Need Lowry there to have his words. Also standing on a path like that should not be cause for a drop

My stream has no sound, why is he getting a drop?

It really is a silly rule. He was behind a tree and having to play out backwards (or have a penalty drop). He really should not be given a drop that grossly changes the shot to be played.

I know the rules but sometimes they do seem to be bent too much.

Disagree... the whole purpose of dropping from knee height is to decrease the possibility of the ball rolling outside the relief area, then having to be re-dropped and then having to be placed (often to the advantage of the player).

The avoidance of the above should speed things up.

The player should be allowed to drop the ball from any height between the shoulder and the knee

Got out of jail with that drop. As they say he's 'as lucky as a cut cat'. Getting all the breaks over last 3 days.

I agree it looks bad there but at same time it’s hard to have rules that cover for every specific instance. I think most golfers would have done the same, whether shane was alongside shaking his head or not.

Players were constantly using the drop to intentionally get the ball to bounce/roll outside the permitted drop area and therefore allowing them to place the ball. So the knee drop is a good idea - prevents players abusing the rule.

Now Rory is playing the silly free-drop rule.....or maybe he won't get it.

He is deliberately trying to stand in a strange way to get a free-drop.

However DJ shouldn't have had the drop either as he could have narrowed his stance.

Ref not looking very convinced here.

Ref not looking very convinced here.

Rules only apply to certain players it seems.

Rory taking the piss there..ref was correct..imo.

Neither one of them should have got the drop but that's an absolute joke. Certain rules for certain players

    That's that for Rory. Unlucky.

Again... failing to see the obvious point. Players intentionally will drop it from shoulder height... twice.... and then get to place it. This is slow.

It's a simple rule and people will get their heads around it eventually.

Now Rory has let it get to his head. He was trying to chase a par and should have calmed down.

DJ bent the rules as he could have easily played the shot but Rory let it get to him.

Ref correct there regarding Rory looking for a free drop. If his foot was on the path, Rory's downswing would have hit the tree before the ball. Good call... but a shame all the same.

Neither of them should have been a free drop. However I don't think the rules are different for different players. The referee should have asked DJ to narrow his stance and to say that he was milking the rules.

Ruling was correct imo however the previous ruling in DJ’s favour was a joke. Cheating in a roundabout way

Yeap, he questioned how Rory would play the shot not DJ

Great putt by Rory.........either he will force it too much now or start to play unbelievable golf.

He was trying to stand in a direction that he wouldn't normally. He was looking for the free drop.

DJ was very luck as he was in exactly the same position but he convinced the ref that he had to touch the path with his foot.

Agree.....why didn't he just say to DJ......you don't have to stand like that. I guess it's hard to ask a player to narrow his stance.

Maybe the ref should not be questioning what type of shot the player should make but rather just make sure that the stance isn't abnormally wide.

The ruling either should be that if a player can take a narrow stance and still be in balance then play the shot. Otherwise if the player stands on the path irrespective of the direction that he is playing the shot then free-drop.

But DJ's ruling was just wrong in my opinion. He hit it behind a tree and should have been forced to play.

Saw it now...joke that one got it and other didn't. Refs job is to enforce rules, not day how the player should be playing shots.

DJ shot, if taking that stance, would clatter the root of the tree, so he wouldn't take that stance.

Rory should have angled slightly and gone wide stance. Think he can feel aggrieved
