Seen this with my own eyes one time. Salesman asked me how long I reckoned the farmer had the tractor on demo. I said 3 days but apparently he had it 6 hours. I honestly can say I'd be ashamed to give it back in the condition it was in

Even when I have hired a digger etc. I'm shocked at the condition some of the machines are fired back in. I'll never forget reading this thread -

    An update on my hunting!

Traveled to Grass and Muck and had a small ramble around before the auld lad got tired walking and had to leave. Here's my thoughts on what I did see (remember, all these are rated ~120HP)
    1. Same: Wasn't impressed at all
    2. Deutz: cool looking machines, but didn't fancy them
    3. Case: Was on the Maxxum (120 I think). Seems very small and light for the HP, and a cramped cab. Layout inside was good though
    4. JD: Sat on a 6120M. They seem very solid and well built. Sat up and was immediately disappointed. It's 23 years newer than the JD I have, and it's 90% the same. Same gearbox (button press instead of lever), same spool handles, same seat (and passenger seat). Don't see what has changed really
    5. Fendt: Seen 312 and loved it! More below on the Fendt

Still going to go check out Masseys, Landinis, McCormick and New Holland. Maybe Kubuto too if there's a dealer around, and maybe Claas.

Now Fendt. So was talking to a dude from Fendt and he gave me info, and then spoke to the dealer who gave me more. Even went to their open day last Sunday to drive them. After 2 visits to the site (I left initially out of sheer frustration from one of the idiots working there), I eventually got a spin on the 312 Vario Profi around the field and moved a few bales. Loved it. For the work I do be at, it is perfect. Gave my name and number to the lads there as they were flat out that day and couldn't stay talking to everyone. Still no call though. I'm not impressed by that after 3 days. If yer gonna drop over 100k ya'd think they'd make the call. Anyway, it's the tractor I want, but won't go begging either.

On the JD though, their sales man is mad eager after a 10 minute chat in Gurteen. He's been out to look at mine, gave a trade in value and I know the cost to change now, down to the euro. Going for a test spin on Friday to see how it goes, but I'm already against it as it has the exact same things that annoy me on my own tractor. We'll see

I am contemplating it at the moment.
Here is the thinking. I have high value off farm employment. This leaves me paying 40% tax.
I have a tractor worth €22k to trade in. €75k minus €22k is €53k cost to me. Over 5 years the payments are circa €11k per year. Now write off the 40% tax. It now costs me €6600 per year. At the end of the cycle I have a 5 year old tractor with 2000ish hours. I will get another 15 years at least from her.
    BTW I farm 135 acres.

Edited to say I am contemplating it for 2019.

Would it be better hiring a contractor to do all your silage work, write it all off against the farm and free up time for yourself, makes no since being a busy fool paying tax

A 6120m with a standard gearbox isn’t a fair comparison against a fendt 312 profi. You’d want to be comparing a 6120r with an autopower gearbox. Mightn’t be a whole lot different in price then though!

100% true. It wasn't just the gearbox that got me. The JD, 23 years newer than what I have, is more or less the same as what I have. Ya'd be hard pushed to see where 23 years of technological and mechanical advancements are. Compared to the Fendt, it's a different world. And I love my tech and gadgets so obviously was swayed. Price difference wise, between the 312 and 6120M, it's a about €25k. And that's after a negotiation with the JD dealer vs. list price of the Fendt. So that gap would easily close.

Hi, where are you based? Did you try Whelans Garage kilrush/Ennis/Loughrea to deal on the Fendt.

Those boys are too far away. Atkins in Birr are my nearest dealer

Most of my silage is pit and and is done by contractor. I mow rake and draw about 200ish bales off paddocks here and there.

As a side note, anyone ever deal with Atkins? I'm trying to suss if not calling back sooner is standard for them

I might have been talking to him without getting his name at their demo day. The main lad I talked to was Trevor, who I think is the boss there

Have dealt with Atkins in cork a good few times for new parts and second hand machinery. A more professional and helpful outfit you will not find.

Good to hear. They have until tomorrow to get in touch or there could be a new JD in my yard come Saturday morning!

Have you tried Massey and NH? They always seem to have deals going from time to time and hard to beat them for resale value and spares not as expensive as the JD

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,021 ✭✭✭roosterman71

Yeah I'll check them out I guess alright. Deal done for the JD so if I like it, I could shake on it tomorrow after a bit of test

I reckon a massey 5712 would be up there with the best of them and would be worth considering.

Did you bother going to look at the NH and McCormicks?

Seen NH at Grass and Muck, but haven't driven one. Couple of neighbours have McCromicks, and I wasn't too impressed by them. But I will probably go take a look as there's a dealer <10 miles away

If you were that impressed by the fendt I’d say do in for a chat anyway. Or just a phone call even.

If you like the machine and were a bit disappointed in the Deere then no point cutting off your nose to spite your face

That's true. I don't want them getting a whiff of over eagerness from me by going in AGAIN to see them (4 times in a week!). Need to stay a bit blasé cos when it comes to dealing, they gotta know I'd walk away if I'm not happy. Like chasing a girl ya really fancy, don't shoot yer load too soon in the process :D

Don't forget you'll have to look at this machine for a while so get one that you really want and are comfortable with

I'd agree. Fendt don't have s great resale value for the price you pay the day you buy it. Fir the amount of work your doing I can't see why you would fork out fir a fendt.
I've a new 5712 here with the electronic joystick and it's an absolute dream. The cab suspension could be better though, if they had it on the 4 springs like the Claas it would be a completely different animal

It would be cheaper change the wife then these new tractors, costs about the same to trade up a few years in both from what I can see

if your close to birr I'd try a case, the dealer is very good, don't forget about back up when making your decision

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,021 ✭✭✭roosterman71

What is your dad interested in or are you the only driver?
Good luck with the decision, as said previously take your time and get the right machine for you both.
It would be mainly me, but he'd drive it too a bit pottering around here and there. Mainly just to lift something with the loader or get a load of gravel or let me get tea if we're rolling or raking or something handy like that. 99% of the time, it will be me on it

Backup is #2 on the list (#1 is something I don't mind having around for the next 20 years!). I'm lucky to have a good few of different brands all within 30 mins of home.

Has anyone looked at the Kubota M5111 with the loader. It seems to be coming in at about €60,000 (inc VAT) with 3 years 0% finance. It seems decent value as a compact tractor for feeding cattle and doing odd jobs particularly when I am VAT registered.

So to my mind the cost would be:

    €49,000
    Pay €13,000 up front
    12000 PA x3 or €1,000 per month

€6125 per annum in capital allowances.

It would be primarily a loader tractor stacking and feeding bales of silage. I already have a TS115 for the odd bit of heavier work, and it would be mostly replacing the Ford 550 digger.

The other option is just to put a loader on the TS115 I guess.
