Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

2018 Joe McDonagh/Christy Ring/Nicky Rackard/Lory Meagher Cups

    Joe McDonagh Cup:

    Antrim
    Carlow
    Kerry
    Laois
    Meath
    Westmeath

It hasn't been a vintage year for the Kerry hurlers, and on paper, only Meath look weaker than them in this group. As for the title, Carlow have been most consistent over the last two years, so start favourites.

    Christy Ring Cup:

    Group 1:

    Kildare
    Mayo
    Roscommon
    Wicklow

    Group 2:

    Armagh
    Derry
    Down
    London

Hard to make a judgement here, but Kildare were competitive in 2A.

    Nicky Rackard Cup:

    Group 1:

    Longford
    Louth
    Monaghan
    Warwickshire

    Group 2:

    Donegal
    Leitrim
    Tyrone

Warwickshire have had notable successes at the lower levels, and may edge out Louth to add to their silverware.

    Lory Meagher Cup:

    Cavan
    Fermanagh
    Lancashire
    Sligo

Lancs had a 100% record in a similar 3A this spring, so could make it a double.

An early shock in the Joe McDonagh, as Westmeath claim the points in Portlaoise on a 2-21 to 1-21 scoreline. Antrim, predictably, hammer Meath 5-25 to 2-18.

Doesn't bode well that my pools are already a crock. :)

Well Done to Westmeath. a fine result for them.

Kerry were more competitive than even most in the county expected, but Carlow ultimately won by three, 0-21 to 0-18.

Looks like it's between Meath and Kerry for relagation

Westmeath with a shock win over Laois and Carlow and Antrim winning too. Laois could be under pressure if they lose another game

    Full round-up:

    Joe McDonagh Cup:

    Antrim 2-16 0-19 Carlow

    Christy Ring Cup:

    Group 1:

    Wicklow 1-20 2-11 Mayo
    Kildare 4-26 1-10 Roscommon

    Group 2:

    Derry 1-18 1-20 London
    Down 6-21 0-11 Armagh

    Nicky Rackard Cup:

    Group 1:

    Louth 1-16 3-19 Warwickshire
    Monaghan 4-19 2-9 Longford

    Group 2:

    Tyrone 1-12 1-26 Donegal

Antrim v Carlow sounded "lively" - one home player dismissed, and the Barrowsiders reduced to 12!

No Keith Higgins(footballers), no Sean Regan(injured) and Cathal Freeman only fit enough for the bench. Losing Zippy was bad enough but Mayo have a very small pick.

BBC have highlights up from Antrim. Nigel Elliott in super form and Carlow with 3 sent off. Antrim going well, chance of winning it?

I think there is some limit now but I imagine the English teams get around that. I seen the Monaghan manager complaining about it this week in the paper.

Not enough club sides playing in Fermanagh and Cavan, in fact barely any at all. Lancashire no doubt have some handy players over working/living there and were promoted in the league. Hurling really needs to be pushed more in weaker counties though. Not sure what can be done, although youth development seems to be picking up more now at least. Also it's worth mentioning Lancashire GAA isn't just the English county of Lancashire. It takes in all of Manchester and Liverpool so they have much more lads to pick from than it appears.

Full time people needed on the ground
    Get the game into schools
    Train up volunteers
    Organise competitions
    Develop new clubs
    Run county development squads

Surprisingly, Kerry had a 10-point win over Laois today, 3-20 to 0-19. Meath suffer a second hammering, Westmeath winning 4-24 to 2-17.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,806 ✭✭✭An Ciarraioch

Joe McDonagh table after two rounds:

    Antrim +19 4
    Westmeath +16 4
    Kerry +7 2
    Carlow 0 2
    Laois -13 0
    Meath -29 0

Of course, if H2H applies, put Carlow above Kerry, so some poster might clarify that point.

The Antrim red was questionable , no more than a yellow in my opinion. One of the Carlow reds harsh also but Coadys attack on McManus was savagery and deserves the book thrown at him.

I heard he needed stitches in his nether regions alright. Sometimes the injury is worse than the intent, sometimes not,but that sounds pretty bad. It's a shame.

No offence to Kerry, but what in the name of jebus is going on in Laois?

We thought they'd put us to pin of collar in last league game which was crucial for both teams, but it was over after 10 minutes,

Someone here mentioned my not referring to Laois as potential McDonagh winners.

    The prosecution rests my lord!

Mighty win yesterday, last time I saw our lads that fired up was against Laois two years ago in a league game in Tralee, won well that evening as well

Should have won by more yesterday, missed two great goal chances in the first half

Staying at this level is key for us,we have a lot of young players coming through that actually want to hurl for Kerry and are putting in a serious effort

Had to laugh yesterday the Sunday game panel, they were saying it was a pity that RTE didnt show the New York Leitrim game last week,

How about showing some action from the lower tier hurling competitions

    Cavan 2-16 1-19 Fermanagh

So, Kildare and Wicklow already guarantee their progress to the Christy Ring semis, as do Warwickshire in the Nicky Rackard if H2H applies.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,085 ✭✭✭✭BonnieSituation

    Draw here in Brewster.

Was a very enjoyable end to the game.
Fermanagh should've had it won though.

Bit of a hoodoo now with the senior hurlers and Cavan.

    Christy Ring Rd 2:

London v. Down postponed to 2.30p.m. tomorrow, Sunday.

    Nicky Rackard Rd 2:

    Donegal 2-28 Leitrim 2-8.

    That completes today's programme.

Hopefully we get the win over Westmeath today, would put us in a good position going into the Meath game

    Westmeath will be tough though

So the Clare lad that scored 4-12 out of 4-19 for Louth last year against Longford didn’t show so hence Longford’s win yesterday.

    Down 2-20 1-21 London

So Down are virtually in the Christy Ring semis, but not quite mathematically.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,806 ✭✭✭An Ciarraioch

    Westmeath 2-12 0-15 Kerry

Which leaves the table after Rd 3

    Westmeath 6
    Antrim 4
    Carlow 4
    Kerry 2
    Laois 2
    Meath 0

It's looking good for Westmeath now to make the McDonagh Cup final and the All-Ireland preliminary quarter finals, although in saying that they still have to play their nearest rivals Antrim and Carlow. Should be an exciting last two rounds.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,636 ✭✭✭feargale

    1. What's the story with Liam Watson (Antrim & Warwickshire)? Has he retired? He's 35.

    2. Any developments as regards the Arthur brothers of Clare, barred from playing with Louth?

    3. How does John Sheanon of Cuala play with Cavan? Does he reside or work there? What exactly is the rule? I believe a weak county can borrow three players, but what criteria must be fulfilled? Which weak counties qualify?

    Thanks.
