@AonghusOMaicin: Almost there. Plenty to dig into in tomorrow's Western People sports pages, including the latest on #mayogaa. Rochford's return, it would appear, isn't set in stone just yet. #buyapaper https://twitter.com/AonghusOMaicin/status/1031259169003905024/photo/1

Can't believe if this is still fecking dragging on

Well did anyone #buyapaper and find out what the alleged story with Rochford is ?

No surprise there. He will learn from it and move on.

He is lucky at that, could have been worse. I wonder what was said in his ear before hand

Mayo News reporting Mike Connelly and four other county board officials met with the Mayo captain Cillian O Connor and vice captains Aidan O Shea/Tom Parsons on Thursday evening in MacHale Park for an annual review meeting.

Separately Stephen Rochford met with the board Friday evening and are due to meet again in a fortnight by which time he aims to have nailed down a number of individuals to work alongside himself and Joe Keane.

Connelly quote "He still has to put together a backroom team and he's hoping for have that done by the end of next week and that's where it's at".

Connelly confirmed the players would have no input in the formulation of the backroom team.

Seems to be more rumbling with the Ladies and in particular from a leading Mayo club side who want the Co.Board out.
    The saga continues!

Delegates at the lgfa co.board meeting unanimously voted this club out of all remaining senior league and club matches for 2018 as it was deemed the club had brought the game/lgfa/co.board into disrepute over withdrawal of 8 of their players from the Mayo senor panel this year and not following procedures.
Apparently there was a huge majority vote in favour of this by delegates.
This club now have the right to appeal this decision but it really does leave a sour taste over ladies football in Mayo.

Could you really see mchale leaving mcstays side? I seriously doubt it. I think we would see another player revolt if he got involved.

I think the poster was making a tongue in cheek remark.

    Definitely haven't any such rumour.

What a shocking demise to Cora Staunton's glittering football career.

its the players who had no involvement in this at all that i feel sorry for. Trained all year and now punished because of the actions of 8 of their county players.

Agreed. Why punish a whole club for the perceived wrong doings of a few players? So does this mean if AOS and the rest of the Breaffy contingent refuse to play for Mayo then the club would get kicked out of the league? Yes I know the GAA and Ladies GAA are seperate just a hypothetical question.

Seems very harsh on the other club players, to be honest I see a court case looming.

The club withdrew the players apparently is the line now so that's why the club is being punished.

Is there any idea of what this is all over?

Total nonsense throwing a club out because some players chose to walk away from the county team. Nobody has to play for the county. Nobody is tied to the Mayo team or owes them anything. Neither players nor clubs should be punished for walking away. Will the clubs of the other players who walked away be given similar treatment?

What a shocking demise to Cora Staunton's glittering football career.

Cora Staunton has a huge legacy and is seen as one of the greatest ever female footballers.
How many years service has she given Mayo ?
How many titles both for club and intercounty has she played a prominent part in bringing to the county?

She is so desirable as a footballer that even when in her mid thirties she was signed by a semi professional club in a different sport.

The county board on the other hand is seen as a cack handed organisation that never really looked after the players.

I am not allowed discuss …

The ladies? I'm not in the know but the rumour I've heard is that management wanted to use Cora less / as an impact sub etc and Cornacon wasn't happy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,286 ✭✭✭seligehgit

Carnacon have 5 days to appeal the decision according to Edwin McGreal.

I never understand why some older players are so opposed to be used as impact subs (thinking of you Mort).

The fact is your legs are not as good as they were for 70 minutes, but coming on as an impact sub means that for the 10/15 minutes when you are on you have better legs than the rest and if you are a scoring player it gives you the chance to save the day in glory.

I'm talking specifically about Cora Stantoun and her legacy, not the actions of the others or how the others have come out of all this.

Stantoun is the most prolific footballer of a generation.

Yet she will have bowed out of inter county, and possibly club football, in a most ignominious manner.

No big hyped last game, no Mayo News souvenir pullout, no national or local media waxing lyrical about her career, nothing.

This is a Tiger Woods wrapping his SUV around a tree back in 2009 type moment.
