There's 2 years warranty on parts that you have paid for.

If the part is fitted to a car under warranty, the fitted part is covered until the end of the cars warranty.

I guess I'll post this here. The new turbo that was put in my Highline is quite loud in comparison to the broken one it replaced.

In the past I'd hear some quiet turbo whine at higher revs and with the bonnet open you'd hear a faint whoosh from the diverter valve when letting off. The new turbo is audibly sucking in air while accelerating normally, seems to be fluttering at times and I can also hear what seems to be it spinning, imagine if there was a small motor running when on boost and that noise is just there.

Is it normal for a turbo to be this loud? It seems like the sound is coming in the passenger air vent, almost as if it's missing some sound dampening or something but I don't believe this would be the case. Also am I right in saying that as this is a replacement turbo there's no warranty on this one if it goes? I'm a bit weary of the sounds it's making. I'm all for turbo noises, but the spinning noise is questionable and turbo flutter is a bad thing.

Doesn't sound right at all, I'd say they missed something when putting it all back together.
A smoke test to check for a boost leak would be a good idea.

Is the differential really necessary though? I don't accelerate through many turns on my commute so my driving is mostly straight roads. I've done 60kph on the 30kph M50 loops joining the motorway and I end up coming off the seat before the car would lose grip.

And the GTI have better tyres than my Turanza T001, which are great for standard driving.

I'm sure I'd appreciate it if I drove one, but it's a real kick in the balls to be eyeing a GTI then the price is suddenly €4k extra...

Considering the above why on earth would you want a fast car if as it seems you don’t seem to like driving?

Because I like driving and I don't live on a racetrack? I don't know about you but the vast majority of my driving is straight roads. I'm sure I'd appreciate a differential if I drove one but I don't need one coming off a straight slip road. And if I'm taking a tight turn at 60kph and can't go any faster because I'm coming off the seat then that's not down to the grip.

I'm not disputing the fact that a diff makes it better but not everyone drives the same way. That's like taking a Lotus Elise to a drag strip, the handling won't do you any good. Keep in mind the GTI isn't cheap, adding €3,000 to the price is a pretty big jump. Some of us would be happy to go without it. At that rate everyone might as well be driving a Clubsport. Wanting a standard GTI for cost reasons doesn't mean someone doesn't like driving.

Sorry Dave but I’m just not getting it. Surely the essence of a good hot hatch is the fact that is goes round corners better than other cars with similar straight line performance?

I had a standard non PP GTI and it was perfectly fine tbh. Traction at the front was poor in the wet but that improved a lot when I replaced the awful Bridgestone tyres.

Doubtless someone coming from a 1.0 TSI to a standard GTI would be more than impressed. If you never experienced the PP you wouldn’t “miss” it. Of course a PP is better but then the R is better than that again ;)

Would think the PP versions will be in more demand when the time comes to sell. You'd probably get a fair chunk of that 3k back over a standard GTI.

More in demand maybe but hopes of ever recouping money on any car / any extra spec on a trade in is wishful thinking.

A 3 year old non PP will be worth the same as a PP assuming same mileage so?

Well now that I think of it, PP is one of those unusual outliers, where VW have designated it as a separate higher model. So in pcp terms, it has a higher GFV. For any other options (including DSG), the GFV remains the same and you see precious little return on it on resale.

Therefore a PP would be worth a bit more on the trade alright.

I was in blackwater motors in cork yesterday and they had the following

    151 GTI €25k
    152 GTI PP €27K

So nothing in it really, assuming condition / miles on both were similar?

Apologies should of said the GTI has 32,000KM V GTI PP 68,000KM

There were no second hand R's in stock

New and in the showroom were mostly polos, T Roc, a golf van, tiguan, a sharan and a touareg

Does there be many 1-2 year old GTIs around or would it just be a demo model and the 3 year old PCP returns?

Have a look on carzone. There's loads of R's in particular. Not so many GTI's. Most of them are probably ex demo, pre-reg's and early PCP returns. There's a good few 181/182's pre-reg'd as VW had to reg them by end of September due to the WLTP thing.

I'd love this one, an upgrade to a 7.5 PP could be on the cards in a couple of years once they get into mid 20's price range

Seems to be serious value in newish UK GTD's, has anyone remapped one I'm reading good things. Has anyone drove both a GTi and remapped GTD.

I bought one two months ago and coming from a mapped Mk7 Fiesta ST (the thing was a little rocket) i'm really tempted to Revo it. If i was i'd buy the SPS switch as well so i could switch back to stock, they are supposed to go really well with a map. I wonder how the clutch/DMF would fair though, Daltons (revo agents) say they are strong enough but widespread failure has been reported on R models especially.

Just getting back to the turbo, here's some clips. Sorry if it's quiet, I don't have access to decent editing software to bump the sound up, might need some headphones.

Looking at some videos online I don't think it's turbo flutter as that happens coming off the accelerator and the turbo is clearly venting in the video. Also you can hear the turbo sucking in going up the hill, compared to the engine itself it's quite loud. The low revs have a bit more grunt to them too. I don't know why the new turbo would change that though.

That doesn't sound right. Have you had a look around under the bonnet. Any loose induction hoses or even open up the air box to see if the filter is missing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,685 ✭✭✭Muppet Man

That sounds like a hole in the exhaust... sorry Dave - doesnt sound right.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 252 ✭✭Hebegeebee

That definitely doesn’t sound right. And I agree with Senecio to look for loose hoses.
I had a similar problem to this years ago on my 307 where the main dealer failed to reconnect some air hoses properly around the turbo following a warranty clutch replacement and it made a right racket. I took it back to them and they sorted it, I wasn’t impressed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,194 ✭✭✭ondafly

doesn't sound right at all - get it straight back to them and have them sort it. It could be a hose or something lose, but you could spend an age trying to solve it. If you have a scantool , it might give you idea on where to look but I'd just leave it back to the garage at this point.

PS - be honest though - you were coming from Krispy Kreme at the start of the video !

Well I didn't have to look very far! Can anyone tell me what this is so I know what to say when booking it in?

The service is top notch down there. This is on top of them trying to charge me for the service despite giving them the paperwork for the service plan THREE times.

    That’s some level of incompetence

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,550 ✭✭✭JoeA3

    Jeeez.... that's piss poor!

It's your airbox that's disconnected. See that metal clamp on the pipe, thats supposed to hold it firmly in place. Sometimes they replace that clamp as it can get bent out of shape once its removed once.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,025 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

Just a jubilee clip stick it back on and tighten it up, probably just need a Philips screwdriver. Worth reporting to them but not losing you car for a few hours over.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,479 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

In the dealer now, only around the corner so not going to fiddle around with it. Car had flakes of pastry on the seats too, I guess they decided to have lunch rather than finish the job.

This is the last I want to see of this dealer until the next service.

Sorry, but did you mention the garage that this was with before? I'm not sure if I missed it previously, but if you're based around North/West Dublin, i'd like to know so I never look to use them for anything!
