I got to listen to a Radio 1 documentary on Saturday afternoon about the shameful behaviour of priests and nuns in Kerry.

In Feb 1946 a girl from Listowel Peggy McCarthy was killed, by both the church and the local authorities of Kerry, as she was refused medical treatment in the hospitals in Listowel and Tralee.
And why was she refused treatment and forced to travel to Killarney?
Well the council rules stated that they would not allow mothers whose baby were conceived out of wedlock into their wards.

And the nuns in those hospitals refused her entry on those grounds.
She died in Killarney and left a baby girl.

Now that wasn't the worse folks.

The worst was that the parish priest of Listowel locked the gates and doors of the church to prevent her body entering the church.

Only but for the people led by the hackney driver, John Guerin, that had taken her from hospital to hospital and taken her body home forced the church open, she would have been dumped on the side of the road.
    He broke open the door/gates.

But no it doesn't stop there.
The baby Breda who had an intellectual disablility, probably due to the prolonged labour, was reared by her grandparents.

But when her grandmother passed away in the early 1960s she as an 18 year old was placed into a Magdalene Laundry in Limerick by one of the local priests.

The girl/woman has spent her life in institutions all thanks to the church and it's enablers.

Listening to that story, another legacy of the catholic church in Ireland in the 20th century, more innocent lives destroyed all because they didn't fit some screwed up narrow minded view of morality, I could not feel anything but anger tinged with pride that at least one man stood up to them.

It wasn't enough that an innocent girl was consigned to death, a baby consigned to a disability, they had to consign her to a life of toil, imprisonment and slavery.

And these were the same fooking cnuts that lectured people about not having abortion, about no contraception.
They couldn't give a shyte about babies, about children as else they wouldn't treat some of them as waste.

Most catholics and I would add priests today are decent, but a hell of a lot of ones from the past were not.

They stood by and let the Peggy McCarthys of this country be murdered, they stood by and let the innocent Breda McCarthys be carted off to a life of sheer hell.

There weren't enough John Guerins in this country.

We have a shameful past and until that Argie fecker stands up and apologies for the acts of his predecessors and the institution he heads and begs for forgiveness from the Bredas of this world, well he can fook himself as far as I am concerned.

What part of 'fcuk the RCC, fcuk the pope...' do you think is not bigotry?

The part that says "they hid child abusers within their ranks for decades, and used threats and intimidation to keep the victims quiet". That bit was missing when Catholics were refused jobs and homes in pre-troubles NI.

Speaking as a northern (ex) Catholic, I think that southerners trying to exploit prejudice against innocent northern Catholics as a defence for the child abusers in the Catholic Church (who were abusing children in the north too, you know) cynical beyond words.

I'm not defending anyone! If you, as Northern Catholic don't see what was posted as bigotry then that's a poor reflection on you.

People are entitled to hate the Pope and tell him where to go if they so wish. It's not a crime.

    It's really not you know.

If you don't see the difference between the prejudice that northern Catholics suffered merely for belonging to a social group they had not even chosen to join (even becoming a Protestant wouldn't have helped that much, you'd still be under suspicion for not being "one of us") and someone looking at a series of serious criminal acts carried out by over decades employees of an organisation and concluding - rightly or wrongly - that they believe the whole organisation must have been complicit to some extent, then I think that reflects very poorly on you.

And I think you trying to conflate that with what happened in NI is cynical and dishonest.

They were talking about it on the radio this morning - the do's and don't of going to see the pope. Then at the end they throw in....and expect to walk 14km.

I wouldn't walk 14km to ride Beyoncé, let alone see some paedo protector pontificate, the pope can fúck right off!

Well I suppose I can forgive the pontificating, seems to be within his job description:D

Jaysus, don't give Twink your number - she's prone to leaving weird voicemails I hear!

Didn't say why the ridiculous amount of walking, but they did say no mobility scooters, which probably explains the need for the pop up morgue.

Should have allowed coaches only to park on the North Road in the Park.

Expecting people to walk many kms there AND back is unrealistic.

And I say that as someone with no interest in the event at all.

Only if they align with the church's view (IE not the same gender as you, and/or under the age of consent)

I may be considered as a form of sex, and sex outside of marriage will result in going to hell.
