No, looking at the numbers it seemed quite expensive to be getting exactly the same car again with the only difference being the reg (we were looking at a facelift but it's essentially the same).

If we got a 182, to keep our payments the same we would have to put around €5k deposit with out equity and then still owe 22k between monthly payments and balloon payment.

We are €14k away from owning our 162. Including the additional deposit the total cost of owning a 182 would come to €27k ish. A new car would be nice but it's not worth that much to us. It's easy to view it as "it's just 5k down and keep the same monthly for another 3 years" but it's hard to ignore the real cost behind it.

I know half the concept with PCP is that you maybe never plan on owning the car, so the full purchase price should be something some people might not really be thinking about, and owning the car isn't really a huge deal to us either, we are happy to have a Golf bill the same way we have a phone bill but they seem like big enough numbers to have hanging over you for a Golf the same as you already have.

Yeah, I’m in the same boat as you really. I don’t think I’ll go for a new car again though as I just don’t want that large debt hanging over me, as you said it’s a lot to have hanging out there. I would go from 15k to 28k if I bought a GTD again.

I will almost certainly end up keeping my own car when it comes down to finances for the reasons that everyone has mentioned here. I’d love a change but not for 5k to end up in a lesser car in terms of spec or performance.

I would think that the dealers would be very aggressively trying to get people to roll over their PCP deals as that’s how they make money from them. The worst outcome for them is for me to hold onto the car and keep it for another 3/4 years.

So auto down/up driver window switch doesn't seem to work and along with it using the key to open the windows no longer works :(

I've something similar, the driver control over the front passenger window that won't work in auto mode. I haven't checked the key function.

The window switches in the Golf are made out of chocolate. They are very popular to give trouble. Quick and easy replacement under warranty though.

One thing to try here is to "re-train" the windows. Basically, hold the window switch down until the window is fully open and keep pressing it for 5 seconds, then pull it up to close the window and keep it up for another 5 seconds again. This will calibrate the window so it knows where the top and bottom are, the auto windows won't work if it's forgotten somehow.

Yeah just keep it pressed down for a while. Should sort it.

Went out to the car there and didn't need to do anything, window switch working fine and the windows went down using the key too. Suppose I'll keep the fix in mind!

My driver side "forgets" every so often too. Sometimes I reset it, sometimes I leave it and it starts working after a while. Bit of a strange one.

I've posted this on the Motor Chat forum but said I would ask the same here just in case it might be overlooked.

Parents looking at a late mk5 golf auto with a 1.6 petrol engine. Does anyone know what auto gearbox this is likely to have? Google search is shedding no light on what to find in the mk5.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,538 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

I think there was a mix of the traditional torque converter and the newer DSG. There were two 1.6 engines in the Mk5 Golf, the old 100bhp 8 valve and FSi 115bhp. Not sure which box was available on either. Generally anything the the DSG box back then would have the DSG name in chrome on the gear selector.

Thanks, Bazz. The car is 102hp so non fsi by the sounds of it. Mileage is very low but will take it for a spin this evening and see how it holds up. I would imagine that if it's on the old engine it's paired with a torque converter which I would probably prefer.

Anything I should be on the lookout when test driving the car?

I don't know a huge amount about them but typical things would be to see if there is any service history especially around frequent engine oil changes. You would be surprised how many low mileage but old cars rarely see fresh oil. I'd be also be checking when the timing belt and water pump would have been changed and if not sure then budget for it to be done.

Autobox, I'd make sure it shifts up and down through the gears without any issues or noise. Not sure if the old torque converter needs regular ATF changes but the DSG ones do need a ATF change every 60k miles I think.

Anyone due for a change in the new year?

No orders being taken by VW until January, no 3 door golf's either.
I might have to keep mine as there's nothing else I'd by...unless I could find a nice TTS.

Yep, due to change myself. Was going to pop in tomorrow to discuss options, so interesting you say no orders till January. Current leanings are towards a BiTDI Tiguan, but might have to revisit that.
Nice machine in R line spec, I really like the look of them. I'm not sure if I want an SUV...I have a G wagen being delivered later this year.

Do you know if the other VAG companies are taking no new orders till January?
I was hoping to order a new Audi (petrol) sometime around November for 2019.

They're all on lockdown due to the new emissions testing requirements, which require testing cars for specific configurations and individual options attached. Which is going to be a nightmare for them.

It is going to be one of the reasons that individual options are done away with though and we'll see a lot more of things like the Tech pack, that includes a range of items in it for one price.

I enquired about a highline Golf with the new 1.5 TSI EVO engine and they can't be ordered until 2019, same with a Leon Cupra only models that are in stock.

I think you'd be mad to get rid of your R.

    I think it's a shorter interval than even the 60k kms :)

I just found this vehicle on Carzone.ie http://www.carzone.ie/used-cars/audi/tt/used-2015-152-audi-tt-tts-dublin-fpa-201807038095251

    Yeah it's 60k kms/ 40k miles.

I don't think WLTP IS preventing new orders just that dealers and customers are hesitant to place them as the price may be subject to change and they can't quantify by how much. But if you aren't too worried about being +/- an amount of money you can still order afaik.

So I've seen on here that generally VW dealers are fine with adding options that aren't on the official list as long as you can provide the option code for it but where does one find these codes for specific options?

Maybe try the download brochure on a website? I was looking on the German configurator and there's a little spoiler, door plates and all for the Golf. You can even get Prets on the entry spec Golf!

Good few extras on the German Golf we don't have.

The German site is acting a little funny for me at the moment so I can't seem to find the specific code I'm looking for. If you were upgrading to 18s on a Highline Golf, you'd have to go with those over any of the 18s on the Irish configurator, especially at roughly the same price!

You can get the codes if you look up U.K., French or Slovakian spec sheets to name a few. If you then give VW Ireland those codes they’ll get you a price for it. I went through this with them for my build with plenty of debate.

What options are you specifically looking for the code for? I might be able to help.

I was looking for the Beats Audio code for the Polo, as I'm considering the GTI version of it.

I saw that last Saturday driving towards the city on the Navan Road. Looked lovely and stood out just the right amount in traffic.
