Beggars belief the amount of people here voting for Casey "not because I want him to win but to give 2 fingers to the establishment/cream crackers/rattle the politicians" etc. The same thing we heard so many British voters saying after the Brexit referendum. I don't understand the logic of playing with votes like that. Really really crazy stuff

Some speculation here: As Paddy Power do lots of work with Red C and Red C are currently doing an exit poll for RTÉ, it wouldn't surprise me if PP have got inside information that is causing them to offer "cash outs".

Brave man I would have cashed out I'd say.

    i'd have stuck it out
    hope he wins

it's still not too late to vote :D

    Nope.
2% was the last poll number that I saw on RTE for Peter Casey.

RTE is the most biased anti-worker liberal media outlet in the country.

I believe their disdain for the tax payer

Strangely I believe everyone working in RTE is tax payer.

Just home after one hell of a long day (left home at 0645), but cast my votes in the local community centre 10 mins ago.

    Casey 1
    LNR 2
    Duffy 3
Seems weird to me, I'm a fairly left of centre kind of lad, and boards seems to think a vote for Casey is a right wing vote (even an alt right **shudders**).

I've asked and no one has ever yet given me a straight answer. What's right wing about a call for equality?

Casey got my vote because I genuinely felt he was the best candidate there, LNR was close second to him, and only on the last debate (the one Higgins didn't line out for) I thought Duffy came across well (well better than the other two).

Higgins came across terribly in the debate, nd I couldn't help get the feeling that he felt a wee bit regal in comparison with his fellow candidates, like he actually resented having to answer to them.

I also got the feeling he's passed it.

    Anyway, what's done is done.

    Not long to go now.

Do Travellers and Life Dole people vote?

Maybe they do, but why would they bother? Everything is handed to them anyway.

Need a voting allowance, to go with fuel allowance, back to school allowance, Christmas bonus etc.
    Every little helps.

But sure really, what option do we have? anything would be a bit more exciting than 7 years of silence from Miggeldy, it's nice to hear someone sticking up for us, instead of 'act like a total scumbag and we shall all still be equal' unfortunately its come to this

    It's called a protest vote.

It is not like voting for Brexit, not remotely close.
It is not voting for a new Taoiseach.

It is a protest vote, for a benign political office. It is probably the best type of election for such a thing because of the benign nature of the office!

It isn't in the slightest bit crazy.

If youre in car and the driver is going to 100% drive off a cliff, you'd sooner take youre ridiculous chances and put a bloody cat in the driving seat. At least it MIGHT do something different.

This is all the result of a political vacuum with zero choice. It gets dangerous.

the president's vote is kinda a free vote...
if we are wrong on him , at worst we'll get a few PR gaffes while an actual GE or referendum on Brexit requires some deeper thought as the consequences are greater.

Now I'll say , giving Leo and the media a kick in the hole is a feature of pleasure for me but it's a distant second on the list. I voted for Casey because what he said resonated with me and I kinda his unpolished style ...no school of brainwashing with terry prone for him.

Presidency doesn't even make the headlines after the ads. Shower of cnuts.

Pull your knickers out of your ass, it was the main 6.1 news story.

Just been down to vote, and it's a number 1 for Peter Casey from me.

Sick of the liberal lefties bending over backwards for people who contribute nothing to society. Rte and the Irish Times no longer represent the views of a majority of hard-working people.

when god emperor casey takes power the first thing he should do is go down to rte and give 75% of them their p45s

Ireland and AH was a bit more lefty back then I reckon. I actually voted for McGuinness back then, but am disgusted by Sinn Fein these days. Interesting to see how they will react if they have a terrible result.

Should of been Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin. But he was too old, too male and too white for the new Sinn Féin leadership.

If Casey doesn't win can I use the poll here to claim my winnings in the bookies?

What do you know about Casey outside of his opinion on travellers and social welfare?

I'm not in disagreement with the guys opinions on both however I don't know enough about the guy to place any level of trust in him - even as a protest vote.

quite simply this is a Brexit style protest vote with zero consequences as the role of president is purely ceremonial in ireland.

    What politician do you trust?

He said what needed to be said and didn't back down when the vipers went for him

For that he gets my vote

As much as you say it has no consequence. Sending a complete tool oversea has consequences

Anybody who doesn't agree that they are Irish by definition does not want them to be treated equally. They want to set them up as a minority, and it suits them being in the position that they are in because otherwise they wouldn't have a minority to champion.

Equality (and meritocracy) are racist traits these days. You can't just treat a minority person as an equal, no, you have to consider the privilege of the majority when dealing with minorities.

Yes he did win! The competition was to get 270 electoral college votes and he reached that target with plenty of room to spare.
