Every day is straight pride day. We don't need one.

    Absolutely.

But there's a subtle difference in observing that a community or a culture would share commonalities, and treating an individual differently based on those commonalities.

For example, it's not racist for one to observe that there's a problem with bravado, violence and sexism amongst black communities in certain parts of the US.

It is however racist for one to treat a black man from one of these communities under the assumption that he is a violent, sexist, showboater.

The simplest and most obvious one is travellers. There's a massive problem with criminality in the travelling community. That's not racist or hateful. It's a measurable fact.

But it is very much racist to assume an individual traveller is a criminal. Or to call all travellers criminals.

Fighting discrimination doesn't mean that we pretend stereotypes don't exist. That would be stupid. It would be ignoring basic sociology.

It means that we don't assume that anyone is a stereotype of their nationality, race, gender or sexuality.

In this case, the "white man" in the story fulfilled the "white man" stereotype, as a niche magazine aimed at African-Americans might observe it.

So, if I wrote a story where I said 'Black man went peak black man', everybody would be cool with it?

one of the actual homophobic veins running through this thread is the accusations of closetedness against anyone arguing with a gay person

you must see what a regressive and ugly caricature this is.

shame on anyone stooping to it.

You cant compare the two. Black people were discriminated against! Its easy to look down on black people when you are overflowing with white male privilege!

You’re focusing on one article. Badly written. In a news source I’ve personally never heard of. The larger agenda of ridiculous pieces like these is to sow divide and go as viral as possible.

Worse, far worse happens on any given afternoon or evening on o Connell st.
Goes unreported. Well this week aside.

All black people aren’t to blame becuse one hack used a rather crap generalisation about ‘a white male’

The article is laughable. The event was unnecessary. It’s ultimately pointless.
    Let’s all move on.

I dont have a victim complex. I just wont let you and others downplay homophobia. and i'm definitely not a victim because i fight back.

You downplay real homophobia every time you overreact to every little word or comment.

I'd say if I described a damaged car part or item as "bent" you'd throw a fit over it.

Well I didn’t want to outright call anyone homophobes who aren’t even possessed of the courage to be honest about it and rather just skate around the fringes of it, but tip toe over it.

But shame on me for stooping to that?

Nah. Shame on them for the ‘shoving it our faces’ nonsense and countless other insecure easily rattled nonsense that makes up a lot of the contributions made here.

describing being called a queer as "a little word or comment" IS downplaying homophobia. you just can't help yourself.

Why are you playing dumb? You know full well why I'm saying that.

Bent is a legitimate description of an item that is bent. It is also a commonly used derogatory term for gay. If I used it in its proper context, you are the kind of person I would expect to accuse me of homophobia for using the term "bent".

And to answer your next question, "what kind of person is that?" I've already answered. A melodramatic attention seeking person with a victim complex who sees persecution at every corner.

You're a disgrace to the real victims of actual homophobic persecution through the years.

I've been discriminated against. Lots of times. I have no privilege. You don't know anything about me except for my race, my gender and my sexuality, yet you consider me privileged.

There is more to me than that. Shame on you for your generalisations.

Im white so there is shame on me. I can accept that. I think most white liberal americans can accept that they are very privileged too. That is why there is overwhelming support for reparations to the black community. White wealth should be broken down and distributed to cover these reparations. The only politicians with the stomach to plow ahead with these plans will be Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and Ilhan Omar. trump is scared of them and so he should be. A socialist world government is the only way the planet will be saved. These women will begin something great!

    Except that's not happening.

People uncomfortable with gay "content" think it be like that, but it don't.

A TV programme can be wall-to-wall heterosexual couples groping and kissing and doing whatever else. Then the next scene two lads have a quick romantic kiss and certain people leap up going, "OMG, I don't mind gays but why do they have to shove this in our faces all the time?!"

What makes this even funnier is that all of this perceived gay oppression, is people literally shoving it in their own faces. Get your nose out of twitter, boards and facebook for five minutes, and you'll notice that the real world is not talking about pride every five minutes.

If you feel like you're being overwhelmed with gay content, it's because you're subscribing to it.

Disagree... take the latest season of Designated Survivor for example (SPOILERS etc).

I'm halfway through the season and the LGBT messaging is extremely in your face.

    - We have the now apparently obligatory gay couple which is fine (not so sure about the subplot where one of them has HIV and gets stroppy because the other thinks he should have been told before they had sex, but then a few eps later apologises for his annoyance?)

    - The president's sister in law is trans and we have a whole segment with a trans support group discussing the issues they face, and a sequence where an older white woman calls her out for being in the wrong bathroom

Now to be fair, I wanted to tell that oul biddy to STFU  but to claim that these topics are not being put front and centre in mainstream entertainment is nonsense. Where it's a tad jarring is that these are wedged in to make a statement rather than anything else, and especially in an existing series that never had such messaging previously, and arguably nothing to do with it - it's a political/conspiracy thriller after all.

Oh good god. That type of thinking is ridiculous. I'm glad that it's not taken seriously.

It must be so hard to hate yourself because of your skin colour. I judge people on their personalities and their actions, not because of the sins of their (great great grand) fathers.

There is no overwhelming support for reparations. Why just the blacks? Irish were slaves too.

Do you think England should give us money for the famine? Should the Scandinavian governments pay out for every country the Vikings invaded?

    Perhaps lay off American media.

At no point were the Irish slaves in America. Or pretty much anywhere.
They did own many many slaves over there but weren’t slaves themselves.
You’ve just hard earned the ignore button.

Really? I genuinely thought they were. Perhaps not in america but in other parts. If I am wrong, I will gladly retract that part.

The rest of my post stands though

From a quick Google, it appears that the common consensus is that it is indeed a myth. I won't edit my post because it was a mistake that I was rightly pulled up on

Every day is a school day. I had no idea what I was told from an early age was incorrect. Never questioned it. Didn't really matter to me.

Anyway, it still doesn't affect my point. But just wanted to acknowledge my mistake.

    This’ll boil your biscuits.
The first inhabitants of North America and South America came from Africa up through Russia and spread over continents and over the Bering straits down into the Americas. Eek!

It is an anti-British myth, along with the one about the Brits causing the famine by deliberately exporting all the food.
But there is some truth in both myths. Normal imports and exports went on during the famine, including foodstuffs, according to market prices at the time. When people couldn't afford to buy the food, they died.

Early Irish settlers to the Carribbean went as "indentured servants" which means their fare was paid but they had to work off a debt over several years. So they were kept almost as slaves during that time. By modern standards it would be called slavery, but it was not the true slavery as was suffered by the Africans. Some wanted to go to the colonies, others were just evicted and had no choice.
