170k could be covered by both cars and even existing Ioniq should do this in most of conditions. Ioniq has European standard fast charging port which is slowly becomes advantage over LEAF's Japanese one. It also has better economy so it would give overall a better range. On other hand LEAF is more available and easy to buy.

There are plenty of ioniqs around the place right now. I bought one on Friday 😀

Folks, seriously thinking about investing in a new EV and up to now was considering the leaf 40 but with the new ionic out soon I am not so sure now. New car will need to do a 170k round trip with 4 adults once a month, with about half each way made up of motorway at 120kph. Which car is best option, leaf 40 or new ioniq? Rest or diving will be town driving
BTW, Any confirmed launch dates for new ioniq in Ireland ? And if it does launch soon will there be a long lead time for delivery?

170km trip with laden car including 85kms at 120kms/hr in Winter with a Leaf40??

Having owned my Ioniq for the last 3 months, i'd not be comfortable regularly doing 170km with 4 adults in the car and 50% 120km/h motorway driving, and expecting to not have to stop.

Is fair to say the new ioniq will make the trip?
Seems to be a better car on the motorway than the leaf 40 from what I have read so far?
Only problem is I don't know when it will go on sale and what the wait time will be? From memory didn't the original ioniq have crazy lead time when it first launched?

In either car on a very bad day in winter with the car laden, I wouldn't risk it. Particularly not in a Leaf 40. Or I would drive below 120km/h.

The new Ioniq with the 39kWh you will have loads of range left even after the trip, but it's not here yet and we don't know pricing, but likely thousands more than current model. Can't see you getting one for less than 30k on the road. Availability will likely be poor.
Is it worth spending thousands more for the once or twice a year you will have to drive at 100km/h instead of 120km/h? And that's coming from me, I hate driving below the speed limit on motorways

Will be taking the car out of my comfort zone for the first time later this week as I'm heading to a wedding in Clare.

Journey to the wedding/hotel is 171km, 83km of which is Motorway.

I can probably get to the hotel without stopping but I'm planning on topping up in Ennis at the rapid charger there to give myself a bit of a cushion. According to the e-cars map the hotel has a charge point and there is also a slow charger at the supervalu in Miltown Malbay for back up.

It will likely be a completely painless experience but I'm still a bit anxious having never had to really rely on the public system before.

No harm giving the hotel a call in advance and let them know you'll be using the charger, ask them to keep it clear of ICE cars etc!

We're there for two nights anyway so I'm hoping it won't be an issue getting access, I've thrown them an e-mail anyway.

Castlebar to Spanish Point, so will be going via Tuam/Ennis.

Hotel e-mailed me back saying the chargepoint ain't working, good times! If plugshare is anything to go by the chargepoint has been out of commission for at least a year.

Have they an external 3 pin socket you can connect up to? Overnight that would do you perfectly fine.

If they don't, I'd just request a room right beside the car park. And bring my 25m extension cord :D

Riddle me this? Ionic broke down, some back story which may be irrelevant, I had a warning that one tyre was low so I stopped to give it a fill, got back into the car and although it turned on it wouldn't go into drive, AA couldn't do anything so it was towed to the Hyundai garage I bought it from, I won't bore you with the details but it took 2 weeks to fix, anyway since I got it back its 14kw per 100km which was 17 before it broke down, 70% of my commute is motorway, a full charge is now 195km where it was 170km and it now takes 17% of my charge each way to work where it used to take 24%, still waiting on a mechanics report so I don't know what he replaced. Driving a diesel for two weeks was a pain too

Well, that's curious. I wonder was I right that all Ioniqs aren't equal in their efficiency, and that there's an underlying problem.

Glad you got it sorted anyway. Please let us know what the fix was, when you can.

I guess it's more like 2 weeks ago it was still winter in Ireland where now it's summer. We all know efficiency varies with the outside temperature :)

Maybe something wrong with the brakes, like one sticking or something.

There was a noise from the brake on that side which I mentioned when I was putting it in for its first service last month but they said it was nothing

I seem to remember the Ioniq had a recall for something around brakes? And EVs in general can suffer from lack of brake use so it could be part of it.

The car might have sensed that the brake was stuck and refused to drive. Pure guess.

Let us know what your mechanic report says!

Macker was your car manufactured before March 2017? The very early cars had a brake issue that was fixed with a recall. But from memory you bought later than that I think?

A mostly motorway commute having a range of 170km in winter and 195km in summer sounds about right to me. Remember the 7-8 degree temps early morning temps we had at the start of the month? That was winter :D

So my wife was changing the wiper blades, and one of them fell on the windscreen and made a big crack (about 15cm ) We called insurance company and they are going to replace it. takes more than a week as they have to order the replacement from the UK... Just saying - be careful... :)

I was charging on a 22kwh capable charger yesterday (private one not ESB) but when I got back to the car it had charged about 3-4% and the charge had stopped. The the 22kwh charger light was red indicating a fault and when I started the car I got a a message on the display stating ‘fast charger error’.

I was going out and had to charge at the venue on a 3kw Charger at the venue which charged the car to 100% by the time we where going home.

On arriving home I connected to my home charger 7kwh, the car was at about 73%. However I woke up this morning and the car was only at 82% and the same message displayed on the cars display.

Anyone have any ideas what’s t going on here?

My PCP is up in my current car, Skoda Octavia 1.0 TSI DSG, in September and I've been researching hybrids, PHEV's and EV's as a replacement. My mileage is very low, there is only 28,500 KM on the car and my daily commute is approx 14Km round trip. I looked at the Niro PHEV and the 50Km range was perfect for me and the car was lovely but the cost to upgrade to the Niro outweighed any savings in my commute. So I started looking at the Ionic EV as the list price is lower and I thought I might be able to make it work, plus 90% of my mileage is in Dublin so the range would not be an issue.

I took a test drive this morning and loved it but the sales guy wasn't at all interested in selling to me, offered €2K less on my trade in than I can get from Toyota for a Corrolla Sports Tourer. I'd then have to add another €1700 to make up the minimum deposit and I'd be looking at €100 more per month than I'm paying now. With my mileage, I wouldn't be making significant savings on fuel to justify the outlay. Gutted really as the ionic and EV's, in general, are the future. I've verbally pulled the trigger on a Corrolla this afternoon and will pay the deposit on Monday.

When I started looking, I initially dismissed the Ionic but having read a large proportion of this thread and all of your enthusiasm I was convinced it was worth a shot. Hopefully, in another 3 years, the supply of EV's will have improved enough that it will be more competitive to change over next time around.

If you don't mind me asking but what's your budget ? what deposit and monthly payments are you after ?

You can also get PCP on 2nd hand cars.

I paid 10K Deposit and paying 458 PM on BMW i3 Rex which was 9 months old at the time and 9,500 Kms.

Check out PCP on 2nd hand electrics. Not saying get i3 it's just an example and it might be too small for you coming from Octavia boot is a lot smaller but it's roomy inside.

Try another dealer. When I bought my Ioniq last year the local dealer made a poor offer for my trade in. I went to another dealer and negotiated a deal that included €3K more for my car.

    Some dealers are just shite.

Likewise, we got the best deal from Hyundai in Deansgrange, about 2.5K better on trade in and cheaper ioniq base price too.

I’ve heard good things about that dealership, and I can recommend Lyng’s in Kilkenny, where I got mine - after three other dealerships didn’t bother their ar5e even returning my call! Clearly too busy selling daysul Tucsons. Well worth ringing around.

Well done. When I took a test drive at that garage they old fart who took us on a spin said we would be better off buying a V8 (I don't know what that is). He said children had to mine lithium until their eyes and hands burned, and the cars were sailed around the world on a "diesel boat".
Lovely chap, needless to say I did not buy from them.
Some other lad emailed me back and apologized when I left the above feedback after the test drive.
