I was recently looking at some of my car mags from circa 1993 and it struck me that the cars that were featured in the new car mags (What Car, Autocar etc. ) are now a similar age to many of the cars featured in the classic mags (Practical Classic, Popular Classics etc.) A 1993 Mondeo is now as old as a 1967 Cortina Mk2 was in 1993. I find this a bit scary. Time flies, we get old and Ford Mondeos become classics!

The Mondeo in particular seems like such a modern and competent car . There is an article on the design and engineering of it in this months Practical Classics mag. It says that the car was banned from banger racing events as it was too strong and doing too much damage to other cars - no doubt it was a very strong and safe car for the early 90s but I 'm still dubious about it being banned like that.

Not that many Mk1s left on the road now. It's a year or two since I saw one although I did see a 1997 facelift car (mk 1.5?) recently in Monaghan

The Renault Laguna MK1 is another car from the same eerie that should soon become a classic. I still think they look great. I remember going to Goffs to see the snooker there with the old fella and some of his friend too and the driver had a Laguna. He had a Honda Civic before it and found the ride harsh and it was not practicle so he changed to the Laguna which was very smooth over the bumps and he had little to no issues with it.

Renault really did get the Mk 1 Laguna styling right back in 1994.

Massive leap over the Renault 21* in that department - and I say that as one of the few people who actually liked the R21 to look - general perception was that the R21 was boring/bland to look at.

Unfortunately it was ultimately overshadowed by two factors.....

    1) the opposition (Mondeo/Primera etc) were using modern 16 valve petrols. And for diesel heads the Xantia was an attractive car if you wanted to do French style.

    2) the 406 and B5 Passat arrival

    *Lagunas predecessor.

Saw a 92 323F earlier in the week but was not nearly in the same nick as the hatch above. If some one said me name a car form the early 90's I'd say 323F immediately. They were everywhere when I was a lad.

The 323F was the first car that I could not sit in the back. That slope took all headroom away and was an uncomfortable deathtrap (insta-broken neck time)

The brother nearly bought one new in 99 but ended up with a Focus instead. A far better, more modern car.

It's got that really retro boxy look, you can tell what period it's from even if you know nothing about cars.

Pajero was fairly shifting along the N11 and the Saab is a regular driver
