england u20s look very very good , buckets of talent

Yea there's a lot of talent throughout that whole team. Kpoku, Hill and Willis are the standouts in the forwards, but there's other names I recognise as well. In the backs, Smith, Lawrence, Maunder and Redpath will all probably play for England. Wilkinson, Sleightholme, Murley and Dingwall are all good players too. I'm not sure how strong France are this year, but it will take an exceptional team to beat a full strength England side.

Do you think Ireland have a chance against them?

If the clubs release all their players, I can't really see us winning. There's a lot of professional experience in that England team with Hill, Smith and Redpath having trained with the wider england squad, and some of the other names I mentioned have played really well for their club. I think this could potentially be one of those outlier years for them.

But I reckon there's quite a lot of talent in the Ireland squad as well. Doubt there will players on the same career trajectory as Ryan, Larmour, Stockdale or Porter but could turn out to be excellent players down the line. I think u20's should always be watched with that in mind.

I think we'll build towards the rwc. We've been very poor these last two.
    I fear relegation tbh.
But, I think the coaching ticket was very poor last year. Whoever the defence coach was, needs to be replaced.
As a collective, I thought we were at sea, the lads didn't appear to be on the same page.
Individually, there were some good players. I thought O',Sullivan was very good, Dunne was decent too.
But, other lads were poor overall, Masterson did not impress imo and neither did Sylvester.
Anyway, new group and really looking forward to the 6nations.

Well we always are building towards the world championship and you cant talk about relegation at all unless you have some knowledge of other teams etc
Think you are being very unfair on named individuals there last year but its last year so move on.

Yea, last year's team looked very messy and no attack or defensive structure. I reckon the number of decent players coming from that group could surprise people though. Doris seems to be putting pressure on Deegan, O'Toole is getting a lot of game time for a young tighthead, Hume just had a good game against Leinster considering the team he was in, Lowry has played well for Ulster, and Hugh O'Sullivan is getting minutes off the bench for Leinster.

Other players I think might turn out well are Jack O'Sullivan, Dunne, Hall and Tommy O'Brien. That's just me trying to look on the bright side though.

IMO this year should has more talent, but I'm not sure who's injured/available.

    What! No Ulstermen?
Surely Kernahan will start. He's played senior rugby this year.
    Azure Allison? Is he hurt?
When will the squad be announced?

kernohen not likely to be released.

Allison is injured as is Stewart Moore.

JJ McKee might start at 4 if Baird doesn't make it back in time from his injury.

    3rd week of Jan.

Just because they’ve played for Ulster doesn’t mean they’re better, ulster give all their academy players game time, doesn’t mean they should automatically start on the u20s, there may be better prospects in different provinces, just because they played for Ulster, doesn’t automatically make them guaranteed starters, but I could be wrong, just my opinion

Kernahan if released should play but mightnt as Ulster might keep him for pro14 during the 6 nations.
Squad not likely to be announced for a couple of weeks.

Ulster do give their academy players game time earlier than some of the other provinces but playing professional regardless of where does indicate theyre further down line in many ways and should be starting for 20s

Not always the case that they should be starting 20s, remember Hugh O’Sullivan and Jonny Stewart last year, O’Sullivan ended up starting ahead of him, not taking anything away from the ulster players, they are good, but I don’t think playing for Ulster automatically indicates that they’re better than someone else from a different province

Shame. Has done very well when called upon.

generous, but he is very young to be relied upon so much.

That's pretty much full strength I think, quite a few players returning from injury. Can't think of anyone who was really unlucky to miss out.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,018 ✭✭✭Bridge93

Couple of posts a few pages back that have aged spectacularly. One was adamant there was no chance Hawkshaw would be captain as hes potentially fourth choice.

It's probably not the right thread but I'm sure regular readers of the U20s threads will be able to help with the below information.

    15 Jacob Stockdale -Frontline international
    14 Matthew Byrne - ???
13 Shane Daly - Squad player at Munster
12 Conor O’Brien - Squad player at Leinster
11 Hugo Keenan - Academy player at Leinster
10 Bill Johnston - Squad player at Munster
9 Stephen Kerins - Academy player at Connacht
1 Andrew Porter - Bench international
2 Adam McBurney - Squad player at Ulster
3 Ben Betts - Moved from Munster sub-academy to Leicester, now at Ealing in the RFU Championship.
4 Cillian Gallagher - Squad player at Connacht
5 James Ryan (capt) - Frontline international
6 Greg Jones - Squad player at Ulster
    7 David Aspil - ???
8 Max Deegan - Squad player at Leinster

16 Vincent O’Brien - Academy player at Munster
    17 James Bollard - ???
18 Vahktang Abdaladze - Squad player at Leinster
19 Sean O’Connor - Academy player at Munster
20 Kelvin Brown - Moved from Munster sub-academy to Aurillac, now playing AIL with Shannon.
    21 Niall Saunders - ???
22 Johnny McPhillips - Backup 10 at Ulster
23 Jimmy O’Brien - Squad player at Leinster

Looking back that 23 was absolutely stacked. James Ryan and Stockdale have developed into superstars at international level. Porter is an excellent backup to Tadhg Furlong. The majority of the 23 have gone to at least become squad members amongst the provinces.

Can someone else fill in the gaps above?
