Vera Farmiga will play the mother of Millie Bobby Brown in the Godzilla sequel, with daddy duty having gone to Kyle Chandler.

Michael Dougherty (Krampus) is directing from a script he wrote with Zach Shields. The Legendary and Warner Bros. feature is the follow-up to Gareth Edwards' 2014 reboot, which earned $529.1 million worldwide.

Plot details are being kept secret, but Chandler, who has already starred in creature features Super 8 and King Kong, is the hero of the pic and plays a scientist.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters is slated for release on March 22, 2019.

I heard the same, hence the new "Kong" is soo bloody massive so as to make a fight between the two a bit more even :D

    No, the order is:

    Godzilla (2014)
    Kong: Skull Island (2017)
Godzilla: King of The Monsters (2019)
    Godzilla vs. Kong (2020)

Jesus that trailer is rookie stuff. One of camera operators is in the shot on the left hand side!

That's a trailer for 2014's Godzilla, not sure why they included it in that youtube video. The scene with Millie Bobby Brown is from the sequel.

    Right. That makes sense...I think.

Ah hold on, I didn't check the full second video. Here's what I think has been happening in this thread...

    - They released the new teaser to youtube
    - It's just the Millie Bobby Brown scene
    - I posted it here
    - They took down the trailer for some bizarre reason
    - I found an alternative but it has 2014 trailers pegged onto the end
    - I posted it here thinking it was just the Millie Bobby Brown scene

Given the audience of Comic Con, Im surprised how human focused it was. Could have done with more disaster and monster footage. Still a decent trailer mind.

Thankfully said humans look a little more interesting than Aaron Taylor Johnson's dreary lead from the 2014 film.

Not sure about the story here.

Mankind is screwing up the planet, so we have to go and find the titans and they have a scrap.

    Problem solved?

    What?

If so, then I'd prefer a cameo, before getting squished by godzilla :)

    Rodan: check
    Mothra: check
    King Ghidorah: F*CKING CHECK!

Who was it being "petted" at around 1:10? I'm assuming that was Mothra, like in its caterpillar stage maybe before we see its wings develop later in the trailer? Also at 1:32, is that a second Rodan in the sky??

Yeah I'm actually nerding out right now.....

Found it a bit underwhelming and generic.

Not nearly as interesting or eye catching as the first trailer for the 2014 film is still brilliant today

Is it actually a sequel or a reimagining? Not really clear to me from trailer.

It's a sequel AFAIK, following on from the 2014 film after Godzillas reveal to the world.

Great use of Clare de Lune.

I've a soft spot for the first film, mainly due to the visuals and the sense of awe and wonder about nature, which this films seems to be doubling down on, so count me intrigued.

There’s also a few returning characters - those played by Sally Hawkins and Ken Watanabe at least.

Personally, Shin Godzilla was the decades-overdue kick in the arse this monster series needed - a film that expertly balances the smarts with the silliness, and used the monster story as a way to deliver an unusually effective commentary on real-world issues (in this case the Fukushima disaster and hopeless Japanese political bureaucracy). Plus, the monster stuff was great :pac: Obviously a hopeless case, but I’d love Hollywood to learn from that film rather than diving deeper into the CG extravangasa.

I watched Shin Godzilla, but I thought it was awful. 2018 and godzilla still almost looks the exact same as he did originally! I thought it was kinda BS as well how they essentially just
    froze
    him and that was it.

Yeah, from the trailer at least, there appears to be some sort of befuddled eco 'message plot' that makes little or no sense at all but is likely to make you roll eyes real hard.
I'm still geeking out though. One of my favorite movies as a kid was 'Destroy All Monsters' and it had a plot that made even less sense but since it featured ALL THE FREAKIN' MONSTERS! I guess I didn't care... it was Roland Emerich levels of popcorn destruction before such things existed.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Pffh, yeah, as if a weighty message should ever be in a Godzilla movie ... pffh!:pac:

edit: to be fair the theme in the trailer does seem to be a weird eco-nihilism going on via Vera Farmiga's character, but who knows what it's supposed to be in the final film ...

I think most Godzilla fans are aware of it's themes and subtext, especially the original, but they were themes and subtext, not, as you put it wierd preachy eco-nihilism as a plot.

I'll bet dollars to donughts that 'we are the scourge that king ghidorah must eliminate' and the titans are there to ensure it doesn't end in a literal schorched earth as a result.
Either way I dont care, I just want to see them fight, but it's always nice (but very rare) to get a Godzilla movie worth seeing for more than that. I'm just saying that occasionally an interesting plot that doesn't make you roll your eyes and compelling characters would be nice. The last film started out with some of that ...and then killed them all... and left us with Blandy McBlanderson and an urge to hit the skip button to get to the next monster mash.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,551 ✭✭✭✭Tony EH

I wouldn't mind if there is an eco plot. But, it would have to make sense. Finding all the titans, in some sort of pokemon contest to save the eco system just sounds stupid. Not that the central thrust of Godzilla films aren't stupid, with monsters and whatnot. But, we all know that going in and if that's a deal breaker, then you don't watch. But the stuff that's hung around it has to add up.

Maybe as someone else said, she's a "baddie" out for her own reasons entirely? And she couldn't give a hoot about what's happening to the world. Who knows.

The trailer looks interesting enough and I thought Gareth Edwards did a decent job with the "first" Godzilla film, even though killing off Bryan Cranston's was a major miss-step.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

All I ask of any giant monster FX is that they remember to give the creatures the appropriate amount of heft & weight that any 40 foot lizard should have. Pacific Rim 2 really dropped the ball there, for instance.

As above, for all its faults, the one thing Godzilla 2014 captured brilliantly was that colossal scale and heaviness (indeed I thought Edwards was one of the few Star Wars directors who really captured the sheer size of its capital ships in Rogue One)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,551 ✭✭✭✭Tony EH

AFAIK, Edwards has a background in digital art. So that's, possibly, helped him with issues regards weight in CGI, and how objects relate to their environs.

That's probably it then: I know as a conventional director he's a bit sloppy and not most peoples' preferred, but in being an outlier who seems to understand the scale and spatial context of CGI better than most directors, he gets a lot of time from me. I've lost count how often some floaty, rubbery & weightless FX have just completely shattered the artifice, the suspension of disbelief.

Oh, it's one of my pet peeves Pix. Can't stand it when I see some computer generated vehicle or animal defy physics in a film. It really sets me off.

I also hate the way it allows film makers to indulge in their most absurd and ill-conceived ideas too.

As for Edwards, I don't have a problem with him. He's made, easily, the best Star Wars film since 1983 and I liked 'Monsters' and 'Godzilla'. There are flaws in there, sure, but I'm hard pressed to think of a film without a couple of rough edges, and how responsible Edward's was for those flaws remains a matter for debate.
