name and shame if possible - or PM. I use Frank Keanes, I have to say they've been excellent with any VW work I've given them, can't speak for BMW though.

Frank Keane Liffey Valley. They have a reputation for not being as good as the other garages. My experience as a whole just hasn't been good.

Sorted now so hopefully that's the end of it.

FWIW, I had an absolutely appalling customer service experience in FK Liffeyvalley a few years ago. I've heard first hand reports from others having poor dealings with them too. I'd be very slow to darken their door again let alone let them service my car.

How long has it been making that sound? Not overly familiar with that engine but I would imagine you've been driving it with unfiltered air as that joint looks upstream of the filter. Probably no biggie and fine, but some debris could have easily made it into the engine.

My yoke is due a service at the end of the month. Not so confident using them now

I know I'll probably get the R is a different animal altogether, apples and oranges, 4 vs Fwd, 300bhp etc.. answers.
But R vs GTi with PP what would be the better buy for a 10k km per year daily driver? (2014/2015)

Is the R really worth ~5k more, extra tax, insurance and fuel?

I've owned both. My current car is an R and my previous was a GTI PP which I had for almost 3 years. Both are great cars. The power and traction the R has is incredible and it's the car I'd choose if you can live with the higher running costs. The R is the better car but no surprises there.

The GTI PP is a great car and the front diff really does it give it ridiculous levels of traction going around corners. You'll be happy with either one. Running costs-wise - besides initial outlay, there's really not a huge difference, yes the R is in a slightly higher tax bracket and is a bit thirstier but let's be honest, neither is the most economical car you could buy.

Headlight washer isn't working. Thought it might be air logged or something as the last time the low fluid light came on I used it a fair bit before filling so nothing was coming out of the headlights but the windscreen still had plenty of water.

Topped it up yesterday and more today, using it a couple of times hoping to get water flowing again but I just tested it there and they aren't popping out at all.

Water is leaking from under the engine so it's trying to work. When does it end?

I think the headlight washers only work every 10th time

They're supposed to work the first time with the lights on too. I can hear it pumping twice while the windscreen one is going, the there's a puddle under the car because it can't get to the headlights.

More than likely a hose off when they (your local useless dealer who left the air box outlet hose disconnected) did their other aforementioned fine work!!

The headlight washer pump sits higher than the windscreen washer pump so you don't waste your last litre or so on the headlights, but yeah water on ground suggests hose hasn't been reconnected properly.

    Looks good to me,
Do you need a 5 door though ?
    I love my 3 door:pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,106 ✭✭✭dar83

Did the Performance come with silver badges back then?

Also, unless you're willing to update them yourself, for the rest of the spec it has, it has the halogen headlights and no ACC. Deal breaker for me.

My current car is a 3-door. Even though for 99% of journeys there are no passengers in the back seat... I still would prefer a 5-door :pac:

    Fair enough!

Yeah no xenon's and ACC would turn me off too, looks a lovely car besides though. The GTi's are really holding value well

No xenons (It obviously dates back to when they were a relatively costly optional extra). Therefore a no for me. Who spec's sunroofs and leather in a GTI but sticks with the awful halogens. Jeeeeez....

The ACC isn't a biggie...imo. At least it doesn't have the ugly hole in the grill.

I would have said the same thing before I had it in a car. I think it's fantastic now and the only regret I have is not spec'ing DSG so that i could take full advantage of it. I can only think of how more relaxing my morning commute would be to rest the feet more. :D

Priced a bit on the high side I would’ve said.

Can be tricky too in terms of faults. I had to go to garage a few times with warning light on. Mine also slammed on while driving on Bachelor's walk for no reason, and didn't slam on when i tipped into the back of someone.

Elect a clown... Expect a circus

Completely forgot about xeons... Yeah I think I would regret not having them on the car.

I've only ever used ACC on rental cars before. I'd like it but dunno if it's a deal breaker.

Thanks for the input everyone :)

Is it worth talking to the service manager about the issues I've had recently? I understand mistakes happen and I can look past something like the washer fluid not being topped up but the air box not being connected, the headlight washers not being connected and pastry crumbs on my seats is taking the piss.

If I'm just going to be brushed off I won't bother though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 385 ✭✭SaintsYB

I'd be getting on to him about it too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,550 ✭✭✭JoeA3

You should but they won’t care. You might get a free VW keyring out of it... or maybe the next “service” FOC even though it’s already in your service plan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,106 ✭✭✭dar83

I would as well, doesn't matter how they try to downplay it, the airbox not being connected after a new turbo has been fitted is gross negligence to be perfectly blunt. Realistically anything could have been sucked in there and you'd be looking at another new turbo. The washer line not being reconnected just shows you the overall shoddy job that was done, work wise, and the crumbs in your car just hammers home how they must have treated it while it was in their possession.

i'd at least be talking to the service manager and if that got me nowhere i'd be going higher.

I had an incident with my dealer when my carried got serviced - I work in a local authority and my car was spotted by one of our contractors pulled into a service station with 4 staff from the vw garage out buying their lunch - miles from the dealership.

I ran the garage asking them for clarification an in the interim I ran VW Ireland for a contact in aftersales - two registered letters one to VW and one to the dealer and by Christ did they take me seriously!

Treated like royalty now when I drop the car in for a service!
