Lansdowne is also hybrid, according to their stadium tour anyways.

    Really? Fair enough.

It can definitely be done anyway. The pitch might be in rough condition after the weekend but sure the soccer team are ****e anyway.

Has a 12 year shelf life approx.
Was at an A.I. before the hybrid went in and the turf acted like wet cardboard. It was crap...

Any money earned for using the Aviva will have to be shared with the FAI to some degree, no?
The naming deal ends this year and with Irish rugby's current good standing, i think the price tag for a 10yr naming deal will go over the current €4M a year. I'd love for it to be sponsored by "ThreeRedKings" to pi$$ certain people off😊

Apparently the name deal was already renewed last year.

Aviva retained the rights until I think 2025 at some stage last year. Probably got a good price for it early in the year actually...

I wonder if Munster are keeping an eye on John Madigan. He is under contract with Massy in the ProD2 until summer 2020. He looked like a big prospect until injuries got in the way. He made 21 starts last season and is on 8 this season.

Do Munster really need another lock?

Billy Holland will be turning 35 in September 2020 so he may be retiring. Madigan will turn 26 at the same time. Darren O'Shea will also be out of contract.

He's a huge TH lock unlike Whycherly and Beirne, Holland will more than likely be gone by then too.

Is there anyone else in the academy? Don't get me wrong, I'd rather you raided the ProD2 than the Leinster academy but surely promoting someone is the best step?

Having said that, Massy will probably get relegated and you'd have to imagine he'll either be released from his contract or he has a break spelled out.

There's two u19s who are involved but it will be a few years before they're viable for the first team I'd imagine.
Madigans biggest problem was three years with very little game time, he's getting that consistently now so hopefully he can kick on.

Completely forgot about John Madigan. He's an absolute unit. I wouldn't hold his lack of appearances during his time at Munster against him. He just kept picking up injuries. Sure Tadhg Beirne couldn't get a sniff at Leinster and now he's one of the best locks in the NH.

Not sure how Madigan has been going at Massy, but if he's put his injury woes behind him, I'd love to see him back in Ireland.

Would be great to see John come back looks to be getting a good few games in France which can only help him.

Always wanted to see him get time but as others mentioned he always picked up an injury and DOS seemed to get more game time.

Unfortunately the Leinster academy don't really produce good locks on a regular basis. James Ryan is the only regular Irish international since Toner came through. Even when they do come through its seems hugely talented lads are just let go.

In the Munster academy I believe Tom Aherne is rated. Came through the youths system so needs to bulk up and develop more but raw material is there.

Who are the hugely talented lads just let go. Beirne is an obvious answer but he was plagued with injury at that time.

No province really does though which I assume is partly because our lack of 6'5"+ people knocking around. Aside from the golden patch of POC/DOC/MOD/Ryan who all emerged in a 5 or 6 year spell about 15 years ago, no province really has produced locks of the required quality yet with any consistency.

I think it's fair to credit the Scarlets for Beirne. Ulster managed to produce Henderson but aside from him and James Ryan, there hasn't been any Irish test lock of note produced in the past decade really aside from a glut of guys who have very low cap counts.

It's a position which benefits from experience and produces guys who have serious longevity so it's very hard to break into proceedings and for players to reach their ceiling without that opportunity.

I think there are probably 5 or 6 guys in the provinces who could potentially be test level regulars but they require at least a full season of first choice rugby for their province before getting some solid game time at test level. Dillane is obviously the most likely given his natural talent if he can get his career fully back on track. But I would have faith in guys like Wycherley, Roux, Molony, Treadwell and Thornbury too along with a couple of serious prospects in a couple of academies.

Thornbury had serious potential but suffered injuries too during the academy and hadn't reached the levels he now has. He ended up having to play pretty low level local rugby before kick starting his career.

Alan O'Connor was another lad who looked decent and had a bit of bite but Ulster offered him a deal whilst in the Leinster sub-academy after he wasn't included in the initial academy offers by Leinster.

Whatever happened to Sean Mc Carthy?
He was a Munster lock. I assume he didn't pan out?
I think size is a factor for us. A.O.C is a good lock imo, but perhaps he's undersized. The same with Molony, good athlete but possibly a little light.
These lads are about 108kgs. But, opponents are generally a few kgs bigger.
Henderson is about 115 kgs, which is a good weight for a lock.
We rarely produce locks of around 120kgs.
Claffey at Connacht is close as is Nagle.
But, the young locks coming up through the academies, seem to be more skilled and better prepared.
I think Dalton at Ulster, could be great if he learns the handling skills.
Oisin Dowling is another lad that seems small for a lock.
I think he could be a decent squad player and have a good career.

Is there really a need for comments like this? This is a rugby chat forum, you should expect questions about rugby players to be asked/answered here.

Why bother with a rugby forum if posters are going to be told to use Google.

Was it reasonable? Have friends interested but thought with Rangers match it could be pricey
