Will the current Mk7 be getting the new 1.5 TSI in Ireland?

Recently picked up a 152 golf r with 35k km on the clock , it doesn’t have dcc ...over all in great condition but have two issues and I am not sure if they are normal ...

    1. It’s a little soft which I’m surprised at ... had a gti before it which had a good few mods when I bought it so probably was on aftermarket springs but it handled a lot better than the R . Anyone else notice it a little soft when driving it on , when on back roads (rides great on main roads , no noises , bangs or crashes otherwise from the suspension ) ... I have ordered a set of eibach prokit springs which will hopefully help.

Have taken it back to the main dealer who have checked everything and given me a printed test on the suspension and say everything is normal re the softness

    2. I’m getting a whine on the front left at approx 110-120 kmph on very good roads . Have changed all 4 tyres and noise still there afterwards (Michelin pilot sport s) so not balancing , it only appears on main roads and seem to be quieter in eco/normal mode than race mode which I normally have the car in ... I’m wondering is it just the normal soundaktor and it’s a bit whiney ?

I picked up a 151 Golf R with 39km on the clock so pretty similar a few weeks ago.

Mine would be pretty quiet at motorway speeds tbh.

Edit: Just took it for a drive to check, seems soft enough but stiffer than my old octavia vrs by a fair bit. Handling gets quicker in race mode. I was surprised how well the R handles.

Does anyone know what's up with not being able to configure anything but the Trendline and Comfortline Golfs?

I was told yesterday that there are no more orders being taken by the factory.
    Only in stock cars available.

Maybe that has something to do with it.

Don't the VW factories shut every year around this time for static holidays or maybe it has something to do with the new real world emission tests introduced?

Order banks are currently closed for Audi/VW/SEAT/Skoda and some other manufacturer's, while they sort out the WLTP stuff.

Stock on some stuff is becoming a big issue - there are currently 2 Passat Trendline's unsold in the whole of Ireland!!!!!!!

Yeah, it's the WLTP thing - which in itself is surely temporary? Surely they'll open up all the models/variants to factory orders again sooner rather than later?

Also, I think they're discontinuing the manual gearbox option in the GTD and in the R for similar reasons (permanently).

I was in with VW on Friday and was told September before they start taking new orders and due to the backlog it will be early next year before delivery.

Only 1 GTI available for purchase in the country and it has extras pushing the price to €45K.

Seat have some orders currently being processed but only on a batch ordered by Seat Ireland 5 cupras in different guises.

Skoda in a similar way but I was told almost no chance of a VRS245.

Now that you mention it when I spoke to someone from VW Kilkenny, they mentioned about not knowing the exact price a Polo GTI would be due to WLTP but that either way, it'd be around a 26-ish week wait for one.

It does seem a bit crazy and will surely hit new car sales (182 / 191) severely.

I know the TSI petrols in the Polo's and Ibiza's are in very short supply too.

So potentially the new price of a lot of cars will rise if the emissions are restated and they get pushed into a higher vrt bracket?
I wonder will the manufacturers revise their pre tax prices or will the government do anything about vrt brackets themselves to encourage us into electric?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,106 ✭✭✭dar83

I knew about the freeze due to the re-testing required, but what didn't hit me fully until last week (when I priced up the cost to change out of curiosity) was how many high spec R's are currently sitting in dealerships across the island. Funny how things change from the usual base spec with maybe the additional Pretoria's option ticked due to them being a cost effective "upgrade" that dealerships usually have as stock. For example, not one pool DSG R left in the country comes without leather, or includes other options which pushes the price to a minimum of 53k, or in some cases up to 57k.

Call me cynical, but nothing like a shortage to push through higher margin cars that usually no dealership would sit on in this country. :pac:

Has anyone ever seen / bought / recommend Dust Covers or boot liners or something similar for the Golf boot space? My dogs have turned my boot into a scene from blarney woolen mills. Something like this, but not for 140 pounds.... (7R)

According to the official WLTP website, the idea is not to increase the financial burden on consumers but it’s going to be very hard to police that I would’ve thought.

Here’s an example from their site, I fail to see how the government won’t end up charging you more to tax this car, perhaps not a car you bought during the useage of the old method but a brand new car with higher CO2 is going to surely attract more VRT and road tax?

“For example, as of September 2017 one car model might still have a value of 100g CO2/km using the old NEDC test, but a recently approved car might come in at around 120g CO2/km under the new WLTP test.”

VW do a genuine boot mat / protector for the Golf. I had one in the R. It’s a much simpler job than the one in your link though, it’s just a light piece of foam that covers the boot floor area - it’s not gonna extend out over the open boot lip like that one. It does a decent job of keeping the boot floor spotless though. About €50 if I recall.

    Thanks joe/rusky....

Rusky, was that the one from VW? that’s a good start. I Might be able to fabricate some covering for the back of back seats.

I find with the VW foam cover that it doesn't fit correctly if you drop the floor down to the lowest level. Just an FYI.

Yes, I bought it in blackwater motors when it was on sale for ab €28. The full price is ab €55. The hatchback one could be a bit cheaper, mine is the estate version.
Btw, as JoeA3 has mentioned, it is a foam liner, not a rubber one.

Not an issue in the R - there is no lower level :pac:

Ha, why is that I wonder.

Lower level in the boot makes all the difference.

I heard on Newstalk this morning that VW is reporting issues with production volumes over the new testing requirements. They're claiming they don't have enough of the equipment to carry out new testing and this will result in factory shutdowns for some of September.

So imagine the start of 2019 will be tough for VW. No doubt other manufacturers will have similar issues.

I couldn’t lower the floor in my hatchback due to a full-size spare wheel. Make no difference in the estate as the boot is huge.

Quick Q for the guru's on the board here. '18 7.5PP/DSG - regarding the ACC/DCC, how can it be set up that the damn thing stays in the same mode on start up each time. Previous car was 7.0PP and if one left it in Eco on shut down..... it remained in Eco upon restart. This car just reverts to Drive each time no matter what I do. Stupid gripe I know but........

Only other gripe I have is that the under seat storage trays have disappeared !

Thus far I actually find the 7.5 a little earier on the jungle juice. Possibly due to the 7sp over the 6sp in the 7.0. The box itself is nicer with better spaced ratios. Also, definitely more mid range power over the 7.0 even though the bhp increase is minimal.
