    An R-line ??

Yea looked like an R until the exhaust. Looking at the prices the mk8 is meant to take a big jump, the 181 isn't looking that bad if they'd drop a few k.
Kinda thinking the same lines as yourself car choice wise. I prefer the look of the GTI over the R, the S3 is a bit long in the tooth a facelift is coming and a complete new one in 2020, the ST3 seems like a blast and it's got a handbrake.

Is it good value at that price or a little rich?

I'd want at least 20% off new retail price when there's 10k kms on it. And we are fast approaching year end too of course.

By that I mean drive away price not whatever he is asking :)

It's not a million miles away from 20%, what would you get off a new one?

    Dunno TBH. I doubt you'd get 5% though :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,392 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

I'd say 5% is close enough.

Are there any dealers in the country to test drive the new ST or Polo GTI?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,539 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Lyons in Limerick have or at least had a new Fiesta ST in grey in stock.

Bolands in Wexford have an ST3 with the Performance pack.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,479 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

How hard is it to get a dealer model? That would be a nice discount to have on a 6 month old car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,025 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

There's probably a bunch due back from lease, that should be happening soon enough.

I just had a quick look at that one. That's the spec I'd be looking for. Would you be able to test drive that car as it has 10km on the clock? If so, I might nip down for a spin.

The surprised they allow it as an option on non R's.

Not only is it allowed R-line has been an official trim level for quite a while, loads of R-lines around and not just in Golfs is available on Tiguans, Passats etc also.

R-Line is just VW’s equivalent of M-Sport or S Line, etc. It’s just a trim level and sure enough, a well presented R Line could momentarily fool you especially if it has other options ticked like xenons and bigger wheels. Vast majority of them are 100bhp diesels.

Should have a Golf R week after next for a week, looking forward to every bit of it except the leaving it on the driveway at night bit.

Just going back to the MK8 Golf not having physical climate controls, it looks like the touch climate on the Touareg is always on the bottom of the screen so you don't need to go routing around 2-3 different menus for them which is good, but that's on the upgraded 15" screen. It seems the standard 9.2" screen still has physical climate buttons so maybe the MK8 Golf will have physical buttons.

I reckon if the MK8 has an 8" there'd be room for buttons.

I'll be happy to look after it in the evenings :pac:

The climate settings in the touchscreen in the Touareg are excellent. It’s always at the bottom of the screen no matter what other settings you’re in so you’re never searching.

Bit like the climate buttons in my car, always there too! :pac:

Ha true but compared to every other car that does have the controls in a touchscreen now, they’re done right.

Cruising on the M7 Saturday with ACC active. Car cuts in front of me from the left lane. ACC completely disengages, some warning briefly popped up on the centre display, pretty sure it said ACC and front assist unavailable. The ACC icon (replacing the odometer), was a solid orange with a triangle and exclamation mark.

The car info on the radio displayed ACC and front assist unavailable.

Now, I'd probably half expect some kind of reaction like that if ACC thought it had malfunctioned due to suddenly detecting something in its path, BUT,

The Glow Plug warning started flashing amber at the very same time, and the car seemed to go into some kind of limp mode. Would barely accelerate.

Pulled off the motorway, restarted, and warnings disappeared.

    Car seems fine since.

    Hardly normal behavior though?

With my mark4 it was normal, thank Mark in GTi direct for just resetting it when ever I popped around. Was half tempted just take out the bulb.

Does anyone know the used finance rates for hp? Skoda are offering 2.9% at the moment. VW rates seem to be a black magic and was pulled out of the air last time I checked? Ideally what they are for 3/4/5 years?

Sending a copy of the car paperwork to the dealer because the service plan isn't showing on my profile. Found a second copy of the order from when I picked up the car with the service plan taken off. I signed this one so I'm assuming this voids the previous one?

I guess in the excitement of getting a new car I overlooked the service plan and just checked the actual extras and cost were the same. Surprise service bill I suppose.

Bit **** as it's there on the original deal. I wouldn't mind but I always ensure I read through everything before signing.

Similar experience in 2015. New R arrived including service plan but wrong spec so had to reorder making sure plan was included. Each time I had it serviced I was asked for payment but they backed down when I explained. Poor customer service.

Driving an R nearly two days now. Phenomenal grip, brutal power delivery, stupid speed reached very quickly, the only negative for me is the actuator especially from 80km/hr to 100 it gets in on you. If I was buying one I’d be turning it off it’s far too intrusive.

Change the car to “Individual” mode and set everything except the actuator to Sport. Set the actuator to Eco. That setup effectively gives you Race mode without most of the stupid fake noise.

Agreed on actuator but I got used to it to the point that I am wondering if it could have switched itself off.

Can see this being a short movie, "Hi I'm Nobby and this is my golf r review, save yourself 10k and buy an i30n" *roll credits.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,579 ✭✭✭Mickiemcfist

Actually yea it'd be interesting to compare the total cost of ownership of a new R for 3 years vs an i30n, even including interest I'd have guessed the R is probably cheaper.

Yeah, I don't think Hyundai are anywhere near VW on the finance / PCP rates side of things, and then on the other end, the residuals are likely to be flakey.

Driving this Golf R this week. Joe's tip for the engine sound has seriously improved the comfort levels :o
