No one is saying he's having an affair with the florist.

The problem is that he isn't providing any explanation for why he or Sabina needs a florist as part of his entourage.

Just another to add to the bizarre unexplained staffing decisions and relationships to add to the list

Why should he explain it to us? They’re his staff, he can have whom he likes and do with them what he likes.

    What a fcuking hypocrite.
Condemns others for not paying taxes and having an "entitlement culture" while choosing not to pay tax in Ireland himself.

Yes but what does he claim off the the state for free like our spongers here?

Why is it that when someone does well for themselves they are assumed to be milking it or screwing someone else?

Because even when the people of Galway decided that they didn’t want Moneybags D Higgins representing them, he was given cushy numbers in the Seanad. He hasn’t “done well for himself”, he’s a career politician. What has he achieved during his political career?? What’s his great contribution to Irish life??

Casey has “done well for himself” as a self made millionaire. He was also involved in the Good Friday Agreement.

Sure, if he's paying for her out of his own pocket, and doesn't have an official role.

But he's not paying, the state is. And if an individual is part of an official entourage we should know who they are and what their role is.

They’re his staff when it suits him. When there are difficult questions about expenses etc they are the staff of the office of the president.

The man has worked all his life as a high profile politician, in jobs that happen to pay well, do you think he should have given his wages away? As for what has he achieved in his career? Lots actually if you motivated yourself to look into it you would find that out for yourself but here's a short list for the googling impaired.

When I was in the LP, with Mickey D, it was deemed right to criticise and ridicule Bertie, when he paid for his make up etc.

All of a sudden now, its appropriate for Michael d to bring his florist along on state trips.

    Smacks of hypocrisy.

Look I think we’re all going to have to disagree here. Vote for whoever you want, that’s what a democracy is all about.

Just be sure you’re doing it for the right reasons and not because Peter Casey said one thing you agree with or Joan Freeman seems nice or because Michael D included his florist in his entourage and takes good care of his dogs or because you want to give the finger to the establishment.

The right to vote was hard won - don’t be frivolous with it or use as a protest.

Michael Higgins Twitter account really rubs me up the wrong way for no real reason.

It might be the fact it constantly quotes himself and has no input from the man himself . It's just another PR vehicle, wonder who pays for it

you, me and the rest of the Taxpayers!
At least Casey who doesnt pay Income Tax in the State in which he wishes to be President doesnt contribute to Michael D's excesses!

If he is doing his own yet constantly refers to himself in the third person, he has a serious ego problem :)

We’d be getting some return for his expenses though. His wages would be going back into the public purse. Not like Michael D Moneybags

Do you really believe that? Why should he be different than any other president in how he uses his expenses?

Absolutely, and they pay for it, and it annoys me with them as well.

His just seems to be all over my Twitter feed. Initially I thought it impressive a 77 year old was using twitter to engage with the public directly

Probably because of the election - I’d imagine you’ll see him at lot less once it’s over.

I hope it wouldn’t turn you off voting for him though.

I'm sure he has someone on it, but the president has many assistants, I don't think that'll change no matter who's president.
Casey has raised great questions, but some of the side suggestions behind the presidential expenses are ridiculous.
No president will or could be a one man show.
I don't think the savings any of them might make will be anything other than miniscule as regards to presidential expenses, thats just meaningless white noise.

Casey has “done well for himself” as a self made millionaire. He was also involved in the Good Friday Agreement.

Casey has referred to this several times. His "involvement" seems to have been going to a meeting in Washington DC once.

    I was already turned off

7 years is enough for anyone to achieve nothing in the role

Hell still walk it though, and then he can go back to doing nothing of note as president

I 100% believe it. The president should be an example for the people of the country. Not spending hundreds of thousands on frivolities during a massive recession.

Ah I was only joking about the expenses .But at the same time, the presidents staff should not be getting paid (by the taxpayer) to work on his campaign. I would imagine it comes from his campaign funds

Reminds me of something I had forgotten about in Casey's performance and the Trump and Twitter questioning.

Gosh, he really made a hames of last night.

If they are getting paid out of the presidential purse you can be damn sure it’s not Mickeys fault. That’ll be the staffs fault again.

The recession is over now. Just because you might be struggling doesn’t mean everyone has to.

He’s the president and like any other head of state has certain entitlements and privileges- why shouldn’t he use them?

Wouldn’t you in his position? Of course you would.

He’s a self proclaimed socialist, rambles on about the homeless etc.

Wouldn’t it be nice for him to cut back on unnecessary spending and set an example?

Aren’t people always crying for politicians to have their wages cut?

Why should he be any different?

He’s a big fat pension at the end of it all, he doesn’t need all these luxuries.

Just another one who has made millions off the taxpayer through the years while preaching the opposite.

A champagne socialist and nothing else.

    This is bad, very bad.
    Ireland is screwed.
Anyway I voted to abstain as all the candidates are bloody terrible.

He was president during the recession. Didn’t stop him throwing taxpayers money about.

His Xmas message last year was a mealy mouthed sop about homelessness with a big feast laid out behind him. Michael D is a very “do what I say, not what I do” politician.
