There are different kinds of psychopathic behaviour, driven by nature and nurture, by genetics and environment, or a mixture. That one psychopath in the past didn’t need an internet connection and was not influenced by online media doesn’t mean that another person in another age can’t be.

It’s like dismissing right wing radicalisation caused by the internet by pointing out that right wing white nationalists existed before the internet. It’s not a reasonable argument.

And remember what’s being discussed here is children’s access to porn not adults. We ban children from doing a lot of stuff.

Who even regulates or age verifies amateur porn even on the top porn sites like Pornhub??

It's all a bit mad. When some girl is sucking off her BF and she could be 15,16,17,18,19, who knows. But millions upon millions of such videos on all the top porn sites. It's strange, who is tracking down all these people down asking for ID? How do porn sites get away with showing amateur porn when it's not age verified ?

I'll be honest i stopped watching online porn some time ago because i was feeling more and more uneasy about what i was witnessing. We've got to a place where a guy choking a woman with his penis or a group of 10 or more men having sex with a woman is normalized. Also the obsession with making girls look as young as possible is rather bizarre.

I was replying in response to smart phone use in general. It is ridiculous to claim that pornography makes someone a murder. Ted Bundy tried to claim this but the psychologists dismissed this as nonsense. The pornography available at the time would have been, at best, slightly naughty.

Buy a single use code with your credit card (in the earlier, pre free streaming site days of the internet, the only way for the vast majority to watch porn was to pay with a credit card), similar to phone credit, once entered it allows that IP address to access pornhub etc. I agree the idea of using passport & drivers licenses is ludicrously unnecessary, but they've made the mistakes so we don't have to.

Users who post content on the likes of xtube have to provide a scan of their passport. But this is, of course, easily bypassed.

But that proves noting. Some guy shows he is over 18, so he can now post videos. He can upload any content, one thing is for sure the people who upload to pornsites are not the ones in the videos they up load. So they upload some gf sucking off her bf, and no one knows if they are 17, 16, 20,21, 18. The people in all those amateur videos are not age verified, how the porn sites get away with it is incredible.

Extreme porn has existed since the birth of celluloid, and again we're not talking about adults, we're talking about children, and the effect of hardcore pornography on the minds of 10- 13 year old children for example. Quite frankly I'm amazed by the pushback on this.

Where does the money for the single use cards go?

As a person resident in Ireland I could set up a website, accessible from the UK, that effectively rebroadcasts pornhub for example, I could charge half whatever the card cost and have a nice life for myself on the costa del sol. The site would be blocked, just set up another. infinite riches :D

You'd be better off with a subscription to Girls Out West or some other site that produces its own content, you'd know it's all legit and sensual, and intimate and shot beautifully with legit models.

You could release software that makes accessing porn and dodgy sites harder to get to.

It would certainly cut out any accidental porn finds.

    Education will help too.

Using OpenDNS will do that and costs nothing. Age verification wont solve anything. It'll be easily bypassed, mark my words.

Its very nuanced, for example, 30 or 40 years ago it was common to see parents smoking around children or to see children being given a slap in public and no one thought anything of it. Any parent who smoked arond children or who slaps them in public today would be shamed or judged and this is enough of a deterrent so that for some parents smoking around children or slaping them in public is rare, of course, there are parents who do the right thing because it is the right thing to do.

It would be nice to think that people do the right thing for the right reason but sometimes they do the right thing because they are nudged into it or becaue they will be judged for it.

Banning smartphone for children will not work but a little bit judging of parents could change the culture so that eventually it would be rare for parents to give children unmonitored access to smartphones.

How hard do you think it would be? What percentage of teenagers do you think would know how to bypass filters using a VPN or an alternative browser like TOR?

Teenagers will always find a way around things thats why technology is not the answer its has to become the culture that children are not given access to smartphones and if they are, they are heavily monitored they might get around the monitoring but at the very least its a signal of what is expected form them.

The bulk of teen internet usage is now on phones & tablet, spend time with teenagers, most know the main sites, facebook, youtube etc., some will know what putlocker is, even some will know how to download torrents, but the majority aren't that clued up on vpn's and certainly not on the likes of TOR. again I'll use tax & insurance on cars, it's easy enough to go on facebook, look up "gardai checkpoints", and plan your journey accordingly, and through that some savvy individuals can drive around untaxed & uninsured indefinitely, does that mean we should all do it?

You are seriously deluded if you think kids these days are not "clued up" on these, the few who are not would soon be educated by their peers if such a ban/passport were to be implemented.

I'm not, you greatly overestimate the knowledge of how the internet works that kids have, it's like saying everyone who drives a car knows the ins and outs of an internal combustion engine. Kids are causal users, they know snapchat, facebook & whatsapp like the back of their hand yes, but you're confusing ease of use with in depth knowledge.

I'm willing to bet that that porn was not extremely dark, depicting violence and degradation.

Why such resistance to actually really young kids having their access to the above restricted?

If I needed a car to go to where I was getting my end away, you'd be damned sure I'd learn in double quick time, or ask someone who knew already. The internet sees censorship as a fault and will route around it. Look at the Irish IPs who locked out torrent sites at the behest of government and other bodies who as usual were clueless about how this stuff works(mostly because they were unqualified and old). And yet Irish people are still downloading torrents. A goodly proportion of the threads in the TV forum hereabouts couldn't exist without illegal downloads, unless the folks over there are all Americans with subs to US Netflix, Hula and Amazon.

Apologies, banning porn for teenagers and thus the need for a "porn passport". Are there any studies that justify the need to do this or is it simply a knew jerk reaction a horrendous murder case?

This just reminds me of the witch hunt around video nasties in the 80's/90's and video games more recently where studies were conducted and no proof was found that these things made kids more prone to violence.

I'm generally the last person to be calling for bans of things/asking for more government regulation/interference in our private lives, however with regards to smartphones+social media I genuinely wouldn't mind if they were completely outlawed for minors, U16 at least - regular phones are all they need/should need at that age.
The rise of smartphones and social media's influence is starting to take effect much earlier and I have no doubt it is linked with the growing narcissism and anxiety we're seeing a lot more of in young people. Apart from maps, I can't see any marginal benefits that smartphones have over standard mobiles for children - it's the extras such as internet access, live videochatting etc which are causing most of the problems.

Again banning it or the idea of a porn passport won't work its much more subtle than that.

Its like underage drinking most teenagers drink underage but society still signals that the legal age of drinking is 18 because for some people alcohol is addictive.

I've just checked there, the UK porn block can be bypassed in less than two minutes by googling three letters, clicking the first result, clicking download and then clicking next 3 times.

No matter how much of an idiot you are you can do it. Once one kid figures it out it will spread across the country by word of mouth within weeks if not days.

I'm not in the we shouldn't do anything because one thing doesn't work camp, I don't think many are, but this thing just doesn't work.

You have absolutely no credibility at this stage. The below is from the very first link through your highlighted link.

    https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6088458/
Cross-sectional evidence suggests that pornography use is related to lower mental well-being among adolescents but it remains unclear if changes in well-being are related to the dynamics of pornography use within this population. We examined the relationship between pornography use, subjective well-being, symptoms of depressions and anxiety, and self-esteem in two independent panel samples (N = 455; N = 858) of Croatian adolescents using cross-lagged path analysis and lagged linear mixed models. After controlling for impulsiveness and family environment—factors that are unlikely to be influenced by pornography use—earlier levels of pornography use were not significantly associated with subsequent decreases in subjective well-being across gender and panel. However, pornography use was associated with increases in both self-esteem and symptoms of depression and anxiety, albeit only among adolescent women in one of the two panels. In addition, low subjective well-being was associated with a subsequent increase in pornography use, but only in female adolescents in one panel. This study’s results are not consistent with concerns about pornography use negatively contributing to male adolescents’ psychological well-being, but suggest potential antagonistic links between pornography use and specific facets of mental well-being in adolescent women. Such links should be considered tentative until verified with further research.

I've highlighted the most important bit in bold for you.

The motivation is the key. I watched internet porn in the dial up days as a young lad, dial up was a far more effective barrier than any block the UK state could come up with.

There are more factors than just that. Torrenting as a medium is dying as people are looking for more convenient methods even where there is no ban. In some areas usage has gone down due to the site owners being tracked down and arrested. That wouldn't be happening with a porn ban for under 18s.

I'm in a group chat with a bunch of lads i grew up with (18 in the group, average age late 40's early 50's) some of the things they send to the group are shocking and believe me i have seen some sights in my lifetime so it takes a lot to shock me.

Even if you close down every porn site there are still apps like whatsapp where content gets shared.

There's a whole network of drug dealing done through apps now, they can't un-ring the bell with this technology

That's a completely different situation. And potential checks at the website level is like putting up an ankle high fence to keep people out. There are other potential solutions, most involve education and parents getting involved. But this proposal isn't a solution at all.

Don't be facetious, you know that's not what I'm saying.

What I am saying is that in order to ban something (or introduce measures to restrict something) you need credible justification for doing so. Hyperbole like "our moral cowardice got a young girl killed" is completely irrelevant, especially when there is literally no proof that this is true.

It's a complete knee jerk reaction and won't solve anything.

Oh FFS. The level of truly simple, I hesitate to call it "thinking" when a tragedy occurs never ceases to surprise me. It seems to get worse if anything. In another thread on the matter it was suggested we need more of all things feminism because yeah that would have stopped this happening. Are people who appear to be generally bright enough actually this thick when hard sums come into it? Jesus.

In 1973 a seven year old boy was murdered in an attic in Palmerstown Dublin by a 16 year old, in what looked to be a satanistic type rite. Pre internet. No doubt in good oul Catholic Ireland(where the case was kept out of the news) it was blamed on satanic forces or evil fillums or books.

I seriously doubt that's what it is CG. In general people don't tend to self examine or examine long and deeply held ideas and when terrible tragedies happen they really don't. Or rather the long held certainties shake at such tragedies and they look around for equally simplistic answers because they're comforting. Reality rarely is.
