It’s the same every year. They’ll not be long dropping quotes. I’d say cattle will come fit off grass early this year. They had a good thrive in the back end, were housed late and got out to grass early and seem to be fattening up already. That’s the case here anyway.

Since the start of the year we have killed 35K more cattle than last year. As well there was a very strong kill last back end with maybe 20-30 more cattle killed than normal. While cattle may come fit a bit earlier I am not sure if there is any glut of cattle around. A percentage are tied up with ANC witholding time as well.

As well summer lads area creature of habit and a good few of these will not have started to feed cattle yet. Kill has dropped like a stone from North of 36K heading down below 29K in 4-5 weeks. Chills will now be empty and all that shelf space the processors have grabbed over the last winter will needed to be kept filled. I think the price will keep rising for another 2-3 weeks after thatit is anyone's guess. In general a lot of summer finishers will carry cattle until mid/late July to keep getting the weight on. Only then will the 30 months start to be an issue.

I heard Larry killed 10k of their own cattle this week. That might cap prices for a week or two.

One third on administration. One third to the factorys and their controlled feed lots and one third between the beef farmers.
Better than a kick in the stones but itll works out about €500 per farmer on average.

The above has no basis on any fact, just my cynical, pessimistic musings

100 million is peanuts in the sector , the other schemes which have 40 and 60 million budgets ie BDGP give very small returns for a lot of red tape to a much smaller pool of farmers.

3.10 for heavy well fleshed cows is what I've heard this week.

What would an 800 kg stock bull be getting in the factory, just over 3yo

Had agent out yesterday looking at Bullocks.

Cant get them in for at least 2 weeks.
    3.95 base currently on offer.
No sign of a price rise either, if anything he expects to go the other way.
    Midlands area.

Thats depressing. I was getting 3.85 base and no cut if they're overweight 2 weeks ago and held on. Will have to let them go soon though. Oldest of them is just over 15 months now so i'll have to look to get them booked in. Where were ya getting 3.75 if ya dont mind me asking?

I'm in a similar situation, was quoted 3.90 last week said I would hold out for 4.00

I don’t believe this story. Lads will kill cattle when fit not for the chance of a few euro that they probably won’t see. This was another tabloid type headline from the journal.

Cattle are coming fit sooner this year due to the nice weather since turn out .It seems cattle are killing high fat scores off grass as well .I suppose it makes since sure the dry grass and the dry lie

Lads will often do stupid things or are tempted by the free offer. As Cute George cattle are comming fit sooner. Another thing is this years lads have switched from Maize/Barley/Hulls as a finishing ration to Maize/Hulls due to cost of Barley this is killing cattle into a higher FS faster as well. I know of one lads that was being encoraged to do it by his BIL.

Would Maize and Citrus pulp say 60:40 be good enough to finish cattle at grass ... say 5kgs /head /day for 6/7 weeks

Would be okish but soya hulls are way better source of fibre this time of year. Citrus is 25% sugar compared to 6-8% for hulls. Hulls really dry cattle up this time of year. The sugar in the citrus might push the maize through too fast. I never go beyond 3 kgs this time of year. If cattle are a bit behind I start to feed earlier. If you have a bunch of 20+ getting ration getting 60+ kgs in total the strongest with the biggest mouth is gobbling nearly 5kgs while the lightest and shyest is only getting a bit with 1 kg.

I have three right good LMX 3 years olds they were very light when I bought them last July not even 350kgs on average they will be 8-10 weeks on ration. By the time we get to within 3-4 weeks of going they will be gobbling 5+ kgs even though the bunch they are in will be only getting 3kgs/head
