limousines, many for export to the UK and beyond.

These are designed, engineered and built in Ireland by several different coachbuilders, all building their own unique designs, obviously there are Coachbuilders on the continent doing the same with their own designs.

    Love the scene myself.

Obviously you’d have more respect for a tastefully finished Twincam or Sierra than you would for a Bora with “Agri Spec” slapped across it, but you’ve to differentiate between the cars that are driven daily and those that aren’t.

Always look forward to the Rally of the Lakes in Killarney every May bank holiday. Reckless bit of craic.
