From the guys who made Banshee.

Warrior is an American action television series created by Jonathan Tropper and Justin Lin set to air on Cinemax beginning in 2018 or early 2019. It is based on an original idea by Bruce Lee

Set at the times of the Tong Wars in the late 1800s in San Francisco, the series follows a martial arts prodigy originating in China who moves to San Francisco and ends up becoming a hatchet man for the most powerful tong in Chinatown.

Expect brutal violence, unnecessary profanity and copious nudity.

    As Unearthly said.

Banshee was one of the most entertaining, kick ass, ridiculous shows I'd seen in years and I loved every minute of it. And while I'd love more it didn't outstay its welcome.

    I'd have faith in this.

Exactly. Banshee, Martial Arts, Bruce Lee, Cinemax, Hoon Lee(Job from Banshee)

This was great. Not sure the story makes a whole lot of sense yet - there are a lot of characters. But I'm enjoying it.

If there was one negative, I think the music doesn't suit the show 100% (in the fight scenes anyway).
The way they got around the subtitles was very clever.

Loved the intro too. I never got tired of Banshee's intro and I think this one was just as good.

ah crap, careful googling any laws they mention. gives an idea of what might happen if this goes on for a few seasons.

2: looks like this will develop into a city-wide story but that makes sense knowing banshee

3: F***ing hell, for a second I thought he was gonna
    burn the whole family!

Very enjoyable so far but it's not doing good in the ratings. Banshee used to average between 0.4 to 0.6, while this is just doing over 0.1. Quarry which was a great show on cinemax had similar ratings as Warrior and was cancelled after 1 season

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

I was thinking the same. The ratings are terrible but apparently it's already been renewed for a second season.

At least Quarry works fine as a once off, was a shame it was cancelled but it's still worth watching and there aren't loose ends really. Nothing worse than a cancelled show that ends with cliff hangers and/or no resolution to the story.

I'm enjoying it so far, I was a big fan of Banshee. Hopefully the ratings pic up, as it definitely has potential

good show, surprised to see that most of the "irish" are actually british actors

Only watched the trailer. Have no watched Banshee. Am hoping for something 'Gangs of New York'-esque. Will I be disappointed?

    A great episode this week.

    China meets Deadwood.

Just read it was inspired by the Hateful Eight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    That was freakin cool!

Can't say I remember a western being done like that before
    AND
    it felt like proper western!

Hateful Eight inspiration sounds about right!

    That scene where he
    rips out yer mans throat!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    6: That was gruesome!

    7: Well.. next up:
    Bloodbath!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

8: Right! I get the feeling the next episode is gonna be one episode lenght fight! Something like a cross between the lenght of one of Rockies fights crossed with van Dammes AWOL (which upon googling I learned is somehow mainstream know as .. Lionheart? wtf)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

9: Next one is the finale!

    Honestly thought
Ah Sahm had it after he hit yer man in the chest. Looked like he broke through the ribs into something vital. So he's outta the business now from the looks of it. Unless.. is the long term plan for him to team-up with Ah Toy?

Not sure what the story with the
cop is. Just cos he was askin questions? Feels like that'll bring unwanted attention.

    What a beat down
at the start all the same!

Really enjoyed the season and hopefully it gets renewed.

    Already renewed for a S2.

I'm going to catch up on it when it comes to Sky at end of the month

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    Finished!

    10: Awe Yis! :D

Honestly don't know how they got me to that point.. but they did. Fair play.

I was wondering who yer man
    who died was
cos he seemed familiar but when I looked him up, this was the only part that jumped out as to where I might be remembering him from:

Gonna be a fair few fights to come.. but if it doesn't get renewed.. you know.. that ending kinda works better than most cancelled shows.

    At the end, did
Ah Toy and Ah Sahm seem familiar? Like Ah Sahm seemed a bit Keanu Reeves .. ish.

Cool. Will be watching that tomorrow.
TBH, it started off a bit corny to me, without anything much new in it (switching from Chinese to English is clever though), but it's really grown on me. I noticed though the fighting (the Jeet Kune Do) was good at the start, but started taking place progressively more in the dark- I literally couldn't see what what was happening.
It's like long form 'Gangs of New York', except where the Irish were against African-Americans taking jobs after the civil war in that, it's the Chinese fleeing their home country in this. Always good to have a historical backdrop to the politics as well as the punch-ups!

A very enjoyable series, even with some dodgy accents and acting, and a lot of fight scenes occurring in dimly lit/dark backgrounds.
It is more than just a kung-fu-based series though. There's plenty of intrigue/double-crossing, and cultural/historical angles for the story-lines to zip along; so looking forward to season 2.

Just finished it and wanted more.

    So in episode 5
Did they take the gold, at least, since they didn't take the coffin. And I was trying to figure out how the bad guys knew there was gold. At first I thought the gold was been smuggled to them by someone working where the body was lifted.

And I expected throughout the season
There'd be more interaction between Ah Sahm and Bill after revealing he could speak English

I do find it strange hearing Wang Chao and Ah Toy speaking in broken English after hearing them speaking clearly. It makes it seem like they're faking the broken English for the non Chinese. But knowing they're not makes it stranger that Mai Ling apparently speaks perfect English or else Buckley is speaking her language.

Speaking of Buckley, he reminds me of Clay from Banshee

It is done making original shows however season two was renewed and filming last year before the decision to fold it into HBO Max was made.

So more than likely season two will be the last original made by them.

They have one more co production with a South African network to might get renewed called Trackers.

That's fantastic news, I really enjoyed season one. Just a real shame that Jett won't get a second season, as that was left with a real cliffhanger at the end...

Real shame. Even though it's only one season people should check out Jett. Really great series; brilliant showcase for Carla Gugino.

A small glimmer of hope for another season.

    Carla Gugino
I’ve been radio silent waiting for the official news that Cinemax will no longer be making original programming. And now that is the case. A very unusual and unforeseen development for sure. Soooooo, I wanted to let you know personally that the hunt for a new home for #JETT is ON.”

The Trump rally parallels this week was funny because it was so obvious.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,284 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Halfway through now and hoping they were able to do some sort of ending for the series.

    Liking it so far.

Was said before but do find it funny that they hire an Englishman to play the role of an Irishman fighting against foreigners taking jobs away from the Irish.

Also while I said before about it being strange, I like how they have 3 different ways of talking depending who they're with. Speaking in plain English when with other Chinese. Speaking Cantonese to each other when in the company of English speakers, then speaking broken English to English speakers. Must be hard to do it that way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    I'm in catch-up.

Cinemax is finished? Ah crap. Went to wiki after reading that and I can't remember seeing that this show was made in Cape Town, South Africa before. Wow! The old west episode like!

2.1: Solid intro, recap of where we are and what's happening. Not sure what's happening with the Tongs. Looks like that'll be a longer plot. The Irishman though.. I get the feeling something he does will kick up some fire between the Tongs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

2.2: Phew! Some of those violent scenes!
Jeez, that message that Mai Ling sent to the other Tongs by wiping out the young lads. I assume that you guy had to show some face and seem to not back down and Zing then knew why he was there. There wouldn't be a different outcome.

Then the sonata scene where it seemed everyone knew where they were and kinda knew they were trapped by it. It was like.. artistic

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

2.3: Oh F**k! I nearly fell outta my chair when
the attack on Bills house kicked off!
Everything feels like it's about to kick off all over the place now!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    2.4: A learning episode.
I could almost hear the "Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime" song at the end there with Sopie. That's Penelope screwed I'd say. Guessing the contract has a 'non-performance' get-out-of-jail clause for the mayor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,284 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

    Well Episode 2.6 was
the equivalent of season 1's episode 5.
I do like a fighting tournament. Liked that episode.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    2.5: Things moving along.
Mai Ling and her Tong side weakened from losing the Fung Hai. So now she's looking to compensate for that by going to Ah Sahm but there again, it's like she and yer man want chaos anyway. Not sure if we'll see Zing again so I'm guessing he got a better way out (big fight with Li) than if he had just been done by the cops.
