But in every thread it’s people who are saying how crap the show is and giving out yards and how they’re not tuning in again and that they’re done with the station...

...then the vast majority are doing the same thing about the same shows two weeks later.

I have my own questions about the JNLRs in how accurate they are from such a small sample size, but people who are giving out about the show on here are the same ones who are still listening.

I mean, take this thread. Same people saying it’s ****e and giving out about Ger and Joe...

    ...but they’re still listening.

I wouldn’t take negative comments on here as any reflection on what the listenership figures are like at all.

I don’t know how true that is, I’ve stopped listening to both breakfast and OTB but i occasionally happen to hear both shows when driving and flicking through stations. I listen for as long as I am reminded why I switched it off, usually no more than ten minutes. Paul Williams no more than 15-30 seconds, but you do get snippets of the shows but I am definitely not a listener. I’m sure a lot of the posters here are the same.

I have stopped listening full stop, just bored of it.
    Have I outgrown it maybe?
I found another station that does a good job on GAA stuff on Dublin City FM.
In particular a programme called 'GAA sportsdesk' (happened to catch it by chance after the traffic programme).
It is not polished but discusses local Dublin GAA - clubs and county stuff etc on Wednesday evenings.
Dublin City also do GAA commentary of Dublin club matches (which I knew already)

But I looked up Dublin City's website there do plenty of other sports shows as well.

    https://dublincityfm.ie/taxonomy/term/7

So between Dublin City FM and the GAA hour Podcast, I don't have any further need for OTB and thier antics.
Only for I listen to Newstalk - Moncrieff (sometimes) / Ivan Yates (sometimes) / Tom Dunne (very occasionally) 106fm would be removed from the tuner dial.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

I'm not a huge fan of the current crop of presenters, but still listened fairly regularly, not much else on the radio at that hour anyway.

They are really after expanding the staff hugely over the last month or so. Somebody must have been feeding Ger Gilroy after midnight or something. Seems that a lot of the local bloggers and social media sports influencers (:D) now have part time jobs in the OTB youtube channel. Guys like Darren Cleary and Johnny Ward.

I think the YouTube channel is a great idea. You'd wonder how nobody has already captured that market, BBC Radio 5? RTE? Sky Sports? Second Rate Captains even? Seems like a no brainer.

On a side note, I think I heard the most descriptive comment about Johnny Ward's style of punditry while listening to somebody discussing Off The Ball. Authoritative Bogger :)

I agree that the you tube channel is a good idea by them, they can hit people who don't listen to thier radio show that way.

Sky Sports show snippets of programmes on you tube.

The Sky Sport Debate - has popped up as a recommended on you tube.
I clicked on it when the world cup was on it was not great.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4PjxEijul2A

Just seven minutes of Danny Murphy and Craig Bellamy offering very little insight then what the average layman would know already.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

This is it. People passively listen to OTB. I might turn it on while flicking through stations but will switch after 10 minutes max. It's wall to wall 'lads banter' tinged with social justice, white knight nonsense.
It is very low brow pretending to be something else.
The gambling stuff just proves the point. Hypocrisy of the highest order.

Darren Cleary's been reading sports bulletins on 98fm for years now.

If you're going to comment on people at least know what they do instead of putting them in the bracket of 'social media influencer'.

Doesn't suit your narrative of talking in facts though so I doubt you'll even take this post in mind.

How does someone "passively listen" to the radio? Would the opposite be "active listening", and if so what does that mean?

I think he/she means putting it on as background noise. but not not listening attentively?
Not feeling engaged in the show.

I'm laughing that they are saying Eubank Jr. is at the same level as Canelo and GGG.

But they were paying enough attention to do this critique.

I'm a big Eubank Jr fan, but I think its ridiculous to say he's up there with GGG or Canelo. He lost to Saunders, and Groves made him look fairly amateurish. Be interesting to see how Saunders would do against either GGG or Canelo, but with his drug issue this week it's not even certain that his upcoming fight against Andrade will go ahead.

The didn't. They said that Eubank junior will be looking towards Canelo/GGG to see if he might get a fight there given he won recently.

Maybe I missed them making a more flat out comparison

Haven't listened to the football show in ages.

Keith Andrews interview, some ads, interview with a guy from Boylespo - *radio off* -

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,954 ✭✭✭Raoul

I used to listen daily. Just can't now with all the boylesports ads. Their hypocrisy is ridiculous.

How did OTB cover the Ronaldo rape accusation?

it was only mentioned on the sports news that he is looking for time out of the Portuguese squad.

Listened to Giles again on my way home.

He's getting worse. Say a line, then repeat it about 5 or 6 times. Does this for every point he makes. Zero control by the host, just let him ramble on and on. All the hosts are the same, seem reluctant to intervene.

And for such a football man, you'd think he would know the surname of one of Irelands main players.

3 times he called Harry Arter Harry Arthur.

    Getting embarrassing at this stage.

I'm gone the opposite way on him.

I got tired of him on OTB a few years ago, but I've started listening to Eamo's podcast when he's on it and I'm really enjoying it.

    Wow. That's such a disgrace.

You could say that its a minor thing, but the guy doesn't even know the name of an Irish international.

And its meant to be his trade and what he gets paid for.

But then he has form, I have heard him on CL nights on RTE say "I don't know anything about this team/player"......well go and find out about them, you're being paid to analyse them or give your opinion on them.

He's not the only person who does that to be fair, I've heard Roy Keane call Jeff Hendrick 'Hendricks'

John Giles and the paper review are the only podcasts from OTB I enjoy now. I don't think he's being paid for his encyclopedic knowledge on the modern game, probably just to give his old school and trusted take on the modern game. Bad and good points in that order...

    Bad
Repeating sentences endlessly – ‘Pogba is not the complete midfield player’, ‘He’s only 19’ ‘Midfielders job is to take the ball’
The old Days nobody under 50 remembers – featuring Don Revie and Brian Clough
Forgetting things I remember – teams, players and presenters names

    Good
Remembering things I’ve forgotten – The result in a fixture last season, irish player names
Makes good points – doesn’t go with the consensus opinion, doesn’t talk in cliches
Doesn’t change opinion – mourinho’s a good football man, has always been in love with luka modric

Altogether a humble and nice man with the experience to back his thoughts on football up, the exact opposite to graham hunter.

Giles is far better on Dunphy’s podcast imo. Way less (almost none) rambling about the good old Leeds days. Dunphy directs the flow of the conversation much better than the OTB lads.

Giles is a treasure and I for one will be very sad when his voice is no longer heard.

Giles talked pure and simple common sense about the Rice situation, I'd take that over someone who pronounces every name perfectly but talks nothing but sh1te.
