It must be tense for him meeting that other scion of the Higgins family socialist dynasty, Michael D Higgins’ daughter Senator Alice Mary Higgins, in the senate. This sort of nepotism is the type of thing Michael D railed against in the past.

I don’t think a young Michael D would vote for the politician he has become.

If the likes of Michael D Higgins ever managed to hold the levers of 'real power' say in a majority government, he would have become just like his socialist heroes, Castro and Ortega.

Now that is an interesting suggestion.
We might have been the Cuba of Europe.
What a lucky escape we had and all we had to do was vote.

She was elected to the Seanad, how is that nepotism?

Well elected to the Seanad is a bit of a contest in terms of a democratic process. First she had to be put on the ticket. Do you think having the ex president of the Labour Party and current president of the country gave her any advantage over a candidate who’s daddy wasn’t president?
But of course Raul was elected after his brother Fidel also. A socialist royal family.

Yep extra-judicial killings, murdered for your sexuality, 'disappeared' and never getting the opportunity to vote again.
    Wonderful!

Yeah. That's exactly what would have happened if Labour had ended up in government while Michael D was party leader.

    Well you said it.
This is a discussion and I find being helpful usually is better.

Yeah. That's exactly what would have happened if Labour had ended up in government while Michael D was party leader.

Michael D Higgins was never leader of the Labour Party.

Perhaps put a cap in place for future bookings.

You seem to be a bit confused. Are you thinking about another person, or another party, or another country?

Because these visions you're having have nothing to do with Michael D Higgins.

And even if it did cost €3k, no-one has any proof that Higgins had any role in choosing the hotel.

I read this in the voice of a Scooby Doo villain for some reason.... do you happen to have a small wiry moustache by any chance :D?

Are we so pathetic that we'd expect our president to sleep in some cheap place to save the country money?

He's our president and as such should be able to booked into something other than a hostel.

This type of nitpicking by the other candidates or their followers is a sign of how little they have to offer voters.

I’d expect him not to be trying to meet child-raping, citizen murdering dictators on the Irish dime, even if they are old friends. Couldn’t meet him because of a scheduling clash in 2013, but stated that “Nicaragua is for the future.” So I’m sure he’ll get a nice state funded trip this time if he wins.

Good point any cap would need to be location specific.

Even at that I have been to Geneva and 3k is expensive even there.

I was just trying to find a middle ground between entirely endorsing profligate spending and sending MDH to a hostel.

I wonder if his special advisor got a €3k room, perhaps they bunked up together to save money?

I read in the Daily Sunmail that Michael D had a number of "lavish meals" over the past 7 years as well.

Geneva in the winter could be cold enough, bit of spooning would help a lot!
And save the hard pressed taxpayer!

Who amongst the 6 candidates is the only one to have taken a voluntary pay-cut?

It would need to be location specific, time of year specific, day of week specific, is-there-a-rolling-stones-gig-in-town-tonight specific and everything else specific, given the current methods used by hotels to set their pricing.

I think what you need is a sensible process as used in all public sector procurements - set out requirements, and find the provider that can meet the requirements at the best price.

Which could well be what happened in Geneva, who knows?

    Pay cut in what?

Only MickyD has been president of the 6 thus far, you realise that, right?

A pay cut at any time in any of their jobs

Michael D being painted here as a money-grabber but he's the only one who has ever taken a voluntary pay-cut

Gavin Duffy, doesn't want any pay for the gig.

It's funny how you're hugely concerned by the €3k hotel bill, but not by the €20+ million bill for a pointless election, thanks to SF, some dodgy council decisions and the spoofer Craughwell.

MDH promised he was a one term president

his words aren't worth a sh1te, if he stood down like he was supposed to we would have proper candidates running not this **** show we have now

furthermore he is going to be 84 IF he makes it through the next 7 years

He has never taken a pay cut.

Says he will IF he wins.

(Casey says he won't have a driver! Yeah sure!)

Well 3 of them are entrepreneurs, I'd imagine some of them took voluntary pay cuts in their salary expectations during the start up phases of at least some of their businesses?

It's a question I don't think anyone here could honestly answer tbh
    .

Need to put a bit more thought into that one.
