The difference this year in the amount of ways we can win games is crazy compared to previous seasons.

in the last 10 days we've seen an deep injury time comedy winner, a battling come from behind victory, a 0-4 tonking and a backs to the wall 1-0, skin of our teeth nail-bitter.

Backs to the wall? What game were you watching last night? Napoli had one excellent chance at the death, other than that they had two shots on target and I think they were both tame shots from outside the box.

To be honest at this stage we could just have Allison, Robbo and Virgil as the defence and the rest can go forward and we'd be fine.

I'd pay good money to watch a team of Andy Robertsons take on a team of Virgil Van Dijks.

I have a feeling we will try play for the 1-0 tonight, and the more I think of it, I think that is the best option, for a couple of reasons.

    1) Napoli are top scorers in the Serie A. If we go all out attack and try and blow them away and win 3-0, it turns the game into a higher risk game and runs the risk of conceding 1 or 2 and needing to score 3, 4 or more goals. Napoli have the ability to create chances and score goals. The ability to have a whole team playing for a 1-0 will help cover any brain farts from Lovren/Matip (Hendo / Gini / Milner screening) as opposed to a helter-skelter game where they will get exposed more easily.

    2) Napoli also have one of the best CBs around in Kouliably. Do we really want to turn the game into a you-score-we-score game and backing ourselves to score past him, and an Italian team multiple times?

    3) Energy - we have a big game at the weekend and will need to have that extra 5% in the locker to break down a deep defensive United team.

    4) Since VVD & Alisson have come in, we have the ability to see out games at 1-0, while still having the ability to nick one later on the counter attack.

Never in doubt lads & lasses  ;)

I'm actually delighted for Spurs, for them to come through that group after such a bad start is very close to a miracle.

I didn't look at the odds for tonight but a double with ourselves and Spurs might of been a nice double.

Liverpool were 4/6 to win and Spurs were 13/8 to win, Spurs would have been less to qualify. Wouldn't have been a big price double.

We were back to the wall for a ten minute period around the 70th minute.

The only time Napoli looked dangerous was when they caught us on the break. Leaving aside we gave up a gilt edged chance at the death they never looked like scoring when we let them come on to us. Liverpool on the other hand had (at least near the end) 25 scoring opportunities, some of these were 1/2 chances but others should have been converted. This happens but you wouldn't be confident if you were playing them next.

The tension of the result and the ridiculous tv commentary heightened the anxiety and may have lead you to believe otherwise.

Essentially we'll gave to beat the good teams to win it anyhow, but there is still definitely an order of who we'd want to play from the teams we can draw in the next round. Here is my preference, although I await the scornful (I don't care who we get, they should be afraid of us type pointless replies)

    Porto
Ajax (unlikely they will top the group but they can)
Lyon (unlikely they will top the group but they can)
This is where it starts to get really crappy and hard to choose....
    Real Madrid
    Dortmund
Bayern Munich (who I know are behind Dortmund in the league, but still)
    Barcelona
    Juventus

Very little between the bottom 5 above really, just slight personal opinion on who we'd have the best chance of beating, although we would have a decent chance against any of them.

All huff and puff. In those 10 minutes but teams gave the ball away a lot and attacked with the defenders coming out on top.

In the big games Hendo's work is noticed - its actually the smaller games where we have buckets of possession and he needs to be more of a playmaker than holding Mid that he looks out of place at times. Huge expectation on him too.

Yeah it's a pity we didn't go for someone like Maddison in the summer. He offers a bit more forward looking creativity than Hendo and could've alternated nicely with him.

Keep away from Barcerlona ,and Juve and we will be fine

Midfield wise we "lost" for want of a better word Coutinho and Can. We brought in Ox, Fabinho and Keita.
Hendo, Wij, Milner and Lallana are also in the matchday squad unless injured.
A squad is always a work in progress but I don't think we could have done much more in recent windows.

Also, I reckon Keita might provide the more forward looking creativity than Hendo that you mention, I reckon that's one of the attributes why he was bought really.

There's 2 types of creative Mid one that sits in front of back 4 like Jorginho and ones that site in behind the striker like Coutinho/Erickson - we play neither :D - instead we have the option of Kieta as an attacking playmaking mid. Maybe why we also play Shaq in there somewhere too.

Klopp seems to like the holding Mid type which was why we bought Fabinho - all that was left was the buy a creative type which would have been Fekir.

Hopefully we have a plan B for a Fekir type in the Jan transfer market.

    Here's a stat for you lads -

Liverpool scored more goals against Allison in two games last season than 16 premier league teams have managed this season to date against him.

Just thinking of the VVD challenge. Obviously rival fans are convinced it should have been a red while we, as usual, hold a more balanced view. I would say however Sean Dyche will have fun if he's asked about it at his next press conference.

Surprised they have time - they need to fill the tanks of their Triple Decker bus for Sunday ... it's basically their best chance of the year to spoil our party. Fingers crossed we turn in a performance like last nights!

They were very quiet when Bradsley did the same thing to the cube last week, in fact that was worse as Bradsley did not even win the ball, and a free kick was not even awarded :pac:

Has De Laurentis been on saying we should be kicked out of the CL yet?

The RTE lads were commentating on a different game, they started going on about tired forwards at one stage and then we had 3 counter attacks with decent chances in about 5mins

Happy to see that the United game is not till Sunday, with injuries and the team looking ran out after 97minutes last night they will need the chance to recover. Did the injury time seem a lot to anyone else last night? No injuries as such and 3min (I think) in the first half and 4 in the second seems to be more than you would have in a pl game.

I think a big issue was that in real time, the ref appeared to wave play on, then stop and go back to it. Perfectly entitled to do so, of course, but it meant that people in the stadium, commentary and most fans had already made a split decision on it. For a lot of people that was "great tackle, van Dijk is a boss!" but the replay showed contact that didn't seem clear the first time around.

For what it's worth, I reckon a yellow is probably fine and if the ref had blown up immediately and booked him, people wouldn't be debating it a day later.

Also, for what it's worth, the ref had a stinker last night. Called an absolute heap of nothing challenges, dished out yellow cards for fun and really seemed intent on not letting the game flow at all. Both sides got some soft decisions against them I think.

The lad Virgil tackled accounted for most of that 3 mins I imagine.
There were a few incidents in the 2nd half, not hard to rack up 4 mins stoppage time to go with the 30 seconds for each substitution.
I don't think the ref added on anything that was unjustified tbh.

yeah I made the same point somewhere else, it's what annoyed me. It looked like a fine tackle the ref belted up the pitch then turned round and booked him. My outrage only lasted till the reply. The ref got some things right but others horribly wrong.

    Top of the league.
    Unbeaten.
    Top scorer in the league.
    Best defence in the league.
Through to the last 16 of the CL.

Pretty nice place to be as a Liverpool fan right now.

3 mins was for the treatment after VVD tackle.

I was expecting more than 4 from that ref last night at the end of the game

Remember when people used to say stupid things like
Salah is a one season wonder.
    VVD isn't worth that much.
    Liverpool overpaying for Allison.
    Klopp can't organise a defence.
    Klopp has no plan B.
Liverpool can't breakdown teams that sit back.

And does anyone remember that lad that said he preferred Rashford to Salah?
