Can someone explain exactly what the players supposed issue is with McHale?
Do they simply think he's not up to it - or does it run deeper than that?

I can't see McStay as a viable option now, he could have been a good appointment 3/4 years ago, but that ship has sailed. He seemed to take the rejection last time quite personally.

Mind you if he really wanted the job back then, you'd think financial considerations could have been put to one side

He wrote an article that was highly critical of some of their players. (I think it was after the 2013 AI final, but I'm not entirely sure.) They got the hump and have decided that they didn't want him being a part of their own coaching/management set up. So goes the urban legend. Am sure there'll be someone along soon to take umbrage with my using the phrase "got the hump" but sure there you go....

Liam McHale is full of his own self-importance. The futher he stays away the better.

The like for like was that McStay won a Connacht something Rochford didn`t achieve and put miles on the legs of lads through the back door that they could have done without. Especially this year.

But again its not comparing like with like, Both teams have had very different draws to contend with, Roscommon had an easy draw again last year and could have tailored their preparations for a Connacht Final tilt, this year we had to be ready to peak in early May. Anywya the argument could be made that last years qualifier run galvanised the team and they were at their peak for the AI. Agreed this yera it was vital to have an easier run but just didnt happen.

Exactly. Was it last year he declared himself the best coach in the country?

I think its time for a change in manager. Rochford has done a great job but its time to try something new.
I would favour someone from outside of Mayo. A former player who has won the All Ireland as a player in the not too distant past so knows what it takes to get over the line. Senior county management experience would be good but not essential in my humble opinion.

You may have a right, but I doubt there is any player in Mayo from junior up that does not know what it takes to get over the line after following this present team for the last 8 years.

Yes. He was the inaugural winner of the 'The Liam McHale excellence award', something Stephen Rochford has never won. I think we should be looking at someone with that kind of pedigree.

I would be for a Mayo man, outside managers have never worked in Mayo. I think some other poster mentioned Michael Solan which is probably the best move if he was willing to take it.

In fairness, Mickey Moran was treated quite harshly. One season - and one All Ireland Final appearance.

He deserved better.....at least a second season in charge.

What followed from 07 to 2010 didn't really justify his removal.

Poor Mickey Moran wasn`t treated that well in a few places, not just Mayo.

He deserved a lot better than he got from my own county Donegal.

Well he has stepped down as manager of Slaughtneil so he is free.

From my reckoning he is in his late 60`s now, so he might have a problem with the distances that would be involved.
As far as I recall it was something he wasn`t that keen on when he was younger but he had a travel side-kick in John Morrison in those days which helped.

It would be a good test for that Dublin Fella . Lets see if he can do it with Mayo . His name is Gavin or something like that .

I'd say he was hinting more towards St Jimmy.
As he didn't get the Galway united job he might need something to lift his profile again.
He certainly spoke in the past about managing Mayo but that was previous to his Ireland win with his native Donegal.

Declan Shaw, Decalan O' Reilly and Doother Durkan as joint managers of Mayo, that's the only answer (if there is even a question)

Would Big Barry get a game then!

What about the return of Horan. We know he has a real good relationship with the guys. If Horan came back, it is because he sees real players to take the place of some of the older guys.
I always liked him for what he did to Mayo football. The drive and the standards just went up. Granted he made mistakes but there was a real confidence with his teams. I loved when he would say something along these lines " we can wait to get out there and show what we can do" as I knew we were up for the game.

To be honest Horan has a great chance to take Westport to the next level, it'll be a good while before he considers Mayo again i'd say.

It wouldn't amaze me if there was a lot of pleading with Rochford behind the scenes to stay on. The players made very clear in 2015 they wanted a large part of the recruitment process and wouldn't accept any sub-standard candidate. Hearing the names put forward as alternatives wouldn't fill you with confidence

Not even suggesting it is the case with Mayo, but I have always been a bit uncomfortable with players having a large part to play in the recruitment process when it comes to a manager.
I can see where lads/lassies who put their lives on hold and slog their guts out for the glory of their county would want as say in who the boss is, but I also see where because of it there is a possibility of the tail ending up wagging the dog so to speak.

He's a top top manager but I don't believe there is any greater test of a manager's credentials than to manage the Mayo football team.Few managers would be willing to risk diminishing their legacy by failing in their sole purpose in the role.Succeed where so many have failed and deliver Sam.Anyway it's pipe dream stuff as Gavin isn't leaving his current role with Dublin any time soon and he's ultimately employed by Irish Aviation Authority which isn't decentralising to Mayo anytime soon.:pac:

Jim McGuinness did make mention in the past of possibly managing the Mayo team but I think it's clear from the IT article that he wouldn't now touch us with a bargepole as he sees a team in decline/transition.

Agree James Horan is likely to stay put in Westport as the curve is only going one way there with all the talent coming through.

I definitely believe James will manage Mayo again and TBF in spite of tactical errors I'd be delighted to see him come back.

Not too sure re the former joint managers at Mitchels, huge step up irrespective of the fact that Declan O Reilly has managed Mayo at minor level previously.

It's a tough gig without doubt, but surely one of the most desirable ones as well. Probably best if the demand for all-ireland is put on hold for a year or two. Copy Kerrys approach of filling the bench with experience next summer, and putting faith in youth. I know we don't have the abundance of talent available as the kingdom but let's let them loose in the league and if we get relegated do be it. A connacht title next year and a go at the super eights is an achievable goal. If Rochford remains he has to alter his goals, as another all or nothing assault at an all-ireland is bound to end in failure.

Can a previous manager of mayo reclaim and achieve the same respect/standards and performance levels as his first innings? Previous experience suggests otherwise especially with O'Mahony.

Horan did a lot with the team first time around -the professionalism, vision of the type of player that he wanted to play for mayo (purists may argue that they were level football oriented, with the focus on power and pace) and the buy in of the team to the style.

Perhaps McEntee may be worth a punt? What's his relationship with the players like?

A collaborative approach may work best given some of the players experience and high standards.

O'Mahony took the job to try ensure a political seat

Well, knowing a bit of the background to that appointment id say thats bs but its a common perception. He is steeped in Mayo football. Didnt do him any harm anyway.
