HS Rachael’s officially closed or what’s the story lads ?

I should hope not, as I only made a reservation there last week, and they told me they were very busy the weekend I wanted to book for :)

Has anyone eaten in the new Italian that's gone in where Star Anise used to be yet? Passed there today and the menu looks small but nice. It was closed when I passed so not sure is it only open evenings or if it's not actually opened yet.

Waiting for their wine license before they open in the evening, apparently. I'm going there shortly so will be back with a review!

I had the Ichigo Ichie experience last night, and it was amazing! Beautifully delicate, light courses, which paired fantastically with a glass of sake to start. Some unusual components, such as oxtail and gizzard, but all so carefully prepared and complemented with excellent flavours. I really enjoyed it and it's great to be able to eat 12 courses and come out not feeling like you've overimbibed. I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in trying a proper Japanese dining meal.

They're currently hiring staff and had a Facebook post up yesterday saying "Something exciting coming soon..." so if they have, it must have been quite the shocker!

    i would guess tables outside

    Yep, I would say so.

It was a picture of Little Cross Street which is between there and Reardens so it would make sense.

How does Montgomery get away with using a public street for his bar and restaurant?

Not unusual for outdoor seating to be fair. Europe is full of it. Wouldn't begrudge them, it adds to the city in my opinion.

He has to pay for it.

I get your point but the road is a public road isn't it? You're supposed to be able to drive on it, unless they changed that? Money does make things change so that's probably why!

There was a deal in place for a year or two there where it would be converted into a little park with benches, astro-turf etc. I remember watching the European Championships there. It was technically a public area, ie you wouldn't be turned away if you hadn't bought anything in Reardens.

I wonder is it connected to that? Obviously, the public access thing seems to have changed with the Rachel's seating but would the permissions be the same?

Also, is there not a small slip road still there allowing access from Hanover St to Washington St? Can't imagine it's the busiest route anyway plus its quite easy to extinguish road access, rights of way, etc. I believe it's a reserved function of the councillors so it would just take an application to City Hall which would then be assessed and voted on.

The most prominent business man in the city can close a public street for his own use. Hardly shocking.

The reardens group is a licence to print money. What he takes alone on the cloakrooms would make you green.

Without a doubt no wonder he got into property development.

had dinner in the Oyster Tavern yesterday - v impressed - lovely decor, great staff and food... we had to sit at a smaller table than planned as our original table had not been vacated.. so we got a bottle of prosecco on the house... twas a nice gesture.

From the 18th to 20th century, it was the Oyster Tavern, with some closures in there, then it became World's End in the 1990s, closed in the early 00s, reopened with the old name last year.

That’s incorrect! During the euros you had to access it through reardons doors. Also after one of the Irish games they locked the door from Reardons out to the beer garden and made people walk around to the front door. Then refused numerous people access to the bar due to “dress code” after being happy to take their money all day. We had friends come to the Woolshed, where we were, absolutely spitting fire at this! Imagine being refused for wearing an Irish Jersey on the day Ireland were playing and it wasn’t just one person they refused all the men who were out there that day

Most restaurants, bars can put tables chairs and wind blockers up outside, on footpaths and Lane ways, there's usually a very defined area they can use and the business pays city council through the nose, which is only right..

Was in Cafe Mexicana last night. I thought it was recommended here a while back, maybe not....

Anyway, it was pretty bad. Like cheap european holiday resort bad....
I had wings to start, OH had jalepeno "poppers". Asked for the wings extra hot, obviously this couldn't be accommodated as they came straight from a packet. The "poppers" were slices of jalepeno out of a jar coated in some sort of salty batter.

Mains fish tacos. Sauce was nice, fish didnt taste fresh tho. I'm not saying it was off, but it was out of a tin/blister pack. Again asked for extra hot, no spice there at all really...
OH had a vegetarian chimichanga. The veg was literally your standard frozen "country veg"!

The food served its purpose and filled a gap, but is miles away from being mexican! Service was nice. When we said we asked for extra hot but the food wasn't really spicy we were given a nice array of hot sauces.... I'm guessing there is actually no fresh chilis in the kitchen!

The few times I've eaten at Cafe Mexicana I had the enchilladas verde and liked them, but I didn't have any other item so I cannot comment on them. The staff were very friendly when I was there.
I make my own Mexican food ( I went to university in Texas, and worked in a Mexican restaurant as a student), and find that the Cafe Mexicana was OK.
The Mexican places in Dublin have no resemblance to Mexican restaurants in Texas or San Francisco.

As an afterthought, when I first went to Cafe Mexicana one the staff actually was from Mexico, but I haven't seen him there on the subsequent visits - I think I ate there about 4 times.

Following up to my previous post: I think Picado Mexican on South Richmond Street in Dublin - from whom I buy my ingredients online - do cooking classes, but unfortunately don't have a restaurant.

Sums up CM. Everything is pre-bought. I do like the nachos, but they are pre-bought chips. No fresh chillies, only chopped up jalapeños from a jar.

Their spinach soup is nice. Seems to be based on a beef broth.

I'm pleasantly surprised that you got offered hot sauces, I've never seen them. Funny that they were offered only after you complained about lack of chilli.
