Clearly shows how out of step AH is with broad public sentiment. You'd swear Casey had it in the bag with everyone congratulating each other for voting for him and exclaiming how everyone and their dog was leaving the voting station having voted for him.

From 1% to now,b can't knock that in fairness.

The reason I don't think they'll be able to get away from this is because we will be having a general election hot on the heels of this, probably next Summer. Dealing with Travellers will form a significant part of the debate.

PC managed to take +19% by taking only a mildly critical line on Travellers. Those that voted for him, this was all that mattered. It's too big to ignore, and it's an open goal for whatever party that moves into that space.

21% translates into 33 dail seats. This is not going away.

He is also a very poor orator and had no command of his brief really. Imagine what might have happened if someone really on his game had ran with the Casey line.

    Ya?

    Will ya ?

Jaysis man, did you hit the Supervalu and get the 24 cans for 20€ and drink them all or something? Firstly I am in Dublin...

I never said they were a fg mouthpiece,
But the rte organisation is a mouthpiece for the government of the Day,

What I actually said was all the broadcasters in rte are preachy liberals,
Who are insolated from the agenda they push

On the other hand, the Aras doesn't matter a damn so people are more likely to go with a protest vote for that. But, even so..

20%+ in a little over a week, with no serious money behind him, while being hounded by the media and falsely labelled a racist...
    Not bad i'd say.

I think he'll poll closer to 30% when all is said and done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 34,188 ✭✭✭✭listermint

Never expected him to win but if the exit poll translates correctly a strong message has been sent to the leftie media who only last week wanted him to step down

As for knowing nothing about him
I have met him and spoken with him.

But go ahead now and enlighten us all to exactly how travellers have contributed to Irish society.. Apart from abusing animals and having no value for education. And I could give you lots of examples of both. About time a spade was called a spade.

I'd like you to explain to me in detail where I've defended travellers at all. Details please.

You and anyone that voted for Mr chancer were taken in my comments he made that he has no power to do anything about never had the office of the president doesn't either and as soon as he got in the door you'd never hear about the travellers again out of him.

So you'd be ****ing a vote down a bowling alley after a two bit businessman who only ever wanted a handy number a nice big salary and an increase in his personal profile.

    Well done you. Woooooo

If that translates to the proper vote, its still a very good showing for casey.

While all the status quo loveys will be cheering and smiling about the static victory in a wildly shifting society, they'll secretly be sh*tting bricks, knowing what way the wind is blowing now.

    Tick tock.

The status quo? Really have no idea what you are on about. Michael D Higgins has a proven track record of opposing the status quo and fighting for equal rights in this country. See his opposition to the original 8th amendment that nearly cost him his political career precisely because he went against the status quo. The man has respresented Irish people practically his whole life.

Casey spouts a couple of lines about welfare state etc and suddenly hes the rebel against the system? The man who has benefited from it in his business dealings? And the actual public servant becomes the status quo?

Just staggering. This is exactly how Donald Trump, a multi millionaire built on inherited wealth, can somehow convince people he is against the 'elites'. Truly scary how easily people are swayed against basic logic.

Basic logic? Try this for basic logic. Peter Casey said travellers should get equality, not special treatment and was called a racist and bigot. He was shouted down by almost the entire media and political establishment in an attempt to silence him.it was this attempt to silence him that added to his polularity in the end. I couldn't give a ****e about Casey but it's becoming evident that dialoge against special interest lobby groups and hoping that people be held responsible for their actions in this country is now seen as offensive and behaviour that needs to be controlled rather than acknowledged.

Michael D might have had humble and honorable beginings but he's strayed far from that in my eyes. He doesn't represent the humble PAYE worker.

People who voted for that man based solely off his traveller statement should have a think about the effect of their vote and what you have contributed to starting.

I don't even think your man meant, or thought about, it. I think he just blurted out random crap without realizing it and then ran with it.

It's all grand to be the hard internet warriors online but will we see an avalanche of similar chancers making populist statements in upcoming elections. Why get bother getting involved with local politics, contributing to your community and working your way up as you gain experience when you can just try to catapult into the limelight with some populist statements. What will it be the next time? "The lazy africans", "the job-stealing poles", "the invading muslims"?

The ironic thing is that the same playbook is what drives the likes of yer wan Cash to the front pages moaning about "de guvvermint robbin' us all".

Jesus lad, take it easy. Just because someone votes/voted to a different persuasion than yours is no reason to be calling them cúnts. Chill out.
That's what they think of you. You are an uneducated, hateful fool, or just a plain old c*nt for not thinking "correctly".This is the mentality that is clinging to this country like gangrene. Time is fast running out for these deluded, elitist, dictatorial people. And they know it. Expect them to become yet further deranged and loose-lipped as their ideology dies off.Tick tock
do you think that your post quoted above comes across as reasonable? the kind of sentiment or expression of rational thought that youd be proud to put yr name to in real life?theres a reason that internet discourse lowers to the level that has one poster labelling 21% of the country cúnts, but tbh the way you're happy to lazily froth at the mouth in your response is indicative of the same flaws.but lookit, higgins in a landslide and enjoy the 1 in 5 vote.

Unfortunately it will be easy to ignore. Saint Miggeldy has been voted back in and that's all that matters.

The issues highlighted and discussed by Casey, even in the heat of the moment didn't go beyond pushing them under the rug whilst rolling eyes at the "stupid bigot" Casey. There won't be a post mortem on this one and even if there was we know how it will play out. NOT ALL, NOT ALL etc. etc.

The only journalist that has taking their head out of their a*re on the traveller debate has been Pat Kenny for his NT show. When he (upon invite) visited a halting site he really called is black and white. "Why is there rubbish everywhere?", "The council won't come because of violence towards them?", "There has been fueding with rival travellers here?", "Are the kids no in school?" and the rest.

    would you stop.

21% translates to zero presidential seats.

ffs lads. a handful of candidates and second polls 21% i mean jesus its actually hugely improbable that whoever finished second could actually have polled much lower!

if it had been anyone else the same posters would be here with a ready-made spin, oh gallagher got 20% the ppl have spoken oh SF got 20% watch out leo! oh duffy got 20% EAT THE POOR!

the bang of desperation off ye. can ye not just face up that the vast majority of ppl bothered to vote said no to every one of the alternative options offered? the groundswell didn't happen. the rabblerousers are only shouting at each other. the revolution was televised and nobody joined in.

    let it go lads.

One of the things Casey said was that he would like to represent the "squeezed middle" that maligned group that are taxed and have zero benefits and are unable to get the tax breaks that the better off can obtain. These are the people who see disproportionately amounts of money being spent on certain groups who can sometimes end up better off than they are, despite being in a decent job with (sort of) decent pay.

See. You have nothing to back up your hatred of PC. You attack him for his views on travellers, yet you cannot even give one positive contribution they make to society.

At least the man has the balls to say it like it is.

    You are shockingly self delusional

Indeed, if he was as charismatic as a Farage type character and had a good follow up to the Traveller remarks (I think he only stumbled onto the gold mine -there was no plan) he would have given MDH a better run.

I personally didn't got for him down to his poor oration and command of the brief.

However, I don't see him or his type being allowed to run again. The councils will be whipped next time.

You're saying that as if MDH isn't a multi millionaire public persona with more paychecks than he knows what to do with.

Besides, all current candidates are full of populist statements. Increase social welfare, more jobs, 5 point plans and a lot done more to do, all vacuous statements designed to woo voters. Nothing new there.

Ok I'm putting it out there, I'm living in a rural part of Co Limerick, I voted number one Peter Casey just because we've be tormented with rural crime the majority of which is due to our ethnic minority, I was in our local pub tonight and everyone there voted for Peter Casey

    Well Done Casey.

It's a paper thin 20% though, built on a protest vote. He might feel he can run for proper elected office now. Let's see how well he gets on if he has to enunciate policy positions he'd actually have to stand over and even try to deliver.

He said 2 things that resonate with people, both responsible for his showing.

One was about travellers and the other was the welfare state that Ireland has become.

Neither of them belonged in an arena that was voting for a President. They do in an general election though. And we will have one of those come February, mark my words. Spin doctors wont have missed what galloping horses didn't.
