Sinn Fein hammered by unknown businessman Peter Casey. Back to the drawing board, I guess playing the woman card isn't enough for voters. Maybe some of the liberal nutjobs in Sinn Fein might STFU for once. But likely not.

You don't get a pat on the back from me. Your a muppet. Don't waste my money on some plank who will represent my country in a manner that is not fitting to the nation.

    No thanks. Never

Whatever you can say about PC, at least he went out there and made something of his life.

Rather than leeching off the state and expecting everything for nothing.

Based on the results of the exit poll at least, I think you're the muppet my friend.

I have my doubts on your sentiment but the did ask only 3400 odd people, given how many polling stations there are...you'd wonder.

nice. classy. there will be no dialogue my thoughts are better than urs eh?

These lot here only care about 'classiness' when you lose. Before that you're slinging all the muck you can find. Says it all.

Same thing with "PC gone mad" - then suddenly they're crowing about 'sore winners' and people being offensive.

    Lap it up yis.

    I'm not a Mickey D supporter.

I'm not an anyone supporter .

I appreciate the country we live in and can spot a chancer a mile off.

People fall for Casey's guff then that's on them. Don't call people liberals for calling a 2 bit business man a chancer.

    He's a snake oil salesman.

Have him run for he dail if he wants to effect anything. And sure all the posters in here can canvas for him

    I dare ya.

    Jesus lad, take it easy.

Just because someone votes/voted to a different persuasion than yours is no reason to be calling them cúnts.

    Chill out.

That's what they think of you. You are an uneducated, hateful fool, or just a plain old c*nt for not thinking "correctly".

This is the mentality that is clinging to this country like gangrene. Time is fast running out for these deluded, elitist, dictatorial people. And they know it. Expect them to become yet further deranged and loose-lipped as their ideology dies off.

    Tick tock

Clearly shows how out of step AH is with broad public sentiment. You'd swear Casey had it in the bag with everyone congratulating each other for voting for him and exclaiming how everyone and their dog was leaving the voting station having voted for him.

Clearly you simply do not get it. Only the extremely foolish thought Casey was going to win, and these were very much in the minority here. Most accepted that the pompous poet was going to be returned again, but that that wouldn't be a part of it, and they wanted to make a statement with their vote.

Least we forget, Casey has managed to poll +19% and move from last to second by way of only one short statement in relation to Travellers. He didn't retract it nor did he double down and list BS that many in that community inflict on the rest of us. Just that they should be treated equally, not better nor worse than the rest of us.

I wonder what difference it would have made if there was a poll a few days ago that showed the huge momentum behind Casey... It definitely would have made the conversation more interesting.

(I voted for Duffy btw, before someone says I'm some sort of hard-on for Casey, who didn't get a preference from me)

You see, all your efforts will only turn those against the left.... Who in by-gone years advocated free speech (but now you/far left advocate free speech so long as it suits your own agenda).
Peter Casey representing a threat to you is hypocrisy on your part... He's a man who wants to stand up for the rights of the squeezed middle, and move away from mediocrity in performance, sentencing and enforcement. Casey is also a highly successful businessman have you forgotten.

I admire and voted for MDH as the best candidate for Irish president but how f**kin dare you belittle the voice of those who provide for this country. Casey as my #2 means I'd vote for him in governmental elections, where power matters.

I bottled it, went MD after thinking about it all day, I knew he was a safe set of hands, if after 7 years if all that came out over the last week or two that to me is minimal, then I was half thinking to stick it to FG/FF, I'm now a little angry I didn't follow thru with my protest vote, I am a bottler.

If that translates to the proper vote, its still a very good showing for casey.

While all the status quo loveys will be cheering and smiling about the static victory in a wildly shifting society, they'll secretly be sh*tting bricks, knowing what way the wind is blowing now.

    Tick tock.

The status quo? Really have no idea what you are on about. Michael D Higgins has a proven track record of opposing the status quo and fighting for equal rights in this country. See his opposition to the original 8th amendment that nearly cost him his political career precisely because he went against the status quo. The man has respresented Irish people practically his whole life.

Casey spouts a couple of lines about welfare state etc and suddenly hes the rebel against the system? The man who has benefited from it in his business dealings? And the actual public servant becomes the status quo?

Just staggering. This is exactly how Donald Trump, a multi millionaire built on inherited wealth, can somehow convince people he is against the 'elites'. Truly scary how easily people are swayed against basic logic.

He is a winner from this also going from 2 to 20% in a week is fairly remarkable and will be interesting to see how the media portrays his performance and why his vote was fairly large

It was mainly the low turnout. The election does't mean much to peoples lives. And there's something I like to think of as the customer support rule. People only call a call centre when something's wrong or they're angry. In this case there was a low turnout because no-one cared. Plus a lot of people were ok with the status quo and thought that MDH would just be reelected. People who did care enough to vote were people who were angry like Casey's voters, or people who felt a duty to vote or a some who genuinely liked one of the candidates.

Casey won a large percentage of voters, but it's worth remembering that there were loads who didn't vote at all. And although he's probably got 20% of votes counted, the number of the electorate who support him is far less than 20%.

I don't understand this post, who would the prick or gob****e be handing over your money?

    What pat on the back?

Who's expecting that, and who is supposedly giving them out?

Ave you been on the devils buttermilk by any chance?

Looks like I'll be collecting €650+ from PP, so I'm happy out either way.

Obviously MDH winningbis the biggest story in this. Gaining a second term is a great achievement and let’s face it is the only man for the office.

However if you think Casey getting over 20% and moving up 19% in a week isn’t a big story then your away with the fairies.
