Purely going on how I felt when I saw it, and how it affected me.

surely the opening scene in jaws no? it has everything, it's amazing but again a question of taste, for me it wins hands down. second would be the alex kitner on the raft scene, how the camera pulls brody into view and the gurgling and blood etc. I remember being about 8yrs old and feeling physically ill seeing that.
    That's one bad hat harry!

there's loads of movies with great scenes of beauty and dialogue etc but for what it was, Jaws gets it, even on Theme alone.

    I'll raise the OUATITW opening scene with one of the last scenes;

The problem with Jaws is which scene do you pick. It's such a great movie.

Even the dialogue is a lesson in compactness. The scene where Brody get's introduced where he wakes up and his wife is still snoozing in bed.

"How come the sun didn't used to shine in here?"
"We moved here in the fall, this is summer...the kids up?"
"They must be in the back yard"
    "In Amity, you say 'yahd'"
"The kids are in the yahd...not too fah...from the cah...how does that sound?"
    "Like you're from New York"

So much is conveyed in short order. They're a family just recently moved from New York, they're not quite settled yet and not sure about how they're going to settle in with the locals but it doesn't matter, it's clear it doesn't bother them as they both clearly love each other with the playful banter.

    Goodfellas again:
The one where they are in Joe Pesci's Mam's kitchen, on the way to bury the body - the story she tells about the guy who never talks:

When Jack Nicholson attacks Nurse Ratched in One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. Very satisfying.

yes it's why it's my favourite film of all time and I cannot see it being beat!
like you say, some of the seminal scenes need not even be mentioned, it's that good. "Now you take a look at that sign, those proportions are correct"!

I read the book twice too and much prefer the movie, which is an exception to the rule...so is Shawshank in that regard.

Greatest movie scene ever? Absolutely not, but in terms of recent movies I've watched, this scene is pretty awesome!! and I'm not afraid to admit I've watched it more than a few times.

I think the Avengers theme music is going to up there with the Indiana Jones theme for me to be honest.

    Good will hunting. Any scene.
    /thread

God, no. It’s very watchable with a few funny bits but on further inspection is a big pile of shïte. Very watchable shïte. But shïte all the same. The “It’s not your fault” scene with Damon and Williams is toe-curlingly cringeworthy. I can’t watch it. My favourite acting performance in the film is actually Stellan Skarsgård’s. He nails the slightly arrogant, skirt-chasing professor. But other than that... meh.

The good the bad and the ugly graveyard scene and also the scene in mean streets where De Niro and Harvey Keitel are talking in the back of the bar about the money that went missing, I think that the dialogue was improvised on the spot. I also loved the battle scene at the end of district 9 when he's in the Big alien mech thing, ****ing epic. I remember seeing that movie the night before I went to see Avatar and afterwards I was like to my brother and cousin let me show you a real movie.

From a lesser known Kubrick movie, the final duel scene from Barry Lyndon. So much tension, ratcheted up by the deliberate slow pace of the scene and the ominous music. I love the little touches like the non-duellists inching backwards to avoid any wayward shots. Also the conclusion is devastating:

Earlier in the movie there is a more traditional style of duel where both men fire simultaneously. I don't think it's explained why the different set of rules for the later duel, but it is a seriously terrifying idea, just standing there while your opponent takes his shot (even if, as the scene makes clear, the weapons are unreliable and inaccurate).

I could fill this thread with scenes from Kubrick films - pretty much every scene in Doctor Strangelove is memorable.

The tension at the beginning of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

Mark Strong is sitting in the Budapest cafe with the 'double agent'. He knows after a minute that something is wrong. The waiter is sweating. The locals seem scared.

The opening scene of Inglourious. Hans Landa is toying with Monsieur La Perdite.

Of course the movies are just huge big CGI fests, but they are entertaining, and I still think this scene is bloody great, and tied in with that score.....

That's great alright, I'd arguably put the "what are you the God of again?" scene in Thor: Ragnarok ahead of it.
Put Thor on a different level entirely. Pilgrim Song FTW.

Every scene is like a painting in that film it's actually too much to take in at times

Completely agree, it does not get better than this. Once Upon A time in the West has many extraordinary scenes (Opening scene, Frank and his gang killing the family, Jill arriving in Flagstone, The Tavern, Frank killing the assassins in Flagstone with Harmonica's help) but this one trumps them all.

Almost every scene in Once Upon A Time in the West is masterful, come to think of it.

One that sticks in my mind is the final scene for the father in Life Is Beautiful, where he does a funny march for his hidden son, to make it seem like the final elimination is part of a game.

    Omg the feels:(

Schindliers List - Girl in the red dress scene.

Shawshank Redemption - Warden, Hadley, Red realise Andy escaped through tunnel in cell after chess piece goes through poster OR Andy crawling out of sewer pipe to freedom.

Full Metal Jacket - Pyle killing Gunnery Seargent Hartman in the toilets then killing himself.

Avengers - Tony Stark/Ironman redirecting tesseract powered nuke into spacial vortex to destroy invading army.

300 Rise of an Empire - Opening scene with Themistocles leading Athenians in shock combat against Persians on beach before they can establish camp. (Musicical score Marathon is epic)

    "we'll always have Paris".....

but the master of all..."If she can stand it I can!!"

one scene that has a few bits still in common use today

    "Play it Sam"
"Of all the gin joints" etc

Some great scenes. this might not be he greatest but it must surely be the most recreated scene in movie history. Pretty much every bloke has looked in the mirror after watching Taxi Driver and uttered the words - "You talkin' to me.."

As a scene it really shows how Travis is battling with himself and his delusion is turning to action.

I saw that movie in Chicago and the audience went absolutely bananas at that moment. Definitely added to the enjoyment.

If you enjoyed Kill Bill, make sure you look at a Japanese Samurai film called 'Harakiri' the black and white one from 1962, there's a fantastic scene in that,
The 'top knot' scene, when everyone realises who the guy telling the story is and now everyone is going to get killed by him
really really brilliant. If you are into revenge drama and tension build of any sort, watch this great film

Gene Wilder's scene at the end of Willy Wonka and Chocolate Factory when he goes mental at Grandpa Joe and Charlie in his office. One scene always stood with me don't know why fine piece of acting.

another one for me in terms of how it made me feel.....

The opening Krypton scene in superman 1. Still amazing to watch! GUILTY!! GULITY!! the music is amazing in and of itself. I just can't fault it.

My other favorite small moment is when the fishermen are all gathered on the peer causing complete mayhem due to Mrs Kintner's handsome bounty for the shark. Brody is in the hut on the phone stressed out of his head trying to call in back up to deal with the influx and he spots deputy Hendricks outside standing there like an absolute eejit taking it all in. He grabs some trash and flings it at the window to get his attention so he can help him out but Hendricks responds with a dopey wave at Brody completely oblivious to what's going on. That always cracks me up :D

Either of the final two fight scenes in The Raid or The Raid 2.

    Ridiculous camera work and choreography.
