By the time a situation has reached the point where a Garda has a decision to make about taking a shot things have already degraded far beyond the point of a perfect outcome.

Internet experts have some luxury, arses on seats giving it the big one about what they'd have done in that instant and what they'd do next.

We all know what ye will do next. Ye'll have another cuppa tea and post another load of pure sh1te about people doing jobs you're not fit for.

There is something about the way this case was reported initially that is bothering me. I heard about the missing woman on the radio news several times yesterday and heard this description repeatedly.

"5ft in height, of slight build with long black hair and brown eyes. When last seen she was wearing a dark coloured jacket, white t-shirt, grey leggings and runners."

As I was driving around south county Dublin and DL-R I listened and kept my eyes out, as while it was unlikely that I'd see her, you never know. But at no point was any mention made of her nationality/skin colour. Pretending to be racially colour blind seems like a particularly stupid move when asking people to be on the lookout for someone and giving an otherwise detailed description. I don't think it would have made a lot of difference in this particular case but it's something that needs to be rectified in future.

99% of media said she was Philipino............I even reckon if you delve into that report you will get that reference.

The Mitchell Brothers, Phil Collins and now this guy. There's something inherently evil with bald men.

Charge a gun, run from a knife

Old video but shows how someone with a knife can close 20 feet gap between you, before you can draw your gun and fire

I was just about to post this, all those saying they should have shot and wounded him should stop embarrassing yourselves and watch this video. It shows just how quickly an armed attacker with a knife can close ground and fatally wound someone.

If any of you had ever even shot a rifle or pistol, you'd have an idea of how hard hitting a target is when you have time and can focus. When Gardai discharge their firearms they do so in the knowledge that the target may be killed, it is a mechanism of last resort, theres no such thing as shooting to wound.

If you want to see what happens in the real world, there are plenty of dash cam videos on youtube from the US showing people being shot in the chest 2 or 3 times and still being able to return fire, or advance towards the police with knives.

A fresh appeal from gardan the search for Jastine Valdez - they're looking to speak to anyone who noticed suspicious activity around Puckscastle Lane and Kilternan lead mines

Really? I've only seen one media reference to her being Phillipino. None of the early RTE reports stated this. I've seen this before in missing person cases involving African/Asian people and they never mention race/nationality. "Black hair, dark eyes" etc.

It's a separate thread maybe, but I wonder is there some kind of logic behind it?
If they asked people to look out for a small Filipino woman with brown eyes and long black hair, they'd be inundated.
I wonder is there any science/data that suggests that not mentioning race is more effective?

(Again, may be a discussion for another thread)

Well both of these can't be correct. Pretty much a reason why the whole ''first'' thing is irresponsible.

Be great if we (the consumers of meedja) could convince them (the meedja) perhaps they should put more importance on being right rather than being first

Who is this no mark? And who exactly is raising “our boys”? Single mothers, predominantly female pre school teachers and primary school teachers as well as in crèches and child minders. ffs, it’s the lack of a male role model that some kids miss these days. And fcuk her for taking cheap shots at men off the back of this poor girl’s situation

And one of the causes of so many conspiracy theories. 'Well, now they are saying it's one shooter but initial reports from terrified onlookers suggested that there was more than one shooter. It's obviously a cover up...'

It wouldn't suprise me if some start expertly claiming the AGS shot her in the car last night and today is just a cover up. They aren't that far from reaching that level conspiracy.

There's a Philippino being interviewed on rte 1 right now.she's from there.

This is nonsense. He is holding a knife as opposed to a high powered firearm. The garda response was disproportionate.

    No it wasn't ,

If anything it was suicide by cop

Better than potentially having two innocent people murdered
